  1. There is no arguing with cowboy logic. The Sierra Club and the US Forest

Service were presenting an alternative to Wyoming ranchers for controlling

the coyote population. It seems that after years of the ranchers using the

tried and true methods of shooting and/or trapping the predator, the

tree-huggers had a "more humane" solution. What they proposed was for the

animals to be captured alive, the male castrated and let loose again and the

population would be controlled. This was ACTUALLY proposed to the Wyoming

    Wool and

Sheep Grower's Association by the Sierra Club and the USFS. All of the

ranchers thought about this amazing idea for a couple of minutes.

Finally, an old boy in the in the back stood up, tipped his hat back and

said, "Son, I don't think you understand the problem. Those coyotes ain't

screwin' our sheep - they're eatin' 'em!

    cant argue with that! :P

  2. I am new to trials sorry!!!

This may sound stupid but how would i go about doing that?

    Thanks

    Henry

take off the radiator cap and look inside. I dont know aprilia's but on most bikes the level is about 10-15mm (bout arf an inch) from the top.

  3. I have a aprilia climber 280r. its got a few problems i am justs trying to sort out. One of them is the engine cooling system, under the fuel tank there is a little tank that i asume holds the anti freeze because it conects up to the line of the radiator at the front?

The problem i am having is that i keep filling the tank up with antifreeze and it keeps draing out and it doesnt apear to be leaking out the bottem????

can anyone tell me the problem i have or is it suposed to happen?

    Many Thanks

    Henry

Thats your expansion tank. When your engine heats up the coolant expands, that tank is there just to deal with the expansion. When the motor cools the expanded fluid in the tank is pulled back into the radiator.

When cool the tank will probably be about half full.

It will find its own level. If you overfill it and the engine gets hot it will expell some.

    Nothing to worry about.

  4. NO! You must remove the hose as there is no space for it! :(

You can also drill out the orface on the other side and run a short hose downward.

Im not sure if your serious or not????

Anyway I am not about to start driling my nice Keihin to re route a pipe.

Stainess steel braided hose seems the answer but not sure where to get it from in the size/length i want??

Stainless Braided brake pipe would do it as long as it wasnt too stiff. You can get larger diameter stuff like they use on cars or perhaps braided steel breather pipe from a 4X4.

  5. Not sure how much they would suited to trials though as i beleive you dont get as much torque from them.

    From Wikipedia:

Compared to piston engines, the time available for fuel to be injected into a ****el engine is significantly shorter, due to the way the three chambers rotate. The fuel-air mixture cannot be pre-stored as there is no intake valve. This means that to get good performance out of a ****el engine, more complicated fuel injection technologies are required than for regular four-stroke engines. This difference in intake times also causes ****el engines to be more susceptible to pressure loss at low RPM compared to regular piston engines.

    And your point is?

Why I think a w ankel engine would be suitable for trials is :-

[1] You can get a large amount of power from a small displacement. An RX8 has a 1300cc engine and pokes out 220BHP (if I remember correctly)

[2] The engine could be quite small

[3] They can also rev very high

[4] They have a considerable smooth power delivery.

I took an RX4 to bits once - amazing engines

It would require you to change your riding style i think, when you have an engine which might rev to 20,000rpm, but the weight advantage is certainly there.

  6. I would like to see a trials bike with a w ankel engine. I reckon they would be puuurrrrfect for trials.

Atoms new trials bike. A bit heavy but he can learn to unload more...

    --Biff

i havent ridden an RE5 but I have a mate who has a norton rotary (well several actually). Those engines are seriously good. I don't know of any that have been built small enough to fit in a tirals but theoretically there is no limit to how small they could be made. I imagine a 125 or 250 is quite possible and when you consider that they put out a remarkable power for displacement a 250 rotary would have about the same bhp as maybe a 400 so a 125 would work fine.

Not sure how much they would suited to trials though as i beleive you dont get as much torque from them.

I really struggled to get my head round how they work until i saw this a few years ago:

  7. Very good but..not sure which Canary Islands you're on about 'cos the ones I'm thinking of that are definitely named after 'dawgs' are located in the Atlantic??

Am I just splitting hairs?

Your probably right. I just copied it from an email i got. Thought it would be funny.

  8. From RYP;
The Scorpa T-Ride to debut at Endurocross! - Saturday, September 29 will mark the debut of Scorpa's newest model&The T-Ride. The Scorpa factory has sent over a late prototype of the much anticipated machine to be piloted by French enduro rider Greg Eyries at the first 2 rounds of the popular Endurocross series. In other RYP Endurocross news, Nick Mantzoras and Phil Smage will also be contesting the series this season aboard their Sherco trials machines. Any riders in the Denver area are welcome to come on out to support these riders as they represent the trials community. RYP will have a 2008 Sherco 2.9 on display and all are welcome to stop by the Scorpa or Sherco pits and meet with the riders. Round 2 of the series will take place on October 6 at the Lazy E arena in Guthrie, OK and RYP will be there as well. Check out www.endurocross.com for more details and ticketing information.

Hmmm. just been looking at the prize purse for the endurocross. According to the chart it says that if you finish 1st in all events the prizes are as follows: Denver first place $2,500, Oklahoma first place $2,500, Vegas 1st prize $10,000 and series bonus $5,000 which it totals to $21,000. Is my maths wobbly or is that $20,000 not $21,000

  9. I have some really bad neighbours and thought that if i could just find a trident missile on ebay i could blow them away for good, after ive gone away on holiday of course.

You're not North Korean are you? You wouldn't need the long range ones if you moved in eh?

No, I'm in Lancashire U.K. but my neighbours are a mad scientist (no really he is, he's a physicist and he's genuinly bonkers) and his bargain basement russian wife.

You get what you pay for, she is 60, very fat, like 30 stone, very ugly, cant cook, can't speak much english and physically pushes him around, she even knocked him to the floor once when he didnt agree with her. Dont get me started.

I paid nothing for mine

There's a joke there somewhere

I think this is probably one for the anything goes section - admin's do your stuff

Mmm. Thought i had put it in anything goes actually. Sorry. My mistake.

  12. hi all new to this forum i have a gasgas txt250 2000 model.......... EH well it's for the 15 year old son to play on OH and me

what i'am looking for is a cooling fan mine seams to have stoped working i have taken it of the bike today and run a twelve volt power supply to it and bu@@er all happening

Has it got to be one of a gasgas or do other ones fit??????????

    Or are they fixable???????

I had the same problem when i bought my 1997 250 scorpa. The bloke i rang said they were all the same and the one i fitted was suitable for gas gas and sherco.

I may be wrong, can anyone else confirm?

  13. Hi there, having recently acquired a 1989 JCM 240, I am in search of anyone who can supply spares for this bike, as i,m having a little difficulty, any info would be greatly appreciated...

There is a classified section accessible from the front page of the site.

  14. Running a castor based oil makes anyone who is behind you on the loop want to seek you out and kill you. It smells like sh^t and should only be run by serious A**holes who just like to screw with people. If you are a nice person I recommend using Motul 800 at 80:1 to 100:1 or some fully synthetic oil other than strawberry IPONE.

    Just my humble opinion.

    DFW

I love the smell of castor, reminds me of my yoof.

  15. I swear by silkolene comp-2 Synthetic. I run it in my CR500 motard (at about 35-1)and have done for about 7 years.

My mate runs the same oil, but in injector form, in his KH750's (he mixes a little in with his fuel too). He built a 750 that dyno'd at 103bhp at crank. he ran it for about 30k miles and then took the engine out and stored it for about 2 years. When he stripped it down not only could you still see the crosshatch on the bores but when i wiped my finger down the bore it was still coated with silkolene from when he last ran the motor.

I know there are newer oils out there but i think it will take a lot to make me change from it.

  16. copemech Posted Today, 12:29 AM

I like good things that are simple and work form a design and engineering standpoint! And for reliability and maintenance! What can you fix sitting on the side of the road? Easily? Anyone had a load of bad dirty fuel in a Mont? You are fu---!

I think that Copemech makes a very good point here.

The majority of trials riders are do-it-yourselfers when it comes to maintenance and repair. I am decently mechanically inclined and if I have access to proper spares on the day of the event I can repair just about anything that may break on event day and continue to ride. The way the bikes are made now are relatively easy to diagnose the problem, if getting into throttle by wire now there are sensors, contact points, and more wires. if you crash in the water and the throttle is submerged what will that do to the throttle by wire?

What I am trying to say is that the new technology is more difficult for the majority of riders to understand, the majority of riders are not 17-18 and totally interested in all things electronic. Majority I think are 25-50 and mechanically inclined.

Just my opinion, and usually nobody cares anyways

For me, I would rather have a reliable bike than one that's easy to repair. Both automobiles and motorcycles are far, far more complex and technologically advanced than they were 35 years ago...they are also incredibly more reliable. You may not be able to cobble together a roadside or trailside repair when something goes wrong, but that occurance is so rare, that I welcome the trade-off.

If I submerge my bike in water, I don't expect the throttle-by-wire to be any more/less reliable than my electronic ignition. Personally, I'm not itching to get back to the days of points, condensors, magnetos and fouled plugs than I am to get back to the days of pilot jets, main jets, slides, choke circuits, floats, check valves, vents, compared to gas and go in any conditions.

I have to agree with that but there is still something in me that cringes at the thought of oodles of computers all over any bike (expecially a trials bike)

    angryanim.gif

Just my opinion so its probably wrong.

  17. The monoshock was clearly huge, as was the advent of two-strokes in the '60s. Come to think of it, two-strokes really came to trials before motocross.

The two stroke development originally came from GP racing of course, courtesy of MZ for coming up with the expansion chamber, later stolen by suzuki, literally.

Its a pity that two stroke corporate development in motorcycles came to a stop in the 80's, Largely due to emmission laws. Imagine if the 2 stoke technology now in snowmobiles and jetski's came back to motorcycles. Not just trials bikes either. Imagine a 1000cc 2 stroke fuel injected in line four engine in a superbike. Lighter and more powerful than the present rake of jap superbikes. 250mph anyone?

I dont think we will ever see the kind of 2-stroke development that took place in the 60's return.
