I'm stuck in the 1970s with my welding. Oxy-acetylene and stick. I tell people that the welding technology fits perfectly with the age of the rider and the age of the bike.
Oxy-acetylene is great for repairing exhausts and encouraging things to bend ........
Looks great! Are you guys using a Tig welder? I only have a Mig welder and was told the chrome moly frames needed to be tig or bronze welded. Mig welding transfers too much heat.
Clean the carb before looking else where. If your not sure how, check the make and go onto YouTube, lots of good info there. Take your time when stripping the carb and take pictures if your not sure.
Were could I purchase new yokes like you describe?.
Look for Gerry Minshall, he and his wife are heavily involved in the Kia classic trials series so Google him through that. Gerry is a really good guy, and manufacturers many parts for twin shock and pre 65.
Hmm... I can see that being true but as a reasonable novice that has a huge amount to learn, I will now have to dedicate considerable time to learning hopping in order to compete at clubman level. I think the problem with stop allowed is that every single section becomes a string of "hop, hop ,hop, braaaap" and repeat.
I've been watching a load of the older videos and as a beginner and spectator, the current rules at world level are the best overall in my opinion.
Get yourself a pre65 / twin shock, join a no stop club, have fun.
The club I am in has simply rules for twin shock.Cable operated drum brakes,twin shock(or hard tail)aircooled motor. My bike is not legal for AMA vintage meets because of twin brakes and laid down shock.I just built it for fun and using it in a few meets in our club.Most are 2 day events so I do vintage one day and modern with my GG the other.There are only 6 of us doing twin shock unfortunately but a fun group to ride with.The intermediate lines we must ride are allowed 3ft verticals and can be harsh on these old bikes.Some of the big cliff meets I will not ride this old girl.Cool bike and don't want to wreck it.The pick is a excellent rider on a ty175. He is a expert rider and the top 2 riders in twin shock always smoke the intermediate modern scores.Unreal how these guys can make these old girls dance.

I was having some teething problems but now she’s running very well and just great fun to ride. Only thing at the moment is that after around 10 minutes of riding it smokes and burns the crud in the silencer exhaust, and it gets ridiculously hot, and also noticed some embers flying out. So turned it off and let it cool down and the smoke subsided. I guess it needs a good clean out. I hear caustic soda is good to get rid of the built up carbon in
Your exhaust shouldn't get that hot so quickly, the fact if does suggests the carburation is very lean, or timing is way out, or a combination. What does the plug look like ?
I'm confused??? why would you mark a 5 on each section before you ride them? Trials, much like golf rely s on a certain amount of honesty from the competitor.
I ride trials for the challenge of man and machine over terrain. Personally I like to have a sense of achievement when conquering a section and a humility when I fail. If a person claims a better score than they actually achieved then they are only really cheating themselves, and will most likely get found out eventually anyhow. I would like to believe most folk would rather be proud of real achievement over falsely winning a tin pot for the mantle piece.
Agreed, it also quickly becomes obvious when people do "well" in self observed trials, but nowhere near as good when an independent observer is marking.
like everything the rules and laws are just a weapon for the weak to beat others with,...anytime you have a group of humans competing this kind of crap happens.this is why I'd never ride any club event ever,.it brings out what is bad in people and highlights the selfishness and ignorance that lives within them..one by one these are great people to ride and hang with...in a group they become insufferable due to the bickering and self importance.trials is so scattered as a sport...seems it can't ever seem to make up its mind or unite its members.
Not my experience over many years, the odd tw#t of course, but generally a really good bunch of people. Competition generally improves your standard or riding.
Too much play in the main bearings will cause the seals to leak. But while he is taking it apart I would make sure the seal is new and properly seated.
But he's just paid 200 to have them replaced, surely a half decent mechanic would have checked for excessive lift on the crankshaft and advised him accordingly ?
A build up of crap in the exhaust is possibly/hopefully the problem.

What condition is your front tyre ? What make is it, 5psi in a decent quality tyre should be about right.
