  1. Hi folks, we've had a Canon A70 digi-cam for roughly 2 years and it has given superb service but its getting a bit tired now and we are after a new one with a better (more powerful) zoom lens and perhaps a few more megapixels. Our budget is up to

    Lancashire Ty Man

Thanks for the info and the quick reply, its for my mate who's just bought a Pinkie. He used to have a Montesa but it seemed to have an affinity for climbing trees! Eiger

    Lancashire Ty Man

I seem to remember a previous post with the telephone number of a chap called John Cane from Lancashire who was a TY specialist but I can't find it anywhere, can anyone enlighten me and does he have a website or has he packed up. Cheers Eiger.
  4. In the family we have two gg pros an 02 and an 04. We have experienced no problems with either. The 200 has plenty of power even with 13 stone on it , it will get up a steep hill climb in 4th gear. More forgiving than the 250 and more manouverable. Just ask "Factory" kev hipwell. Eiger

    Manchester 17

Thanks Mac, enjoyed riding round with you, and I don't remember giving you any help! Must admit I was pretty knackered at the end but what a belting trial, even got me thinking of upgrading the Yam to a more modern bike! Eiger.

    Manchester 17

Yes it was a cracking trial and all credit to team 'Manchester 17' who, despite some extreme weather conditions on the run-up to the event, made it perfect for the top lads as well as the clubman. The sections couldn't have been better and it was obvious a great deal of hard work had gone into this event. Just one point though, if your bike isn't registered and insured, don't compete in a trial which uses public roads. I'm not bothered if you fall off and hurt yourself but if you hit someone else or if they hit you on the road then the proverbial will hit the fan. The Police can and will stop a trial from taking place and I don't want my sport being affected by some a**wipe who either thinks it is clever or is just too tight to pay to make the bike legal enough to insure it. Eiger.
  8. look at the website for Gas Gas in the UK (www.gasgasuk.com) and then give them a call on 01298-766813. Although its a lot easier if you live in the UK. They will help you out with anything! And yes I do want a job with them!! Eiger.
  9. Ishy, its the 1986 SSDT, Phillippe Berlatier on an Aprilia 280 and the section is Cameron Hill. The water was even higher later in the day and it remained that way for most of the week! Eiger
  10. Okay we'll try again, sorry for the confusion!! If you know who this is (you are cheating if you look at the jacket!) then you get a point, you will get two points extra if you can name the section. And we all know that points make.......................er...............nowt! Eiger.
  11. Okay sorry, I realise a photograph would help, just thought we'd really test you!! Now where's my lad gone as I think I need some help!!!!! I'll be back shortly! Eiger

    Ajs/matchless

Thanks Big John, I'm sure my Dad has a copy of Don Morley's 'Classic British Trials Bikes' so I'll have a look. As for being busy over the winter months you can say that again as I'm also halfway through rebuilding an old BSA Bantam. My wife said, 'its either me or those bl**dy bikes'. I thought about it for a minute or two but then remembered that I could gladly listen to the sound of an old thumper all night long! And of course now she has gone there is much more room in the house for all the bikes and spares......................! Regards. Eiger.
  13. I would agree with Boofont, as a Yamaha TYZ enthusiast I believed they were very forgiving and gave smooth bottom-end power and the Scorpa engine is a derivative of the TYZ. Mind you I remember the little TY175 being one of the best bikes to ride in icy conditions, or the Majesty's, they would seem to find grip on the most polished icy surface. I think the favourite tyre for snowy/icy trials was the Pirelli MT43 which had a harder compound to 'bite' into the icy conditions better. However, these observations relate to your average rider where a bike's power can make a difference, as for a world class rider they seem to be able to do that with any modern bike. Eiger

    Ajs/matchless

Thanks for the replies folks, I have just received my membership pack through the post for the AJS/Matchless owners club along with an email from the lady who deals with dating certificates. For a fiver and rubbings of the engine and frame number I can obtain the dating certificate. As for the photo I'll have to enlist the technical help of my 14yr old son to upload it! Regards. Eiger.
  15. Just purchased yet another project off Ebay. It was described as an AJS/Matchless 350cc in trials trim for restoration. I my enthusiasm I can't wait for the reply from the owners club as I have applied for membership. So do any of you people have any information on the history of the bike and the availability of parts. There is no tank or seat, and no obvious sign of model number. The engine number starts with 14 CSR, the frame number is a five figure number starting with 13. There is also another number (casting number?) on the rear of the gearbox which is M1071. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. Eiger.

    200 Pro Clutch

Madmax, we had the same problem on our 200, we changed all of the 'o' rings but it didn't help with the clutch drag. Dabster is probably right, what happens to every pro clutch since the beginning is that the fibre plates absorb oil over time and increase in thickness. Gas Gas UK offer alternative thinner steel 'divider' plates in the clutch pack but you will need to measure your current clutch pack depth using a vernier caliper as per the Gas Gas USA website (link from Gas Gas UK) and order the relevant plates. An 02 pro clutch we measured had a clutch pack almost 3mm over tolerance. As far as bleeding goes, even reverse bleeding can leave air pockets in the system, if you have got most of the air out by reverse bleeding try locking the bleed nipple and slowly pumping the lever a few times. Then hold it against the bars and loosen the nipple allowing the pressurised fluid to escape, then retighten and repeat whilst keeping an eye on the fluid level in the master cylinder. It'll take a few minutes but I guarantee you will see the odd air bubble in the escaping fluid. Also make sure the master cylinder plunger is not adjusted too far into the cylinder, back it off so you get the piston to its correct resting place when the lever is fully out. Eiger.
  17. Marky boy, may be showing either my age here or being as 'thick as two short planks', but what is a yogurt pot (and don't say its a pot which contains yogurt/yoghurt!). Eiger.
  18. I totally agree that trials riders are amongst the most honourable and honest people you could wish to meet. That is, until you ride a trial where you have a fuel stop where you have left a drinks bottle attached to your fuel can at the halfway point! You know, when its baking hot and you are gagging for a drink and you arrive at the fuel stop frantically searching for your fuel can only to find the drink bottle you had attached to your fuel can is missing (duct tape blowing in the breeze!) Or the drinks bottle is present but the majority of the contents seem to have evaporated! I suppose thats why 'Camelbacks' and the like have took off in such a big way! Oh and you have to be wary of those who are not content with their own machines, I remember parking my bike once in the Cleveland National whilst I walked the section only to watch another rider through and thinking 'hmmm, he seems to have the same stickers and scratches on his bike as I have'! Sad thing was he cleaned the bl**dy section and when I (eventually) got my bike back I took a big five! Eiger.

    The Staff

Rode the Hipwell trial (John Hartle memorial) yesterday, a road trial around the Peak Forest area of Buxton, Derbyshire, not far from Gas Gas UK. Two laps of 25 superb sections in fantastic countryside (when you could see it through the mist) set out by brothers Andy and Kev Hipwell who both work at Gas Gas UK (and they both observed on the day!) The secretary was Jude Mellor also from Gas Gas who was the secretary for Manchester 17's 'Dead Easy' trial on Saturday afternoon as well. Other people were involved to various degrees and I apologise for not mentioning them by name. But for an importer to have such enthusiasts devoting much of their own time for our sport can only be a good thing not only for the future of trials but also for the Gas Gas marque. Top trial, top people. Eiger.

    Bsa Bantam

Now then Endo Kid you sound like my Missus, its exactly what she says every time I buy a bike! I know its going to cost a few quid but the idea is to take it steady and hopefully she'll lose track of what I'm spending on it! Thanks for that info Johnnyboxer I'll look into it. And as for you Overthehill, the wiring is totally shot, so with your previous experience you may be just the man I need! Cheers folks. Eiger.

    Bsa Bantam

Good evening folks. Just acquired a BSA Bantam for a bit of a project, I am told its 175cc and wondered if anyone had any information as I've no experience of these machines. The frame is a D7 and engine is a D143. The bike is complete although rusted and I am hoping to get new rims (originals beyond repair) and sort out the forks which are rusted solid. Any information on the bike and where to get spares such as rims, spokes, forks and any other information would be appreciated. Thanks. Eiger.

    Tyz

We are about to acquire a TYZ250, have had one before but rode it standard. I've heard about mods like lowering the footpegs and moving them back an inch can make the bike easier to ride (not that they are particularly hard in the first place) but wondered if their are any other worthwhile mods you trials enthusiasts may know of. Thanks. Eiger.

    Changes 01 To 04

Used to have an 01 Montesa which was a great bike although it suffered a bit from clutch drag and it tended to 'pink' a fair bit when warm. Although this didn't seem to affect the way it ran. And we are now considering getting an 04 model. Can any of you Montesa experts out there advise me on what changes there have been since the 01 bike? Thanks. Eiger.
