Wow . . .that man can RIDE!!!! I guess I never really thought about him on a push bike - that was impressive!!
-
Such poetry!! I'll bet it looks nothing like poetry in motion when I do it! Mind you, I've seen some very smooth and practised get offs for when you find too much grip. I don't know how its done so gracefully. I always land in a heap under the bike!
Gah, not ridden in a month, and not riding for another month at least. The withdrawal is severe, going out of my way to find mud and rocks wherever I am . . .

Evening!
I've just about moved up from wobblers (at last!)
Cambers of any type used to scare the beejeezus out of me, and all of my falls were on cambers, sometimes pathetic little things!
The main thing I've learned is not to be afraid of them, and I think that's the hardest thing to overcome (certainly was for me!)
Before you get to the turn, make sure you are totally centered and relaxed, fingers on levers etc just how you like it.
I find that if the turn is quite shallow, then I tend to stay in the centre of bike, and use peg and bar pressure to edge the bike up the hill and into the turn. I usually just push down on that side with my toes in my boot, and that's enough to keep balanced and centered properly.
If the turn is quite tight, then I climb all over the bike with arms and legs everywhere! I really lean the bike into the turn, with my outside knee cocked right out and my elbow pointing to the heavens. I keep my weight fairly well back, but with pressure on the bars to keep the front planted. I try not to use the clutch for those kinds of turns, but sometimes I find it balances the bike against the hill and gives a bit more time to get the balance just right.
After that, its just throttle control and weight juggling so neither the front nor rear wheels slip anywhere!
Hope I've been some help!
Pete.

If you end up north of High Wycombe, you're not too far away from the likes of Bagshot Heath and Hungry Hill. North Hants MC and Thames MCC use that area quite a lot, some of the MOD land is brilliant!
-
Bagshot last year . . . can't really remember! This year it was really tough, you didn't really miss much. 1st time in 5 years or so I've not finished a trial! Real shame as the last few have been spot on.
I think the Charity Trial is on Sunday 14th (its usually Sat!) I'll be along - always a good crack! Wonder if I'll get anything in the raffle . . .
Tom1 - the previous owner had it done! I do love it, makes a good looking bike look great! I love that blue on anything though . . . I'm always careful not to crack it or bend it, though its been repaired loads of time already!

About 70% of that will be in taxes!
No more than 2 months ago we in England were paying around

So far, 8years riding,I've been very lucky with regard to crashes! Never anything worse than a bruise and some small scrapes. I put it down to sheer bloody mindedness. 'NO, I'm NOT going to hit the ground!' There was one crash earlier this year, I'm told I got my head on a tree and the observer didn't expect me to bounce up straight away! (Thank god for lids!)
I've never worn any protection other than gloves, boots and a lid. I have braces on my knees 'coz they get sore quite a lot, but that's just to keep heat in and keep the joints together!
I must say I've always thought that knee pads would be restrictive, especially under the skinny Trials jeans everyone seems to wear! Elbow pads look awkward and again restrictive, but I do see there are advantages in wearing them. Being a Southern Softie I very very rarely ride anything resembling a rock, but I can imagine that those who do regularly are a lot more at risk of getting kneecapped.
In a roundabout way I guess I'm trying to say while I've no real need (at the moment!) of extra protection, I can quite see that there are those who do! I would argue that a real novice could benefit from the extra feeling of security offered, but that same novice could be at a disadvantage when he/she improves, as the pads would restrict movement. I reckon it would take a few years of riding for the restrictions to be noticeable and to have a detrimental effect, by which time the novice is no longer, and is less likely to have a fall. I guess then one could say that getting better means tougher sections, which means potential falls are potentially worse, which increases the need for pads . . . a vicious circle!
Thankfully the mud is nice and soft around here, so falls are soft een if the washing machine does get a workout!
Just my tuppence worth!
Pete.

Errrrr . . . . .helloooooo Mr Frenchman?!? Wakey Wakey!!! He WAS awake? Oh . . . . .

Found this link on a cycling forum - a bike messenger race somewhere in America. Mind blowing stuff!

Enjoy

Grrrr yeah I heard about that. Same weekend for the last 30 years and the MOD cancel! Was really looking forward to it, always well worth the trip to watch! The chairs assaulting Hungry Hill itself is a sight to behold!
-
Afraid to say that all I've heard is its off!
The MOD pulled out before Christmas I think - something to do with manouvers or training or something.
Its been the same weekend at the same place for 30 years - surely the MOD would have got the idea by now!
A great shame as some friends of my Dads rode the 1st one 30 years ago and were all getting together to ride this year! One of 'em even built up his old bike from that time!
Heres hoping it will be on later in the year

Not a Trials course - more a downhill MTB track but good for you adrenaline junkies!

About April last year I made a switch from an '00, 125 Sherco to an '04 125 Scorpa syf. I think I'd been on the Sherco about 2 years, maybe 3.
The first thing that I noticed was the difference in the steering. The Sherco was a lot quicker and the Scorpa felt like it was trying to fall inside in a turn. The best bit about changing is the engine. On the two stroke I would get myself into trouble by using too little throttle when a handful would have been better. Sometimes it worked 'coz weighing nothing I could usually find grip anyway. I think that kind of riding suits itself to a 4stroke far more than a 2.
With the Scorpa, it just grips and grips and grips with very little throttle. Its absolubtly brilliant! One of the Star Group Trials at Sethern in Dunsfold was an absolute mudbath. Pouring rain all day, and with the ground being hard clay with leaf mulch over the top it was like ice. There was one climb that most people were struggling on, including the best riders in the class (the easiest!) Where the good riders couldn't go with their 250 2 strokes, the little Scorpa just pulled and pulled and pulled and made it look easy - entirely down to the bike! I never used to like riding in mud that much, but now I love it!
If only the back brake would behave and the tyres didn't slip on the rims . . .

Hmmm. I've often thought about pads and guards etc. Always go with the standard Gloves boots and a lid, always have done so to go without would feel strange! My knees are fairly dodgy so a pair of simple braces from Boots are standard equipment. Helps to keep them warm and gives enough support to keep things in line.
One crash a few weeks ago I wished I had had something over my spine - my lid stopped any damage to the empty brain case, in fact didn't know I hit my head 'till the bloke who picked me up looked amazed to see me awake!
One other thing I've thought of is a cricket box - I don't often come off the bike, but I'm getting quite good at the dance of the nutcracker! Thats definitely a part of pre-65's thats not so much fun!
On th whole I think that any padding apart from thick jeans and a good tough jumper would be a bit restrictive. I can't believe that a one piece thin lycra suit has any advantages at all! Whenver I see a rider at full stretch, the sleeves are halfway up the arms, the whole thing looks like it will come apart at the seams! Give me jeans and a jersey any day!

I'm not entirely sure on this one. I've been a very slow learner and have only moved off the easy route a few months ago, after nearly 7 years of riding. I started out as the rawest novice, but the real problem has been a lack of confidence and only riding once a month, maybe every 2 months for most of those years.
For the last 3 or so years I've been winning the odd trial on the easy route, finishing consistently high in the end of season results, but with other riders similar to me in ability, mainly the elder generation. Trials would be won on up to 5 during the summer, with about 20 in the winter mud plugs. In '06 I was winning too much, on too few marks but still lacked the confidence to move up. There were still a few others who were close and it was really luck who won - who made the silly dab and got 1 not 0. I took to practising the sections for the next route up after the trial, and when I began to clean a few I moved up in time for the last event of '06.
Early last year I switched bikes and it took a long time to get the new one ready, so 1st time back went for the easy route. Since then I've been on Intermediates and about in the top 1/4 overall.
If someone had said anything about me riding for too long in the easy route, I would have willingly ridden for no award but wouldn't have moved up - I didn't have the confidence that I could ride the harder stuff and not hurt me - or worse, damage the bike! Its only been the last year that something 'clicked' and I've felt able to move up.
I reckon that if someone is winning the easy route/next route up, consistently, on single marks, for a year, then its time to move up or go for no award. Its manners, really, to give someone else a chance of winning. While its very nice to be at the top, I don't think its worth treading on toes.
Just my tuppence worth!
-
oh I like that!!! Man Flu has nearly been conquered but a week later its still hanging on . . .
-
Best fun I've had all year was the 'Old Codgers' trial at Hungry Hill. Borrowed a friends Greeves for the day and had the best day out! All old, British bikes, sections laid out accordingly. Rode around with lots of different people and the atmosphere was fantastic! 1st trial I've ridden where there were people who had come just to spectate!
-
I've been trying on and off for the last 6 months or so. Don't get that much time on the bike so its not easy - usually only fiddling round after I've finished at a Trial. Now and then I can get the front to move where I want it but rarely can I balance afterwards. Can hardly lift the rear at all! Guess I'm a bit cautious about going over the bars! Daft thing is I can hop and skip and bounce no problem on almost any push bike - I've ridden cycle trials but like a bit of hopping!
Best example of hopping I've seen is on Ryan Youngs' Training video - he explains exactly how to do it and does it nice and slow and exaggerates everything so its easy to see. Still can't do it though!!!
I guess I'm in the minority too being 19 and unable to hop . . .
-
So it is! Next time will looks properly!
-
Looks to me like its got two Trials front tyres on - unless theres' something in the rules somewhere that makes it compulsory to have a different sized tyre at the rear then it should be ok!
Of course I might be talking out of my
Can't see there would be any problems though!
Looks a great bit of kit - although I would want the headstock to beefed up! The rear - shock mount looks a bit flimsy as well I have to say. All in all it looks great!!
-
thats a point!! I wonder how much CO2 I put out for an hours' cycling compared to 40mins in the car? would quite interesting to find out!
-
hmm, think you've got it cheap HB&J! Up to 104.9 around here, did see 106.9 for unleaded somewhere! Cycling to college now - 12 miles each way. Good exercise!
-
Hello and welcome!
There are some bikes/makes that just rattle as standard. I've not heard a rattly GasGas so I guess they are usually sewing machine quiet. Shercos' on the other always rattle - its a peculiarity of the breed. I'm not sure about the 2stroke Scorpas' I think its still the Yamaha engine though? I've never noticed one rattling but I've never ridden one so can't really say!
I've never heard of silencers'/ exhausts' being changed as routine, only if they get damaged in any way. Sometimes a silencer might get clogged with burnt oil etc but most people seem to clean them out somehow! Silencers especially aren't cheap! As for engine bits, many people I know do a complete stripdown once a year, some maybe once every two years. Mostly pistons last longer than ownership of the bike! Since everything's in bits bearings/rings get replaced 'just in case'. I've always reckoned on checking everything external every 6 months and re-grease nuts and bolts/spindles etc. The more often you grease the swingarm spindles the better! Mostly its just general maintenance.
Having said all this I'm sure there will be someone who does things differently - there always is!
All the best!
Pete.
-
here here! Kickstart and junior kisckstart - one of the sections for the adults would have to be to ride with no front wheel! Would pull a crowd!
There's usually coverage of the indoor on Eurosport about the week after the trial - at least thats' the only time I've ever caught it! Its definitely on, but always at odd times so you;ve got to keep a close eye out.
All the best!
Pete.
-
Hmm . . .
Mainly looks like an RS200/250 engine looks too big for a 125.
Tank/seat unit looks Seeley and possibly the forks/yokes. Swing arm looks more RS to me. But then I don't know that much so will leave it to the experts for the definitive conclusion!
Very interesting though!
