I did say in my first post that when I tried it the next day it had compression and I tentatively tried to start it but it didn't quite catch. I'll try properly on Monday and report back unless you think I shouldn't ???

What's the worst that can happen ?

  2. Burning oil does have a different smell, and tends to hang in the air longer. Check the gear oil when its had time to settle, mark the sight glass if its easier. You should then have a better idea of whats going on.

A decent hot air paint stipper will clean out an exhaust, be prepared for a lot of smoke, even if the seal hasnt failed.

Thought as much but good to hear from someone with more experience. I won't do it again. Will it have caused lasting damage ?

Back in the 70 / 80 's it was normal practice to run with the choke on when on the road for any distance.

  4. Rings will not make your bike smoke. Do you have anyone close by that could have a look at the bike before you start tearing into it ? It  would be as simple as a build up of oil in the exhaust, and it takes a couple of laps before there is enough heat to burn the oil.

They may survive, but they haven't won.

Apparently Toni Bou won't ride the ssdt because the fuel supplied is of the wrong octane rating .....

People go round in circles modding old bikes and can't remember if they were better or worse than before..............but justify it to themselves, saying it must be......... because the mod cost them £500

Hardly think spending £500 on a 40 year old trials bike is extravagant ? Or to put it in context, 3 months depreciation on a new bike.

Breagh and I swapped bikes and rode a lap, standard Bultaco against "modded" swm, I'm still in therapy.

(Breagh and I are slightly different dimensions)

Sorry guys but this feels like chatboard overeaction. How many of these posters have a gasser? There are a few topics on here already about the rattle.  - When I got my first gasser I too was worried but read up on it.I ran that gasser twice a week for three years with no issues apart from chewing up a bart simpson .Bought a new one six months back and this is just the same. So does most of the noise go away when the clutch is pulled in, I bet it does. Hold a rag over the exhaust for a few seconds, any nasty noises, probably not. Black sludge on the magnetic sump plug is from clutch and bedding in. Larger bits would be from Bart Simpson. Find someone else with a newish gasser and listen to theirs, it'll probably be the same. Total cost so far £0. Let us know how you get on

Why would the supplier send replacement parts if there wasn't a known problem ?

It was one of the first things I got told when I went practicing on my Beamish Suzuki.

oh you need to change the top yoke for the old Suzuki type and you need to move the pegs.

so far I have entered 3 trials and won my class in 2 with the bikes stock setup.

so yes are these mods really needed after all lol

    I'll bet your 5'8"

Anyway we will have to agree to differ on this as you are talking about a different level of riding than I am and any person reading this thread can make their own mind up about what set up is best for them; taking into account  how the bike is used.

To finish I can say from experience that after fitting 2cm high bar risers with 4 1/2" bars that my bikes reactions have not noticeably changed but I can definitely notice that the riding comfort has.

Not only do I raise the bar's, and rotate them forward, I also move the foot rests down and back.  80's Italian (and Spanish) twin shock bikes seem to be designed around riders well less that 6' tall, I would argue that all I'm doing is scaling up the position.  Having recently ridden a very nice bultaco in a two day trial, I can say the standard position didn't change my performance.
