Thanks JC2.
So if I use the TY250 rear wheel and hub on the 175 I'll need to use the sprocket from the 175?
-
Hi Alan
Link didn't show?
Can you try again I'd like to have a look.
Thanks

Thanks for all the information.
It's looking very do-able.
Will doing all this turn my 5's into cleans? I suspect not?

Hi TY Gurus
I have a TY175 circa 1976 - mines great except knackered wheels (spokes missing, rims pitted, hubs look corroded, remaining spokes rusty).
I have just acquired a TY250 also circa 1976. It's wheels are in brilliant condition - clean, straight and very recent new spokes
Can I straight swap them so the good wheels are on the TY175? I cannot see any difference but thought I'd ask first? Even the hubs look identical?
I'll probably swap the forks/yokes as well - I've read on here that the 250 forks are more suited to heavier riders (I'm over 100kg) - any advice appreciated.
Are the rear shocks a straight swap as well? Anyone know standard length for TY175 and TY250?
Thanks in advance for your help, advice, criticism (from the 250 fans I expect) etc.

Looking for info on this bike - could not find much on-line (just basic specs).
I'm keen to know if the engine is a Cagiva design/manufacture or if it was supplied by Honda (or another manufacturer) and if so what is the engine also used in (eg XR500)?
Any common problems for this bike?
Where could I get spares from?
All info greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Lots of money is the difference.
-
I've been running my TY175 at 50:1 on Castrol TTS for 3 years with no problems.
-
Thanks for the replies.
The atf is cheap enough so I'll give it go and if that doesn't work then it's pull it apart time.
-
I want to try atf fluid in my TY175 gearbox because my clutch doesn't work when the bike is cold and I've read that atf may help (I don't want to pull bike apart if I can avoid it).
So I went to my local autostore (Supercheap Auto - in NZ) and they have different grades/types - some called type 'D' or 'F' (forgot the brand) and Castrol has several versions.
Which do I use or are they all ok?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've got the chance to buy some TLR200 wheels for very little cash.
The wheels on my TY175 need rebuilding as they're missing several spokes and the rims are dented and rough.
I reckon the gold TLR200 rims would look great on the TY.
Has anyone laced TY175 hubs into TLR200 rims?
If you happen to be a wheel building expert I'd be interested in your opinion. Is this straightforward?
Cheers

Air cooled monoclass at our classic trials and maybe the ocaisional modern trial.
-
Thanks for the information.
Do you know if they're any good?
-
Advertised for sale near me is a Beta Alp 240.
Air cooled, mono with discs f & r.
The advert says 1984 but I suspect it's later?
I don't know much about these Betas and wonder how they compare to monoshock bikes of similar vintage (Fantic 305, TY mono etc)?
Do they have any weaknesses?
Where can you get spares from?

Thanks in advance for any info supplied.

I like the look of the 175 - there is a 200 as well. TTR based engine - less servicing and longer life than high performance 4 strokes.
I wonder what the classic chaps would make of one of these turning up for their "air cooled mono" class?
-
Hi Peter
I'm in Canterbury.
There's a Montesa 310 for sale (Trademe) on the West Coast and I was wondering wether to drive over and have a look. It's $2200 which I reckon is pricey.
I had a TLM200 and it went OK - but drum brakes.
There is a TY350 for sale with a disc front end fitted - but it's Auckland so the freight kills it for me.
I'll keep looking.
Thanks for your input.
-
Thanks for your reply.
I read somewhere in the Honda forum that the TLM260 has issues - relating to carb overheating?
I haven't seen a Pinky (i'm in NZ) - do they have discs F & R?
-
I'm thinking of going the aircooled mono route.
I'd like - 2 stroke, disc brakes at both ends, electronic ignition, not too exotic so that spares are available.
Which is best?
I've seen a Montesa 310 and a Fantic 305 for sale but don't know anything about either of them. Any info appreciated?
I've also seen a Honda TLM220R - this only has disc on front - do later ones have F & R discs.
My thinking is that I can ride the air cooled mono class at the "classic trials" and have a go at "modern trials" on the same bike.
Any info/advice greatly accepted.

Another vote for TTS. Used in my TY175 (and other bikes) at 50:1 for 3 years with no problems.
-
Sammy Miller tail pipe, boyesen reeds, uniflow air filter and 27.5 pilot jet made a big difference to my TY175. More grunt especially off the bottom end - usefull if you have to climb straight after a tight turn. I am about 105kg (230+ lbs) and it pulls me around ok.
I got the bits secondhand so not too expensive.
High rise bars on mine and I like them, otherwise I'm bent double and the back is not as strong as it used to be.
I have concentrated on performance rather than looks so I would'nt go the SM tank and seat unit route - I did get just the SM seat cheap secondhand so that went on.
Suggest you look through this Yamaha forum as there's loads of stuff in here - AndyT recommendations have been spot on for me but I think a boost bottle is just that bit too radical.
You should also look at the TY Trials website they know their stuff and have provided me great service.
Enjoy your riding.

Hi All.
Were these any good?
Any known problems?
Are parts available (and where)?
I'm looking at a well used one with a loud engine rattle - sounds like it's top end. Probably needs piston, rings and gudgeon.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
-
I've run mine on Castrol TTS at 50:1 for a few years now with no problems so far.
-
So another vote for the TY Trials kit. I might have to ring John for pricing.
My TY starts first pop whenever and has never missed a beat so I'm not thinking of changing due to electrical problems. It's more of a "will it complement the other mods"? kinda thing.
More bottom end grunt to haul me around is what I'm after.
I think the only thing holding me back now is justifying the expense.
-
Hi Andy
Thanks for your reply.
If I go for it, based on info I have at present, it will probably be the TY Trials kit as I've bought stuff from them before. Great service and great products - maybe this free plug will earn me a discount?
I don't like the idea of mucking around with the carb set up so the 200 kit will probably be ruled out. I'll probably just freshen up the 175.
Cheers

Hi All
I have fitted Boyesen reeds, Sammy Miller tail pipe, 27.5 pilot jet and high flow air filter to my TY175. Thanks to some great advice on this forum (especially from Andy.T) it is running great and the improvement over standard is big.
I am considering an electronic ignition kit and would like to hear from anyone that has fitted one to their TY175.
Where did you get it (TY Trials, JK hirst, other)? What cost? What difference has it made?
I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the expense for me as it'll cost (with shipping to NZ) about half what I paid for the bike.
There has been some discussion of more cost effective ways of doing it, i.e. not a complete kit, has any one done this? What are the pitfalls?
Similar questions about 200cc kits?
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Got all the bits on yesterday - Miller tail pipe, Boyesen reeds, high flow airfilter and bigger pilot jet as suggested by Andy.T. No carb adjustment needed and bike went through it's first trial today with no problems. It's now a lot crisper and more grunt from next to no revs.
Thanks for your help.
