Thanks for the help ...
BTW - I found that the swing arm bushes on my bike left a little gap either side of the bearing,(because they touch in the middle)so I have made 4 plastic washers out of an old plastic milk bottle.
I placed these between the bushes and bearings ,with liberal amounts of grease, and then fitted the swing arm.(bit tight going back on)
it has filled the gap up perfectly to stop any water and crud getting in ,and is still free enough for the swing arm to move up and down easily.
Dont know how long they will last or whether its supposed to slide side to side .but the seals on the bearings didnt look adequate to me.

I had "slight" play, up and down ,(none noticeable side to side)on my swinging arm and it looked like the swinging arm bearings had worn on my 98 Techno
I stripped all the swinging arm and linkage down ,cleaned the bearings and bushes. They looked a little worn (not excesively though) especially the bushes.
Do I really need to get new bearings and bushes for the small amount of play that there is.
Or is it false economy ,and going to cause more problems somewhere else like chain/sprocket wear(which I`ve just had new)

My Techno has countersunk head bash plate screws at the rear.
When i took the plate off ,I had a bit of a time getting it all back together.
The screws at the back seemed to cross thread themslves on the way out .So,I had to put slightly longer screws back in and put a nut on the end
To get the plate back on I just bent the it a little so I could put all the screws in very loosely ,then tightened them up a bit at a time one by one....seemed to work for me ,and my bash plate has took some knocking about.
A jack comes in handy aswell

Try taking your fan off and checking it over.
It could be dirty ,clean it up and spray with WD40 or similar and spin the blades around a bit,so that the WD40 gets around the bearings.
Dont know what bike you have, but I would not advise you to ride to long without a fan .
My fan doesnt kick in automatically on my Techno,so from cold,I give it a couple of minutes then give it a flick ,which gets it going.I do this every time I start it after that.
In your case it could be something simple electrically ,or you may need a new fan if the cleaning and spraying doesnt work
you`ll just have to check all the connections

After reading another post on this forum ,I checked my chain alignment and chain tensioner
My sprockets dont line up with each other .
My back sprocket is about 1" off from the front ,and my tensioner was set for the back sprocket only,so the chain was angled off the front sprocket... to the tensioner....then straight to the back sprocket
Surely this would cause premature wear on chain and front sprocket
I take it the tensioner should be on line with a straight edge from the back sprocket to the front sprocket. But even if it was ,the sprockets are not parallel with each other
The front sprocket is straight ...the back sprocket is straight....but they are just out of line with each other
Do the sprockets have to be inline with each other...if so...how do I do it ?

I`ve watched Andys film clip a few times now....great bit of work Andy
I went to an open night of my local bike shop the other night...its 90% motocross 10% trials.
I think it was to promote the new website they have, gorgeous blonde girl taking everyones name and Email address.
Tom Sagar was there giving a trials demo on some skips and cable drums outside.
They had Motocross videos inside projected across on to a large wall for atmosphere...very effective.
Wonder what people would have thought about seeing Andys montage plastered over a large wall...with full sound system ....I think it would would have been even better ....

I`m a novice ..but, when my wheel is trued up to the frame and swing arm,my sprocket is out of line with the front sprocket. So it is causing more wear on the chain and sprockets,I thought that was why the front sprocket has a bit of play in it,to help a little.Didnt think you could line the wheels "and" sprockets up
or have I got it all wrong

What I did on My bike was ,when the engine is in tick over...join the 2 wires up that attach to the thermostat ...this cuts the thermostat out of the equasion .If the fan runs then its the stat thats the problem.if not ...give the fan a flick to see if at starts to move .It could need a little lube on the fan bearings ...try some WD40
It helped mine anyway

I have checked the manual over and over ,but it doesnt give a figure for specified distance from the top of the fork...just the 360cc volume.
Anybody out there now what the distance is ?
Forks feel better ...but I think I need to check if there is any air in them.
I have been meddling with the 2 adjusters at the top of each fork leg,I think I know what the one on the compression side does (L/H fork) it compresses the spring to give stiffer suspension..but cant see what the adjuster on the R/H side does.
While I was at it ,I changed the wheel bearings front and back ,fitted a new chain and changed the gear oil while the bike was stood on my new workstand (see other topic) ....funny thing is ...the little check window isnt showing as much oil in it as there was in before ( its just about shownig that there is some)after me putting the (manual) specified amount of oil in (500cc).I might as well throw this manual in the bloody bin for what good it is
Anyone out there know how much I should put in ?
I`m still on a very large learning curve ,so ,any help is greatly appreciated

Do you only go round left hand corners on the ice then ?
noticed you only done the outside on the L/H side

I contacted Lampkins a while ago about the mix for my Techno...he said 70:1 mix "semi" synthetic .
according to him you should only use semi in Beta`s
I had a large bottle of fully synthetic (Ipone) so will use all that up before trying semi

I`ve just finished changing my fork oil and put everything back together.
The instructions in the photo copy manual I have are very basic.
I had trouble screwing the screw back in at the bottom of the l/h leg(it wouldnt catch in the threads) I had to take the fork out of the clamps to sort it out.
Anyway ...its all back together now,but I`m a bit stuck about how to get the air out of the forks.
It says in the manual to ...compress the forks a few times ...then let the air out by undoing the nuts at the top.
Does this mean that I have to get "all" the air out of both forks by pushing down on them and tightening the nuts up at the top before releasing them again.
It could be because its a bit late and I`m tired so things seem a lot harder to understand and the manual is straight forward ,but I`m just not getting it.
It basically says to undo top nut....undo bottom nut....drain oil...tighten bottom nut ...fill with 360cc`s of oil ...tighten top nut...pump forks as there will be no load on them...then release top nut to release air.
I have done all the above but the forks are as stiff as hell
any help greatly appreciated

I find them expensive aswell
the motoX gear I got(accidently) from the internet site was

I`ve just put new bearings on the front wheel and going to start changing the fork oil . While stripping my front end down ,I noticed that the r/h side bracket that holds the front fender onto the forks has snapped ,right where it clamps up with the bolt.
How do I get a new one on ,....the old one will just snap off,but cant see the new one opening up wide enough without snapping.
It looks like I have to strip the forks down just to change it,and if thats the case it doesnt seem worth the effort to do it
Unless stripping the forks down is a lot easier than it looks
The bike is a 98 Techno

thanks Ron....but what will using 2.5 wt oil do to my suspension. Will it make much difference?

was going to buy a "O" ring chain yesterday but found that it wont fit my bike (not enough gap by the rear brake lever). So bought an "Iris" trial pro chain (coloured gold)
Is there anything I should do to it before fitting or should I just put it on and away to go.

just got back from my local bike shop. They recommended 2.5 wt fork oil both sides ,so have bought some.
I`m going to try the 2.5 wt oil in both forks...if it works ok I will stick with it ...if not then I will try Billy Ts idea ....
Billy ......BTW how do you tell which is compression and which is rebound side of the forks.

when I 1st got my bike ,the spokes were rusty
I cleaned the screws with a small wire brush and polished the spokes themselves with some chrome polish, which I had lying around (came in a tube). It took a lot of elbow grease to polish up every spoke but the end result was superb
they will stay fine as long as you dry them off after every wash...not like I did last time

for the 2nd time today you`ve been very helpful Ron
My bike is a 98 Techno....it seems (so I`ve found out recentlyfrom a friend) that its been like that from when I got it.
I`ll check the bleed screw 1st....then change the fork oil on the front
but I will make do with the back for now
