  1. Ben

Seriously Ben, keep going and find that debris even if it means straining the oil you removed.

    Dom

Yep wanna make sure all the bits are out. A good size chunk may have become little bits, and left with the oil but you did not see them inside the oil.

  2. Have him stand on the pegs and hold the bars so that there is a straight line from the forearm through the wrist. Elbows slightly bent in normal riding stance. This should give you an idea of how narrow to make the bars. Of course cut sparingly because if need be you can always cut more off, it is a little more expensive to add to the bars.

  3. Your so right! at first I used to give it a go every time the lads used to say go on then you can do it, lol. I would say 9.5 x out of 10 I would fall off with no control. I know that sounds odd- fall off with control but I bet you all know what I mean.

I never used to be able to control the bike in my first few outings so the falls started to become expensive. it was when I ended up launching my bike up a tree & braking both mudguards clean off that I took a step back & started to learn trials right from the beginning.

I am about 5 months in now, only riding once a week over winter & can not believe what I am capable of compared to the start.

Apart from the confidence & small obstetrical's I manage to get over, the biggest change is that now I can fall off my bike with grace & keep control to minimize any damage.

Such a long way to go before I get anywhere near where I would like to be. I feel at 44 my knees will give up before I do.

I do understand falling off with control, I refer to it as crashing with style! :banana2:

Yes learning the basics is the way to go for a long future in the sport. At the beginning it may seem boring or that you are not progressing well, but like you said if you look back after learning the basics you will realize how much you have actually improved. One thing that nobody will notice except yourself is how comfortable you feel when you climb on the bike, even just riding down the trail, after you have practiced and learned the basics.

I will be 40 in a few months, so not too far behind you there. I have arthritis in one knee, Knee brace, exercise and anti-inflammatory meds go a long way to keep the pain away. But assuming your knees are in good health, they will only get stronger, albeit they will be very tired first................ ;)

  4. Damned axle pinch bolt snapped off in the front fork, though....

The 2000 Sherco I had also had a pinch bolt snapped off when I bought it. I tried drilling, easy-out and even cursing and swearing and I could not get it out. I ended up going a bit on the extreme side but this worked.

disassembled the fork down to just the lower tube, took it to local "Awesome Welder Man". He ended up cutting a channel in the fork tube and filling it in with weld. He then re-drilled and tapped a new hole to the size bolt I provided. two side effects of welding was the "pinch" area also ended up being welded, so after drilling and tapping the hole he re-cut the slit in the "pinch" area of the fork. The other side effect was the powder coat was totally ruined due to the heat.

But from a function standpoint I had zero problems with it after it was fixed and I think I rode it for about yrs after the repair, as far as from a "fashion" standpoint I used a buddies home powder coat machine and an electric roaster to re-do the powder coat in black and it looked pretty good.

    Good luck

  5. thanks again, keep the suggestions coming though. I don't get much advise from my riding friends because we are all novice's.

I bet you hear a bunch of "You can do it! just give it more gas!.............oh you crashed? HAHAHAHAHA Try again! with MORE gas" :D Those guys are the most fun to ride with. :D

Don't be afraid to try different settings of the equipment on the bike. levers, bar position, bar height, bar width, etc.... Make the bike fit you and you will be more comfortable and will ride better for it.

  6. Put thy buttocks as far back on rear fender as you can.

Once thou hath done this you may modulate how far back you need to be for a successful ride.

Also try to not put much weight on your hands, Most of the time your legs take care of the Weight.

If you are just naturally leaning too far forward even when riding on flat ground you may need to get taller bars or even cut the bars shorter. (I will 'splain: If the bars are narrower then your hands move in toward center of bike and this will naturally move your shoulders back and straighten your back. If you are having back pain/strain when you ride this may help.) Of course going too narrow will have negative effects also, gotta find that "perfect spot"

I had to narrow my bars a little bit to get a straight line from my forearm through my wrist, greatly reduced wrist pain.

  7. If thats the case, I would pull the top end and have a looksie. Better safe than sorry and you'll have peace of mind to boot. Its pretty easy to do - just buy a head oring set and base gasket along with any other parts you find you need.

Might be able to get away with just the base gasket and leave the head attached to the cylinder. This is an optimistic view though, because if it is "gritty" sounding in the cylinder then there are probably scratches in the cylinder wall from whatever is scraping. and may need to remove head and get cylinder replated etc..

If not piston/ring and cylinder related then Connecting rod bearings maybe??

  8. What I enjoy is seeing people that ride extremely well just having a good time when they ride. Goofing off, wearing their fire breathing penguin gear, shorts or whatever. I enjoy seeing how well the top riders can ride but sometimes they are a bit "intense", not showing any emotion, really focused on the section. I like to watch the goofy guys get a really good ride, that is what keeps me going. The more fun I have, the better I ride.

But as always the best part of the sport is the diversity of the riders and observers and how well we all get along and help each other out. The wide range from the "intense" rider to the "goofy" rider is what really makes our sport THE BEST MOTOR SPORT!!

The laddos got a reputation for having a laugh but he's trying to make a valid point this time.

Aye and A good point he hath made,

Again My sense of humor is a bit............off the norm,

But like the man says, ya gotta find the chips/chunks that are floating around.

    Yeah, I understand, Ham2 and b40rt!!! :icon_salut: I appreciate the warning!

I'm thinking that's a way to make even more problems for myself that I really don't want.... :wall: I guess a person needs to squeeze their clutch lever in a responsible way, huh?

    Jimmie

    Always wear gloves???? ;)

  10. I ordered a new rim strip for my leaking rear wheel...........I have not taken the tire off to inspect whether that is the problem or not, but I ordered one.

I also took the Old B.A.G.G. (Old Bad Ass Gas Gas) off the stand and did some balancing and hopping with the motor off.

When I was done I showed my appreciation by squeezing the clutch lever.

  11. I prefer to use the BP5ES but if I cannot get that one I get the BPR5ES which is the Resistor version of the plug. From what I understand the Resistor keeps the radio on your bike from getting interference from the plug when it is firing. Now I don't have a fancy radio on my trials bike (just the one rattling around in my head) and I prefer that if I don't need an extra bit then I don't use the extra bit.

But on the flip side the Resistor plug does work just fine and I have not had any adverse effects from using it. (but I do notice the buzzing static in my head is a bit less with the R plug. :hyper: )

  12. Mr Neutron,

I forgot to give opinion on rattling noise, I would suspect you won't know for sure until you pop that clutch cover off. Sounds like it will be quite a bit of time before that will happen. But good luck with the knee and the rattle noise, hopefully neither one will be too expensive.

  13. mr neutron,

Good luck with the knee replacement hope all goes well. just remember "Chicks dig scars"

Maybe you should keep your skills up to speed with the Trials HD/EVO (No I have no financial stake in these games. I just really enjoy them and want others to have a good time as well)

  14. i never get problems finding neutral when its up to running temp, only when the engine is cold. if you're having difficulty, normally a handful of revs will assist in finding neutral

On a side note a handful of revs and quick release of the clutch will assist you in finding the ground. :D

Well, Congrats on getting through your first Trial, Shipdamite!! I ride at the Novice level here, and last June I recall being totally flabbergasted (and beaten!) by those tight turns they threw at us Newbies. I had way more 5s & 3s than I thought I'd get. I'd been to watch a couple of local trials, and sitting alongside the Novice sections, thought they looked pretty easy. Man, was I ever wrong! But I did have a boatload of fun, however. The guys on the two twinshock bikes I rode with were great to ride with.....Stay with it; it actually does get easier, sometimes..... Zippy, you must be Blessed Amongst Men! You have a Gas Gas Trials bike, a Truck of Death, a Lucky Penguin, and the legs of swimsuit model! Well, maybe not the last one there.... I went to your website, and did happen to read the article about knee braces. That's gonna be relevant to me in the future.... Neilh & ShercoBen12, you guys are my Heroes! Anybody that got to ride today, crash, pick their bike up, and ride some more is my Hero! And Ben, is it that warm there to ride in a T-shirt, or are you just gonna ride no matter what? :icon_salut: I did go out to the barn, and after squeezing my clutch lever a few times, thought I'd chance a ride. I should have just hit myself in head with a hammer instead. I went for about 5 minutes, and rode over a stump I've done dozens of times. I didn't clear it this time, and came down on the skid plate. I now have a an expensive sounding clattering noise coming from the clutch side of my bike. :wall: Jimmie

I have seen (and also done this) guys in upper classed (advanced, expert) ride up some hard, gnarly obstacle and then take points on a tight turn. The basics are not too exciting to watch, but very very important to your final score at all levels.

Thank you for the kind words, I am a blessed man. I also have the legs of a swimsuit model, for those looking to purchase swimsuits made for the Buddha body type.

Hope you enjoyed the Team WGASA website, we are working to make it better. But it is mostly a bit of silliness that goes along with how we ride.

Shercoben12 is a teenager and those lads could wear a T-shirt in a blizzard and look at us old farts and say "What? it's not cold out." :hyper:

You may want to pop that clutch cover off and find the source of said noise. Does it make the noise at idle or just when reving? does the sound change with the revs (speed up/slow down) Does it make the noise when the clutch lever is pulled in or when clutch lever is out? I just recently got my Gas Gas so I have not gotten real familiar with it yet. Sorry no tips as to what it might be.

Took another look at my broken leg and dreamed of getting back on my bike soon lol

Heal up quick, as much as you want to ride DON'T go back to it too soon!!! A few weeks of healing is better spent then years of irreversible damage. In the meantime I suggest an Xbox 360 and Trials HD and Trials Evolution as a substitute.

  15. Well he met Chuck, got the correct RMTA and ITSA info. He is almost in a trials hot spot compared to most in the USA. He also started the same thread in another forum, And I have yet to hijack that one!

ummm so that would be a yes, he feels included. :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Hey SlimJim WELCOME TO TRIALS!!!
