Its a sad day for my Sherco....... Finally got around to taking the engine in today after long debating wether to do it myself. The piston is worn, the bore needs re plating, the con rod needs replacing, etc etc.... Was not expecting quite a long list now I am back to square one with what to do. Has anyone any ideas on the prices of these as I know the re plating is limited to two companys in the uk. I do not want to throw too much money at it as after all it is 8 years old. Is this common ware and tear? oh I am so sad I just wanna get the thing going so I can go enjoy the weather....... Help please.......

Ham2 but you got there in the end lol How does your bike run with transmission oil in the rad..... Where would I find the torque settings for the bolts if this is a crucial part ?

Yeah I will have a good look at them and do what is needed. There is a place called behind bars they are not to far from me I have spoken to them and they seem pretty cool Goining to drop it in on sat.....cheers again guys. Just one thing though. What are the most common things that you find once the engine is stripped are there generally other things that need replacing or is it usually okay???

Okay guys was going to give up on this but After going down the shed with a cuppa this evening and looking at the bike I thought sod it ill have another go. Update then.... The bolt came out rather easier than thought... The engine is now OUT.... The carb is off and has been stripped and cleaned. Think I will still get someone else to do the bearings as im not sure now if i could do more bad than good by doing it myself.... at least i have saved money of the labour getting it out though cheers for the helpfull advice guys

Hi guys thanks for your advice..... If im being honest is this task too much for me...? The thing is id like to do it purely so I know whats what as I feel it will prove to be valuable. But im already struggling with the main swing arm pivot bolt it just will not move... I think for the sake of it this time I might be a defeatest.... I have stripped the bike down of everything else to which I have learnt a few things... So going by some of the comments I will kindly pass it on I think.... At least by stripping it down to what it is now has saved me some money in labour charges eh... Cheers again guys

Hi all Okay a few of you may know that the main bearings have gone on my bike I have posted a few times and a few of you have replied with very helpfull information. So today was the day I started the project. I have never done anything like this before but am "mechanically minded" Started by taking mudgaurd off, then came the fuel tank. Air box and exhaust. drained radiator and disconnected hoses. removed carb and clutch pin. Removed the front main engine mounting bolt but the other two are tight to get off. The main one at the back that goes through the swing arm should that just pull out after the nut is removed????Can anybody tell me what the cable is that goes into the engine by the flywheel ???and if I need to disconnect it fron up the top or does it slide out as there is a groove that looks like it should.going to start on the mounting bolts on tuesday and hopefully get the engine out. Any tips on any thing im going to encounter would be gratefull or even if there is anything I have done that maybe I shouldnt have. Cheers ill update when im at the next stage........

Hi guys been reading the post so to sum it up what exactly do I need to do the mains on a 2001 290? If someone could reply to what is needed also the best place to get them in the uk. Im in the midlands not sure if there are any local ? Gonna have a go and do it myself

been in touch with the seller and was told its the clutch and the 290 does rattle also there should be lateral play in the flywheel. Im located in solihull. Not sure of a local service/mechanic that looks after these bikes where is the best place to order bits from and I presume that gaskets etc would also be required? Cheers for your help

Hi all im fairly new on here and rejoining trials after some years away I have just recently brought an 01 sherco 290 and the engine on it rattles quite a lot I know they can be noisy but not having much experience I dont know what is classed as normal noise. Im quite a novice with engines but am mechanically minded and good at taking things apart etc. Is there any obvious ways I can find out if this is abnormal or not and if it is is it a fairly "novice" diy project. I have read snippets of main bearings and big end bearing etc. A bit about the bike It was used every week at novice level and had the oil changed every 6 trials Its had new chain and sprockets and the reason for sale was that he got offered a 07 sherco for a good price... well this is what i was told and he did have the bike there. He was a very honest man and dont think he would of sold me a bum bike. Any advice on this would be much appreciated I have downloaded the sherco maintenance poster and have th link for waynes advive. but like i said im a bit of a novice. Thanks in advance guys...

went down to estc today without bike to have a nosey round and was very impressed so im getting my membership sorted will hopefully see some of you down there shortly. seen some very good young riders down there. ill be the one on a sherco with mud all over me...

Yeah thats true. Dont know where his post has gone.. if you read this is there anywhere you go to practise locally or do you go to estc ?

okay I decided on the sherco 290 very well looked after bike and a winner 3 weeks ago at farnham..... Just need to kit myself out with the gear now. Does anybody know of anyone in the midlands area that service these bikes ??

Hi all I have just joined and thought id introduce myself and say hi I am in the birmingham/solihull area and I used to have a ty 175 mony years ago when I was about 13 I have never entered any trials me and my dad used to go to bikenhill when they used to let trials bikes on there land it was actaully a very good practise site. Unfortunately I stopped going because my dad started working wkends and i was still to young to drive and nobody i knew were into trials aswell. Anyway enough of my life basically Im older now (29) and am seriously going to get back into it as without being bigheaded actually thougt i was pretty good. The site i used to go on is now purely motorcross so I am going to register with a local club and get back into it.Going to try and find a local practise site not sure if there is one but will do some research. Have not got a bike yet but am looking at a gas gas at the minute. Ok so thats a bit about me ive no dout ill converse with you at some point speak soon
