  1. Never mind all the rules and regulations. What ever happened to common decency and respect for others?
  2. I've used 80mls of synthetic oil to 5 litres of fuel since new on my 05 SY250 and feel happy with that. I keep the air cleaner really clean and lightly oiled which helps to keep the carb free from dust as it's a pain to remove. I've never managed to get more than 400mls of oil in the gearbox. I've tried draining it from the small bolt on the other side and even lying it down but can't get anymore out or in without over filling it. That said, I change the oil quite often and it always looks in clean condition. While you have the bike apart, it's also worth checking that the block ontop of the motor has been ground off. If left standard it wears a hole in the centre box of the exhaust.
  3. The Colmore Cup Centenary. To all those interested in the Colmore Cup Trial, 2011 will be its centenary year, the event first being held on 25th February 1911. To celebrate this the club is intending to organise several events during the first part of the year. The events proposed are:- A stand at the Classic off-road motor cycle show at Telford on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of February, where machines to represent the decades of the trial will be on display. Information on the various other events to be held will be available. A slide show presentation of the early event will be shown. Other ideas still in the pipeline. The Colmore Cup Trial in February/March will be in its usual format, but with some extra features, notably a
  4. Riders just tend to lift their foot off the footrest to change gear. I often ride a whole trial and only use 1st gear on the sections, it's quite rare for me to change gear in a section. The only time I tend to change gear if there's a very tight technical part followed by a big climb.

  6. There probably are some older trials bikes that originaly had a seperate oil tank for the two stroke oil, how about the TY80? I can't think of ever seeing a modern trials bike that wasn't pre-mix.

I was riding in a trial many years ago and the rider infront fell off and couldn't stop his bike from reving, a number of us were trying to help when a young girl who was also riding calmly walked up and stopped the bike with her gloved hand over the exhaust. She just shrugged and told us that was what her Dad had showed her to do!
  8. A few years back I remember thinking "I'll put the new chain on after the next event." The chain broke, it wrapped around the front sprocket and destroyed the engine. Keeping that chain for one more outing cost me
  9. It looks as if the casing has been fractured most of the way through for a while. Just one of those things. I'd get it welded and have a plate put on the outside across the welds to help strengthen it.

  11. As the Six Days was held in Scotland with just one route, what system was used for that? Is it under the jurasdiction of the SACU?
  12. Fully behind you on that one. We have been running the coloured arrow system for three years now and the riders unanimously like it. If you go the wrong side of an arrow with your colour on it, then it's only you to blame. Couldn't be simpler. Look at your colour and ignore all of the others. I often hear the "Blue left, Red right.... it's always been like that!" argument, but then they are often the same riders who ride the easy route on pairs of whites or what ever. Blue/Red for the main route and pairs of whites for the other route is bonkers. If you need two colours on the main route, then you also need two colours onthe other routes. Try setting out a trial with four routes using two colours on each!!!!!! Acid trip! The whole thing is so easy. Descide on the colour for each of four routes. Make it a national standard. Start using it from 1st Jan. Job done.
  13. Gets my vote, I've campaigned the ACU for some time on this subject. Most clubs already use red,blue,yellow,green markers so a change to this format wouldn't be too expensive. Clubs could use pairs of same coloured squares rather than arrows if they wished, although it wouldn't be too much trouble to draw arrows on the squares. Clubs which use flags might struggle a bit more, the course setters would just have to be careful to use obvious pairs. The biggest problem to overcome is the "We've always done it our way, so why should we change" attitude. Why fix something that isn't broke? Or is it!
  14. I bought a new Sherco and stripped the rear suspension bushes down to give them some extra grease only to find they were completely dry from new. Well worth doing!
  15. The ACU's nearest neighbour is the SACU.... I wonder what they do? Perhaps they have a standard system?
  16. We try to put on four routes if it's a youth round (also open to Adults) ABC&(D/E) It's almost impossible to use blue/left, red/right etc for rour routes so we use coloured arrows. Red A (Expert) Blue B (Clubman/Over 40) Yellow C (Beginner/Trail/ Pre-65) White D/E (First timers and small wheels) It's a lot of work but all the riders need to do is remember the colour of the route they are riding and ignore all other colours. Simply ride between the arrows of your colour. For riders, it couldn't be simpler and is univerally liked, however it is hard work for the course plotters as you use so many markers.
  17. I've had my '05 from new and it still sounds fairly quiet, (I only ride the easy stuff) I have noticed others that sound quite mechanical, even fairly new ones. As mentioned above, it really is difficult to say without hearing it run.

  19. I think you will find that even dealers have to take used bike for the DVLA test if they are requested.
  20. In my case, and I've done a trials bike and an enduro bike, the inspection is a formality. They did just check the engine and frame numbers and that the bike was a trials/enduro bike and therefore exempt from the full roadworthy test. We are lucky that we have this exemption, it means that you can get a trials/enduro bike registered without all the road equipment. Mirrors, tyres etc etc etc. I am lucky as my local office is at Worcester and is only 20 miles away, but I'm pretty sure there is no way to avoid it once they've chosen your bike to test. They obviously only do a sample number and not every one. I didn't even take mine off the trailer, I just made it look as new as I could. Good clean, pumped the tyres up and put the front lights back on. I hope this helps. Pete
  21. I agree that it is wrong to ride a section that you have set out prior to competing but asking people who have set out not to compete would just about finish us off as a club. Without riders setting out sections, we wouldn't have any club trials and probably not enough people to set out any of our Nationals either.
  22. Putting on three routes made a huge difference to us back in 2000, it drew riders into the sport who previously had considered trials to be too hard oftne attracting 80+ to a club trial. Since F&M in 2001, we've never really got numbers back to the same level at club trials but expect to attract around 50 riders. Our National events are still looking healthy attracting 100+ entries, apart from the OK Supreme LDT due to be held this week which has sadly been cancelled. Now this brings me onto the main issue we face; willing club organisers. This is an area where trials are suffering, finding new helpers is really rare, it's the same 10 to 12 people running events as it was 10 years ago. Some clubs have it even worse with the same one or two doing it. Part of the problem is attracting the Youth riders. Without youngsters we don't get the parents involved who might be prepared to help run the club. Providing trials with three or even four routes for the kids hasn't helped in this area, even at the Midland Centre Youth round we held recently it didn't attract very many. Without the new/young blood coming into the sport over the next ten years or so, we will start to struggle to acutally stage events and this is where trials is suffering a decline more than anything.   23. Looking at the results the B route was just about spot on, it looks as if we missed a good event. Well done to the Dudley club for winning the championship again.
