Hi all,
I just wanted to tap into the collective knowledge of the sherco contingent here on trials central as I've recently acquired a 290 2010 model which is in good order, with quite a few upgrades, including an ohlins rear shock, hebo footrests, frame guards and a jitsie lanyard kill switch. I was wondering what the value of it might be as I'm considering selling it as it's not really my cup of tea. I took it in PX against an enduros bike so don't really know what it would be worth. And looking online there aren't any 2010's for sale to give me an idea.
I know the ohlins shocks are not cheap and I also wondered if it would fit any later models ? Or is it only suitable for the 2010 as I'd considered selling the shock separate. If I could get a standard one back as part of the deal.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I struggled to find one online but eventually came across this link,
it may help someone in future - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28069907/Montesa_315R_02_2002.pdf

Hi Guys,
Just a quick one to day thanks for your help and advice regarding my difficulties with the Gasser, I spend a few evenings sorting the problems and we were out yesterday and the bike ran as sweet as a nut !!!
after some fun and games de-coking the exhaust and repacking, it's now like a new bike, we just need to teach the rider a thing or two now and all will be well.
So thanks once again for taking the time to assist, your help is Mucho appreciated.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your speedy reply, I didn't notice that the carb bowl would catch the casings if I removed the spacer, but it makes sense now you say it, my mate is just getting back into trials after a long lay off, so he's not in need of ultra sharp throttle respose and wicked torque etc, I'll be leaving the spacer firmly in place !!!
With regard to the head o-ring, I will pull the head off tonight and take a peek, I assume I should see some evidence of the leak?? even though the bike has hardly run since this occured I assume it will have left some tell tale signes that it's gone...
As for the oil filler, I thought If I could not find the filler cap, I would lean it over and pour it right in the clutch directly, would you recommend any particular oil?? the oil in it is PINK !!!! I have ridden for years and never seen pink oil... I was thinking of popping some Putolene light gear oil in it like I used to put in my Mont 315R, it never did it any harm.....
also seeing as you appear to know your stuff, do you know the fork oil weight and capacity for this bike as standard, I was going to go with 5wt as it feels a bit unresponsive at the front to me but I am not sure of the capacity.....
Thanks again for your help.

I have been fortunate enough to get lumbered with servicing my mates bike, it has a few issues, mainly around being choked up and overheating like a good un !!!
It resembles a steam engine more than a trials bike, but I currently have it in a million pieces and have a few questions that I am struggling to find the answers to, I thought that the power of the internet may come to my rescue once again and that I would ask the questions on here for assistance from people power.
I have stripped the bike to allow me to de-coke the exhaust system, and whilst doing so I noticed that the inlet manifold on the bike has a spacer between the reed block and the crank casings, I wondered if this was a standard item, or an aftermarket spacer presumably to soften the power??
If anyone has a bike of the same type, can they take a peek and see if they have the same??
Also, I am not sure how much engine oil is used in the bike, I have looked up and find conflicting advice between 650 and 750ml, can anyone clarify?? Also, where do you pour the oil in??? do you remove the oil level window / bolt??? Forgive me if I am being stupid, only I can

Hi,
I have had this before with a road bike, I pulled the forks apart, so I could roll the stanchions on a flat surfave, I used a pane of glass and looked for a gap appearing along it's lenght as I wolled it, much the same as you would do with a snooker que to see if was bent on a snooker table, the forks are easy enough to pull apart, so don't be scared if you have not done it before post a question on here for more help with that.
I am not sure if the bike you have has one fork for the damping and the other for the spring as you do not mention the year (and I am really a Montesa man.... no spitting please), in which case, one would be easy to compress (the damping leg) and the other would be hard to compress as it has the spring in it so don't be fooled into thinking the legs are bent because of the ease of movement.
I would pop the forks back into the clamps but don't tighten them, don't refit the mudguard stay and see if the axle lines up correctly, you may need to compres one leg to get them lined up vertically, however you need to be more worried about the horizontal alignment, this will give you an idea if they are well bent, as the axle will be quite a way out.
also, look for any signs of visual damage on the stacnchions, they tend to crease if you have given them a real whack...
I hope this helps.

Hi Bradders,
I am based in Dinnington sheffield 33 years old and been riding trials since I was 7 .... and I am STILL Rubbish, however I am sure we could learn a thing or two from each other, if you are interested in meeting up for a day, drop me a line.

I believe its a engine split job... and ensure you get the washers back in the right places for the gearbox shafts etc... or you will have to split it again..... (voice of experience talking)
I guess thats not what you wanted to hear....

Hi,
As a previous owner of a 315, as I remember I changed the standard 40 tooth rear to a 42, (exactly the same as dropping the front from 10 - 9 asanyone knows) I found that slowed the bike down a treat, and also made first gear about useless, but you could ride 3rd gear a hell of a lot more !!!
As I remember but of course could be wrong, I think the 98 & 99 model came with a 40 tooth rear but the 2000 onwards came with 42?? not 100% but I am sure Lurchio the closet Montesa anorak will help on this if he managed to get back from Macau....
-
Its also worth mentioning that the Right hand leg deals with damping, so the left leg will never feel like the right one as it does not have any adjustments or the same action. you'll notice the compression adjustment on the Left leg an allen key. with the damping adjuster knob on the right... As I remember...
-
Hiya,
I popped a set of Boysen Reeds in my 2002 315 and it made the engine so much crisper and cleaner revving all through the range, as I remember they were about
-
Hey Lurchio,
First of all, good luck in finding a 'vintage' Gas Gas, to the best of my knowledge all the 07 - 08 Gassers will either have been broken down for spares, or popped in a glass case for 'viewing' purposes only.
If you can convince the owner of a glass case one to part with it, I suspect you'll just need to renew every bearing, seal, suspension bush, swing arm pivot, re-pack the silencer, pop a new water pump in, piston & rings and possibly re-polish most of the alloy parts, and then I guess you'll have a solid 3 weeks of trouble free riding (assuming you only want to ride around a club trial on a sunday following your lad and not actually compete).
They are becoming almost as historical as a Montesa from Sandifords.... but without the HRC reliability or build quality....
just take a look down the gas gas forum page to get the answer....

Does anyone have a copy of the section analysis from 2008??? or can anyone point me to a link i would appreciate it.
-
Hi Jools,
Thanks for the great clip, nothing wrong with the quality from my angle, the fact that your camera / phone was not fast enough to catch him in the other sections just about says it all!!!
I notice that the PB's charity page has now hit over
-
Hey Billy,
Bad luck, sorry to hear of your troubles yesterday, it's one of those trials where you need more than your fair share of luck to be in with a chance of finishing, With regard to clips of Paul riding yesterday, I have just unearthed a video of him going through surrender for what looks like a 3 !!!!
I fived the damn thing on a trials bike, mainly due to chocolate arms, but at least I got to it this year !!!
Take a look
What a rider, what a guy, and what a brave ride..
My mate has just been telling me that he was speaking to PB at the cricket club on saturday night, and was astounded to hear that he's not a 'Full Time' rider, he holds down a normal job too !!!!! I ask you??!!???!?!
I think if he went in a phone box and spun round twice, he'd exit with a bright red cape and his underpants on the outside of his trousers...
I see that his charity page has now hit over
-
I wonder how many of the 'doubters' from the off road community who have sniggered and finger pointed and given him 'no chance at all' of finishing the worlds toughest trial had the decency to pop over to him on the finish line and give him a few quid towards his worthy cause???
I must admit, having had a go at the trial, both last year and this I had half an idea just how hard it really is (having got about half way round), and I thought he would 'do well' to get around the course at all, never mind in time, interestingly I noticed most of the sniggers and negativity came from people who appeared to be short of a bike, official entry number and a start time !!!! At least I was having a go so I at least felt I had earned the right to have an opinion.
I would like to congratulate Paul on his magnificent achievement, he really did have an incredible ride, finishing the best part of half an hour WITHIN TIME !!!!!
I was somewhat disappointed to hear he has raised in the region of

Its all rubbish, Brand is a clown and Ross a fat overpaid goon who can't even foooking speak properly... where do you queue up for a job like theirs??
Andrew Sachs has more comedic talent in what's left of his (no doubt) wrinkley scrotum than Brand and Ross combined. I agree that Sach's granddaughter is as gormless as the two idiots who abused her grandad, but that doesn't give Ross or Brand the right to use our money to abuse him at length...... for minimal amusement.... if he had answered he would have run rings round em....
It reminds me of a song from a long lost musical..... Wizard of Oz.... 'If they only had a brain'
Now let's sack them both and fill their screen time with someone who has a discernible talent... Tony Bou, Dougie et all.... shall we make a suggestion to the Beeb ??

Hiya
This is a usual problem for the Mont 315R, first thing I would do is change the gearbox oil so you know its new, then change every 5 or so rides, dependant upon what you are doing... the clutch wont work until the engine is warm so I always fire it up, give it about 3 - 5 mins tickover / light revving without choke, then push myself forward and pop into gear without the clutch, make sure you have some space run around with the clutch pulled in, and apply gentle front brake until the clutch 'pops' and begins to work, it should free up pretty quickly... if the bike creeps forwards after it is up to temp, use the adjuster on the lever to give a little more travel... if it still creeps, back to the beginning of the post... change the oil...
I tend to find the clutch begins to drag a little when the oil requires changing. If it's really bad at the moment, it may be worth having the clutch plates out , which will mean a half hour with the spanners.
Dunno how mechanical you are, but with a few basic tools... a 8mm and 10mm socket / spanner, I believe you will be able to get the clutch plates in your hand.
Drop me a PM if you need further guidance, I may have a manual for sale for the mont, but it'll be a 2002 copy but it's the same bike...
A good upgrade for the mont is a set of Boysen Reeds, which can be a pain in the rear to fit, but not too bad with a little patience. it will clear up the bike throughout the rev range and make it as crisp as it should be, they are about
-
change your engine oil regularly and your clutch troubles will end...
Do it every 5 ish rides and you will have no bother in my experience.. clutch works ok on both 315 or 4rt after initial start up and warm up procedure followed of course

I bought a VW Transporter T4 2000 model in 2001 and I am still running it as main transport and trials bike transport to this very day... It had 22,500 miles on it when I purchased it (from my dad he was only other owner) and it has run perfectly ever since... Original tyres did 75,000 miles, its on 111,000 now still on original exhaust, battery, brake disks, and all the rest, service it every 10,000 at local garage now for about 100 quid and I only ever lift the bonnet to fill up wash wipe bottle... now that's one reason to like the germans....
I understand comments about headroom for getting changed, but its a whole lot better than getting changed outside when you have a car or small van !!!
if you are due to buy a van buy a VW !!!! or maybe a vito at a push... you can get them for sensible money nowerdays...
-
Haslams didn't start as far as I am aware, but Leon C and his pal... can't remember his name... got off grouse moore and nearly to 4th petrol check as far as I am aware....
What a great effort from them both, I was speaking to Leon after he finished and he said he had never ridden in a trial before !!!!! He said he now has a bit more of an understanding and a LOT more respect for the top trials riders... good on him I say...
Hows about entering Dougie in the BSB next year as a wildcard at say brands??? think he would make 3/4's distance???
I will have to find out Leon mates name as he deserves a round of applause too !!!

Hey Billy, Thanks for the response... you really have taken this a darn sight more seriously than me, I am 32yrs old, have smoked half my life and have the lung capacity of 2 packs of Wotsits. The Breathing aspect of trials have always been my problem and about 3 months ago when on a local trial, 2 and a half laps into a 10 section 4 lapper, my head was beetroot red and I needed to lay down.... I decided there and then that I had smoked my last ciggy, something I have been promising myself for years and years, Finally I have managed to crack the habit, the lung capacity is up to wotsits grab bags and improving daily !!!
I am approx 12 (ish) stone (the mrs is laughing) and quite athletically built, I have ridden trials since I was a wee boy, so I have always had a reasonable upper body strength....
My 'Training' was more swimming related, on the 2 week all inclusive break I took the first 2 weeks of October in Cuba.
My 'arm work' consisted of mostly half pint glasses of amber nectar as the pints were getting warm as I am quite a slow drinker...
I have done a few enduro's historically, and thought that the scott would be more like that, you know, knackered in half an hour and keep plugging away until i see the end or run out of time...
My good mate Ian McMahon #65 this year (I think) has done the weston beach race in recent years and also 'The Tough One' and said the scott blows them into the weeds....
So the training you have done is really a world apart. I like the fact that you didn't run for hours on end as I hate running, I though about giving the mountain bike some hammer in the peaks with some gym work and a continuation of non smoking would get me closer to the shape required for next year... I am gonna start now !!! well maybe tomorrow....
Any training will be an improvement i suspect... :-)

What a great effort mate, I can't applaud you enough, I had a go myself for the first time this year, you'll know what I mean when I say that you can't put into words just how hard the Scott is.... both physically and mentally.
Talk about under estimating the scale of the trial, I have watched it for the last 3 years and really fancied a go... I set my goal (dream) of trying to get to the finish, either in or out of time, and guess what, I got nowhere near !!! I didn't even get through a 1/4 of the Sections !!!!
After 15 sections I took a trip over the bars and dislocated my fingers on my throttle hand, a deep hole jumped out on me on a flat out section of the moors.. to say that I was quite happy that my fingers were all displaced just shows how knackered I was and how much the Scott trial messes with you mentally, I have never ever done anything quite so extreme....
After the first 10 miles I was wishing I was riding a Beta, or something with half a chance of breaking down, as the Montesa 4RT I was on just kept on going !!! I would have paid for the thing to blow up !!!!
I really enjoyed the trial however (after a hot bath and some strapping on my fingers) and I have given myself the task of getting a whole lot fitter and giving it another (proper) go next year. If I can make it further than this year that will be my achievement, I won't even contemplate getting over the finish line... that would be a dream...
if you could give any advice on fitness plans, I would be more than interested to have a look just to see what you have put yourself through this year to achieve what you did.
Anyway, I will stop aggravating the finger injury typing this and I hope to see you next year !!
