Sometimes I miss things I should have seen.
While I was sitting here thinking that there was no way in heck that any K&N was going to fit in the space that is available on a Sherco 50, I had a bit of a flash.
I believe, and will look next time I get a chance, that I remember seeing something that I think (there is a lot of hedging going on here I know) was a K&N little set of round disc filters that you drilled holes in the side of your airbox and popped in one of these little round baby K&N's into.
I am real hazy here, but I believe that they were only about an inch in diameter, but maybe there were bigger ones available???
Anyway, I guess my point would be that you might want to look at airbox vents or something similar in the K&N area rather than at air filters themselves.

You get what you pay for, but they operate without a lot of the rules and regulations that many other countries impose on their industries.
For some reason they fascinate me. I can buy a diesel, 25Hp 4 wd power steering tractor for less money then we spend on our mowers.......
Of course, an American Made Koyker Loader is almost half the price of the entire tractor.....
There are also a number of "dealers" out there going through and doing a thorough setup on them prior to delivery, and then providing service after the sale,,,, Kind of reminds me of Trials bikes.
But when we bought, I chose to spend 12K on a 2000 New Holland with Hydro and all the bells and whistles with about 1000 hrs, rather then spend about 10K on the Jinma. I can pretty much get any part for my NH in 24 to 48 hrs, when I spoke to some of the Jinma owners they told me about waiting 2 months to get their tractor back etc. When I spend that kind of money on a machine to make money with, I cannot afford for it to be broken that long.
Back to the Trials end though, I would doubt there is enough market for them to produce a Trials bike. I see them saturating the entry level play bike, 4 wheeler, and hunting / recreational 4 wheeler market. The numbers are just so much bigger, and it really takes the same amount of effort to produce either.
I think they will really start hitting their stride when they realize they should not badge the darn things with so many different names, and develop a good parts and service department to support them.... And with the world of the internet, it is soooooo much easier than when the Japanese were trying to develop thiers.

I also play with Tractors, and this discussion is constant.
What I tell people about, is go back and watch the movie "on Any Sunday" where they are talking about those poor upstart bikes from Yaaa Maaaa Haaaa. (I cannot get the tone, but you should get the idea) and how they doubt those bikes will ever really compete with the British bikes.
Mind you this is not a direct quote, more a sense that the Japanese stuff was Junk and not able to compete.
I think you will see much of the same progression in the Chinese made equipment.
And some of the Chinese stuff is really pretty nice.

Dean's is 2.5 turns out. I have never adjusted it, and I do not remember ever fouling a plug (8 months or so)
I run Maxxima K2 at 64 to 1 with mixed 93 octane and 110.
I am sure Rathmells knows better than I, but, I would run it where it runs well. Just be careful, kids sometimes do not realize when the bike is not right and will not tell you.
Something I do find on Dean's and it never happens on ours and I am not sure why. When we put down the choke, the lever hangs on the edge of the cast metal guides where it is supposed to drop in too. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but if you play with the choke lever and pull it a bit off too the side, it should hang open just a bit, maybe 1/4 open.
First couple times this happened it confused me as the bike was running "choked" and rich.
I may be way off base, but I would watch for that.
Dean told me on the way to the section that his bike was "not right", and you could hear it in the exhaust tone.

That was one that I never fully resolved to my satisfaction. Space is very limited there. I tried a couple of different air filter foams etc. and never did get it right in my opinion.
What I ended up with at the end, was meticulous cleaning of the element, and it is getting more dirt than you think, and keeping him out of water over the air cleaner.
My procedure was to dip the filter in parts cleaning solvent, soak and agitate, then blow dry it clean with compressed shop air and then lightly oil wipe excess and allow to dry with a aerosol foam filter oil.
I was spraying them out with aerosol carb cleaner. And happened to have a bucket of parts cleaner on the bench. After I thought I had it "clean" I dunked it in the parts cleaner solvent and was suprised at the stuff that came out.
I cleaned ours on a daily basis.
Probably not the answer you were looking for, but it is how we handled that issue on ours.

I spoke with Bruce in Falling Water and Brent was looking at the possibility of coming over and riding the National rounds but that nothing was finalized at this point. (but that information is 2 weeks old)
I am sure when a deal is final, the primaries in that will make it known.
It is exciting to me too see Bruce on the Sherco and he seemed to be getting along quite well with it.
It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Sam, or anyone really, when speaking with Unicycles.com the other day, they said that someone had bought a bunch of QU- AX Trials uncicycles to sell at Motorama.
That is what I am looking at for Dean, and I would like an "outside" opinion on one if possible.
So, has anyone seen these?

OK, we did the runs to get the Science project done.
100 LL AVgas was added at the request of some others.
87 Octane produced the most HP at 7.5
The Avgas, 100 LL was the lowest Hp at 6.78 I think it was.
The others were in between.
So,,, what do we learn, probably not much to be honest.
We did one run on each fuel, I would have felt a lot better, and more scientific if I could have done at least 2, preferably 3 runs with each. Unfortunately, I was supposed to be there at 10, we ended up there at 2, the Shop was jammed with customers, and for some reason the Dyno kept loosing communication with the computer. It just figures sometimes.
Also thinking about it, the most HP may not be the actual critical factor, and the Dyno run is not really representative of how we ride. We get it rolling in 4th gear, then do a tap to wide open and then shut off and read max hp. While that gives an accurate represantaion of that test, it is not really how we ride. Things like knocking, pinging etc. did not really come into play as they would actually out riding in the day. And while you could probably eliminate or minimize most of that with proper tuning, jetting, timing etc. you would very likely loose the HP gain.
Anyway, ask away. It was fun, man is that thing rough on tires, it is a little disconcerting running that thing, but nothing like when they had the Hayabusa on there!!!!!

Hi Sam, that sounds great, Dean is really digging the Unicycles and is pretty darn comfortable on them. I think part of it is that I cannot do them.
Not sure what all we are going to make it too this year. Seems that once again, I have stuck too many irons in the fire and I am currently trying to figure out which ones I really need to tend, and which I need to let burn up on the side. I know Dean would love it so we will plug it in on the schedule and see what else is there.

On a sidebar, looks like Christina may go spend a year in Deutshland after this summer.... Now there is world experience for you.

And PA, while it may be easier, I can tell you that when you sit down on that thing (I cannot ride a small one either) that it is purely terrifying. Thoughts of Vlad the impaler came to mind and I did not have the courage to let go......

Poorly worded on my part.
Here is Dean's latest toy, the 5' Giraffe that he has been asking for that we got him for Christmas. He is doing really well on it imo. I have not taken him through the unicycle standard tests to see what level he is at, but I believe he could pass many of the skills tests quite easily.
He is rapidly reaching the limits of his Sun 18" and I have been looking at the various 20" Trials Unicycles available. Fortunately there are many folks associated with Team RYP / Sherco USA that love the unicycles and between them there are several brands represented. WWW.unicycles.com has also recently come out with a nimbus Trials unicycle for $169 which seems like a very reasonable price for the quality in the picture but when I went back too look at it, they are currently out of stock.
The next model that they have in stock is $229 and it steadily climbs from there all the way up to about $1400 for the Kris Holmes with Magura brake that Dean wants (Andy, know any circus folks looking?)
Debating how much to spend, a good 20" is something he could ride the rest of his life. I bought the cheapest 18" knowing he would outgrow it soon, and like the electric guitar it could end up just sitting in the corner of the living room as a decoration. Wish to heck I had that $200 spent on the guitar to spend on the uni!
Craig, I heard Big Dean, Matt, and Cody where going up to the Motorama with Unicycles. How did that work out?
We ought to get everyone together at this years Youth Nationals for a little fun. Last year Ryan rode the bicycle Trials sections on his.
Anyway, I will get Dean a true Trials UNI, just trying to sort out how much quality to how much $ I should go for.

OOOOPPPPSSS I messed up my pole and do not see how to edit it, Andy, can you fix it? It should be 75% of the 93 Octane to 25% 110 Octane race gas.
My daughter wanted to do her science fair project on something to do with the bikes this year. We hashed around several things, she had pretty much settled on weights of the various bikes, but then we got speaking about gas and how I mixed it etc. so the Science project evolved.
You see the question.
The procedure will be to take the Pizza bike of John Isherwood fame. (never rebuilt to my knowledge) Ish? (02 Sherco 125)
Take the 4 samples of fuel all mixed at 64 to 1 with Maxxima K2.
Bring bike up to operational temp as evidenced by the operation of the cooling fan.
Do a straight forward Dyno run for tourqe and HP and print the graph.
Drop tank and drain, ride bike around with fuel line disconnected to drain carb, refill with next sample of fuel, run to operating temp again and redyno.
Probably run double runs to look for consistency in measuring while a particular fuel is there.
So,,,,,, What do you guys think the answer will be?

25% race (110 I think it is) to 75% Amoco white (93)
64 to 1 Maxxima K2 full synthetic (64 to 1 works out on my Ratio rite)
See my pole / daughters school project posted above. Thought about doing it with oil ratio's and jetting etc. but by just varying octane, it should make it a pretty fair comparison without jetting changes.

I believe that the peices that AMiller are referring too are often called Twinserts or KeenSerts. Available at good nut and bolt houses. Have the advantage of using standard threads inside and out so no special taps etc to buy.
Hmmm, KeenSert is a brand as well, and do make the inserts that I would call HeliCoils (another brand) but they also make the ones I was referring too. Here is a link that should have a picture if you click on it.

The downside is that they are larger than a corresponding helicoil and in some applications that can be problematic.
