Hi, I've recently purchased a Sherco st 300. Bike went fine first couple rides out on it but then started smoking badly. It was a grey kind of smoke and smelt really bad so I suspected it was burning gear oil. The crank oil seals have been replaced and I've also replaced the head o rings and water pump. The smoke has mostly cleared after a good run out but there's still a puff and the bike feels underpowered. The carbs been cleaned out well and I've adjusted the air screw to suit. For a 300 it feels gutless compared to other makes I've had. I've done a compression test and it's 160psi. The gearing in the bike is still standard with the 44t rear sprocket. Do people keep this standard for clubman trials? Below is a picture of the spark plug after a few hours out it's maybe on the lean side?any help much appreciated
I'd be concerned if my plug was like that, is your air filter well oiled ?
I'm no expert but have a look at this film it may help you. If your hand is blipping the throttle as you land it will cause the bike to jerk and as it pulls away you will be gripping the throttle tighter and twisting it by accident.
Try adjusting more slack in the throttle cable until you feel comfortable. That way nothing happens from a small blip. Once you are confident adjust the slack back out as it will be a hinderance for other obstacles.
You often see some Bultacos at English Trials, especially Classic Trials, but the old (real) Montesas are rare. Wonder why?
Leven Valley 2 Day was won by Steve Robson on a Montesa and a very original one was being ridden very well by Craig Turpie this year. You might be surprised how good they are 😎
All very good but ! did the club have to alter the sections /classes and scrutineering ( as your wanting ) or did the club just run the trial as normal and the rider and said bike just got on with it ? But your wanting the same small team that takes entrys , find sections, do the flags, finds observers , tidy up & do the results & now your wanting them to take on a nut and bolt scrutineering to check if a bike is all original ? just so your happy when you ride your 2 trials a year !
Think your being a bit unfair, the way I'm reading this and the original post from 2017, is ttspud will be scrutininneering the bikes ?
@b40rt. Routes and classes are "at the club's discretion". If you want me to add some more 2 stroke classes to the 'example' classes, which 2 stroke ones would you like added?
Why wouldn't you have similar ones ? Sprung 2t. Rigid 2t. Up to 200cc. Over 200cc. Gentleman 2t.
If you like fixing bikes, hunting auto jumbles for parts and machining up components you cannot buy any more than by all means get into older stuff. My dad was a mechanic and would have enjoyed all that stuff. I know people that do. If you want to ride, buy a new bike.
Not 100% accurate, unless you buy something really obscure, parts are easily found. Many of the twin shocks are as reliable, possibility moreso, than some modern bikes.
Look through the current topics, virtually all modern "reliable " bikes 😎
Hi, I am looking for a set of clamps to install the Rockshox boxer forks onto my sons 80, I would pay for a drawing also so I can get a set machined on a CNC mill. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers
Ossy Byres has a machine shop and manufacturers parts for pre65/twin shocks. Might be worth contacting Audit CNC.

A 247 rear will probably be wm3. 4.0 x18 can be either 2 or 3.
