If anybody has a suggestion for getting a little more grunt off the bottom....'m sure missing that smooth power delivery my Sherco had.
I know it's a mistake to compare the two, but...
Maybe a smaller throat carb.
-
I bet you talked the previous owner into pulling it off Ebay...I had a pretty high bid ready to roll with Esnipe, and the auction evaporated.
I have a low opinion of people who pull auctions, especially when they lie and say they decided to keep the item.
Oh, well.
1-Just because a plug sparks outside of the cylinder, doesn't mean it'll spark inside.
Install a fresh plug.
Also...a plug will look like it's firing well out of the cylinder if the condenser is shot.
Change the condenser.
Hang it off the coil instead of burying it behind the flywheel.
Condensers have a shelf life and they're getting old...it pays to make them easier to change.
Check your clutch adjustment.
The slightest bit of slip can go unnoticed while kicking, but it'll keep the motor from turning enough to start.
So...how much did you pay?
-
I do it right on the bike. The sprocket holds the chain very well for grinding and punching.
The rivet is a tight fit.
When you grind it flush to the plate, it'll disappear.
You have to estimate where it is for the first hit or 2 on the punch.

While we're on the subject....I need one.
I have the readily-available OMG one, but it took a dump after a couple years.
The seal went.
Probably old rubber meets new gas.
Anybody have a suggestion for a replacement?
-
I bought a plastic cutting board...very strong stuff.
Cut my guards out with a coping saw.
It was even blue!

I didn't mean to imply that the vent would make the puddle go away, but it might keep it from getting there in the first place.
That hot compartment will suck water if you submerge it and cool it quickly.
-
-
If you're tempted to drill a hole to vent the mag, you'd be better off heating a phillips screwdriver and running it through the rubber block where the wires go in, then stick a rubber hose in there and run it up under the tank. This will let some air in there to let things dry out. It'll also keep the case from building up a vacuum. High school physics told us that when that space gets hot and cools quickly (going through water), it's going to try real hard to suck water in past the gasket.

There's a nice looking one in my area...thinking about scoring it.
It has a TY250 front end.
Is that a common mod?
Sensible?
Better brake?
How would it compare to my 247?
I had one in about 1978....but it was a long time ago and it was the only trials bike I had ever ridden!
It
-
Is it possible that the grip on modern trials bikes is wildly superior to my 247?
I'm WAY out of practice, and was never too good to begin with....but this 247 has a brand new pair of Dunlops and I was slipping ALL OVER...in every situation...going across gentle hillsides the front tire was washing out...everything.
Was my Sherco really THAT much better?
-
What kind of tire pressures are y'all running in tube tires.
Anybody feel the need for more than one rim lock?
-
When I had a 290, I drilled the starter jet a bit (can't remember how much) and it started on 2 kicks no matter what.
Make sure you use no throttle when trying to start it.
Your flywheel key may have sheared and your flywheel has slipped.
Also check your clutch adjustment.

I've dealt with Forking by Frank here in the US since time out of mind.
Always a perfect fit.
Great company.
Hard chrome is a strange thing.
If you have your forks chromed, they may ask you how many thousandths of an inch you want, and it's expensive, as you noticed.
-
Oooohh...minty!
I saw a T-shirt awile ago that said:
It's an Italjet thing...EVEN I don't understand.
-
I suppose Mick is an OK rider
Thanks.
-
Can anybody recommend some links or DVDs or whatever where I can see some good twinshock trials?
Riding this 247 is a totally different animal...I can hardly even figure out how to ride it after getting off a Sherco.
I need some inspiration!
-
Bar-end signals on an off-road bike?
Those won't last long!
Cool looking bike, though.
-
Thanks, guys.
I'm using an Amal lever.
I may try some different cable. I've done this on old Harleys...something with a longitudinal core that stretches less.
I notice, though, that when I pull the lever, the arm on the backing plate does keep moving...just not too much more braking occurs.
I have a buddy who can arc the shoes and match them to the drum.
I'll give that a shot.
-
OK, Montesa guys.
My front end is a little cobbled together, but I just got this thing going for the first time in MANY years, and I'm psyched to ride.
Needless to say, the front brake will never be like the Sherco I sold last year, but what can I really expect from the front brake?
Right now it seems like a joke.
Won't lock at any speed except maybe on ice.
I've even got it adjusted so it drags a bit just so I can be sure all my cable/lever motion is doing something.
Any tricks to adjusting/tweaking these?
Should the backing plate float a little so it centers?
I think I see why folks put a compression release on these things!
-
I bet, if we talked to your mother, she'd tell us that you were never like the other children.
I love it, of course!
-
I was wearing gloves.
Does that help?
-
Ahhhh, yes, Andrew....Uncle Charlie's Tech tips....I had forgotten.
These days, I think I'd be more prone to give guitar and amplifier tips than motorcycle ones.
Right now, the best I could do would be to mention that the way to avoid wearing out your bike is to keep it in the shed.
Happy hols, mate.
I was thinking about you just the other day while using my youmee beader.
Did that seem weird....?
-
-
Yeah...I still ride 2 or 3 times a year.
The Sherco still starts on exactly 2 kicks even after sitting for months with old gas.
Anyway...Merry Christmas.
And...anybody out there near Elkins West Virginia?
I may be out there for a week this summer with free time on my hands.
Charlie's Album...and bid for World Musical Domination

Don't sweat it Cope.
I don't consider "I wouldn't drive from Texas to Pennsylvania to see you," a bad review!
And...that Eric Johnson cat can barely play...must be missing a finger or two.
If you want to hear some REAL gee-tar playing, you have to buy the Glenside Allstars album!
