Thanks for the kind comments.
The bike come with the wrong tank and seat combination. Since I had to buy a new tank I thought I'd go the later style. Especially when a local Australian Trials champion had the tank made for me specifically. It's fibreglass and it has a linning/sealant inside it. Said Trials champion also painted the tank and air box for me too. Special thanks go to Greg for your help. If he could only guide me in the correct way to ride it that would finish it off completely.
I purchased the bike Feb 09. It has taken a while , but I have 6 other bikes as well.
Hello sherpa325 glad you like the tank. Sorry to say I think it was a limited run. I could possibly put you in touch with someone that may be able to get you one.
Hello sunny, funny you mention the seat. It is aluminium base and home made cover. It was originally fitted to my riding mates 199. I told him it was the ugliest seat I had ever seen. With that he purchased a new seat and I ended up with the old one.
I'll be riding it this week end in the 4th round of our local club trials. http://www.denmanmcc.com/
Thanks again

Hello everyone,
Just finished my 159 restoration. Don't have any pre photo's. But it was in a very poor state.
Anyway, hope you like it.

Well I bought the correct crank off ebay in the UK. That only took 4 months. But all good things come to those that wait.
So I'll still try my modified crank and see how it goes. But fitting the correct crank will at least make me feel better inside.
Happy
Riding

I've had an update on the tank and air box. They will be finished by Friday next week.
I'll post some pic's when I get them
And one for the Italjet fans

Hello Again,
Well I have balanced the 250 Pursang crank and assembled it in the engine.Fitted into my 159 cases.I just started it up today and it sounds great, Or should that be ,feels great.I haven't ridden it yet as I have the wrong carb fitted and no tank or seat. The carb fitted at the moment was the one I bought with the bike. It's a Keihin 36mm of a CR125 honda early model.Oddly enough it runs really sweet. Idles nice too.
But I'll replace it with a smaller carb when I find one.A Amal mark2.
I have had a new tank made, that should read(a friend of mine had a 3 tanks made and one of them is mine) 199 tank, fiberglass. It looks great. The tank and air box are being painted blue. Why , because I like blue.I know it's supposed to be red .but hey.
Well if I could list a photo I would.
Well that's it for now.I'll keep you posted.
Brian

Thanks for that Carl.
I have just reassembled the bully engine.I found a pursang 250 crank and balanced it to suit the 350 engine.
I haven't had it running yet.The new tank has been made a good friend is painting it along with my air cleaner.
So hopefully I'll get to ride it before the new season starts here.
I know what you mean about lack of parts for the Italjet. But I have had no problems in one season's worth of use.
Also I have a spare engine as well.
Good luck with the rebuild.
Cheers

I wouldn't knock the Italjet so quickly.I have one that I competed with this year .I have the Green 350t. The bike has a Yamaha ty350 front wheel and a reed valve fitted.I like the bike alot. Good luck with it.
The SWM is a nice machine.

Hello Felix,
Thankyou for the offer of translating that balancing article.I might take you up on it later. The Italjet crank is my next option.I have a photo of the engine dismantled out of a 1980's magazine. The crank looks the same. But I'll dismantle my spare engine and measure it up. The italjet had a 83.7mm bore standard. That's quite close to my 84.2mm bore I have now.
Thanks again

Hello Dave, Noted
Yes I did have a 64mm crank in the engine, but was joking about the pursang cylinder.I'm not man enough.
Trying to get a Alpina cylinder would appear just as difficult as getting a 350T crank.
I am going to look at some more cranks in 2 weeks.I'm hoping to find the correct crank if possible. That way I won't have to bodge up the pursang crank.
Would anyone have a side on picture of the 159 crank I need ? That way I could identify the crank I need easier.
I still haven't ruled out stripping my spare italjet engine to check out the crank in it. It's just the benches are cluttered with a multitude of other bike engine's.
Thanks again
Brian
P.S. There is still the reason that this bike was fitted with this crank. It has a Honda 34mm CR carby fitted and different tail end exhaust section. Was this a rare special developmental model secretly being tested in the rugged outback of Australia? Or simply a stuff up by some dislexic outback bushy? I believe the second statement to be the truth. You need to meet some of my mates if you have any doubt's. Not you (Greg)
-
Hello again,
The only crankshaft I can find so far is out of a mark 9 250 pursang. It is the same. I say that with tongue in cheek.
The balancing will not be correct for sure.
I have been reading some articles on balancing the crank. But has anyone actually done this sucessfully? If so would you care to let me in on any secrets that might make this task easier.
I'll keep reading my articles untill I'm confident to start drilling.
Thanks
Again

Hello Nigel,
Sound's like a dare to me. Get me a pursang barrel and I'll do it.Then we can see if I'm man enough to hold it.
Thanks
-
Hello peter,
The italjet runs the same flywheel.
I like your idea of using the oven when my wife goes out. But wait there's more. There is a 325 crank on UK ebay. But he only ships in the UK.I have a Uncle over there.I'll contact him tonight and see if I can ship it to him and he can ship to me.That sound's easier.
If I stay with this stroke and fit a pursang barrel I'll have 356 cc's. Run a under bike expansion chamber and 38 mm mikuni. Look out hill climb's.
On a more serious note.I'll get the correct crank. Just seems easier. Funny enough though my mate and I compete against each other in twin shock trials. I bought the italjet first and he got a 158 sherpa 250.He rode my bike and liked the 350 power. He then bought a 199a and a 198a.
Then I bought the 159. So he bored his 199a to .75mm over.So I went 1.0mm over.So really it's getting to be a size thing.Mine's bigger than your's. So if I leave the 64mm crank in I win.
I'll keep you posted and see where I end up.I like your idea's though. The spacer under the cylinder leaves the ports intact, but does mess with the cylinder timing.
Can anyone tell me/us what will the effects be on the bike with the intake opening 2mm later and exhaust closing 2mm later. It doesn't sound right but hopefully someone will get what I'm on.
Thanks again
Brian

Hello again,
Refering to my 64mm stroke crankshaft in my 325 sherpa t engine, that should be a 60 mm stroke. Am I disappointed after fitting a new rod kit and assembling the engine cases. You better believe it I am. Should I have checked the stroke? Maybe I should have. But in my defence I bought it as a basket case.
Well I have a Italjet 326cc engine spare sitting on a bench in the shed.Does anyone know if the crank out of it will fit my Bully.I know they share common piston's and rod kits. They have the same flywheel. They share the same bore and stroke.I guess I could strip the engine ,but the work benches are full at the moment.
So if you can help it would be appreciated. I'm on the look out for a crank anyway. But if the italjet one will fit I can just use it.
Thanks again.
Brian
-
Well,
Peterb you are correct. It has a 64mm stroke crank.
Bugger, bugger, bugger. Lucky I have my trusty italjet to keep me going.
I'll have to try and chase a crank now.
Thankyou everyone for your input.

Wow this is the reason you join forums. Can't take for granted that I know everything.
The photo's are great.
The crankshaft may well have been changed. The barrell and cases have 159 numbers on them.
Funny you mention different crank Hewson as the bike was fitted with a 71 sherpa tank and alpina seat. I fitted a new rod kit to the crank.I bought that from BultacoUK.It was the same as the one I removed.I'll check the stroke tomorrow .
I'm not going to be happy if the crank has been changed. The chances of getting the right one will be hard for sure.Or maybe this engine was a special test engine?
-
I agree bultaco steve that the piston I recieved is for a different model. However it had the same pin to crown height as what was left of the old piston.
There was 2 base gaskets fitted when I dismantled the engine.I too believe the Mahle piston to be the better choice, but saying that. My riding buddy fitted a 3rd over mahle piston kit to his 199a and didn't check the ring locator pins. The top ring rotated and removed the top of the piston. And only after 15 mins. These piston kit's in Aus are $315 delivered.A pricey item for sure and come with no warranty. He checked the pins on the new one and I checked mine. They were fine.
The combustion chamber size is 83.2 mm and now my piston is 84.2.I agree it's not much , but I'm skimming it anyway.I don't want the piston or ring coming into contact with it.
I've checked my port timing. I have raised the cylinder 2mm.The transfer ports are 4.5mm above the piston at it's bdc. So 2mm closer will still be alot of difference.Don't see the point of changing them as a 350 has a mile of power anyway.I'll keep you posted when and if I ever get it going.I'll compare it to paul's 199a and see if there is a noticeable difference. The inlet side of the piston skirt was shorter than the exhaust side. I had to shorten the exhaust side 2mm so that I could rotate the engine. With a 1mm gap at the skirt to crankcase. There is still a overlap of 4mm to the exhaust port at top dead centre.
Please feel free to coment as I haven't machined the head or finished bolting in the engine. But please note that piston is staying. If anyone has a piston sitting around and could let me know the skirt lengths I 'd greatly appreciate it.That measurement needs to be from a 159 350 as paul's 199a piston was different. Failing that does anyone have a 360 pursang barrell and chamber to suit. That'll make interesting riding in the tight stuff
Thankyou
Brian

Hello Steve,
I don't have a manual. for spec's, But the piston ring was half it's width above the cylinder's surface.I have rebuilt a lot of other bikes and they don't normally protrude to that extent.
It's a 84.2mm piston .I'm resizing the combustion chamber also to suit the new piston diameter.
Thankyou for all your response's.
-
Hello,
I'm fitting a new piston kit to my 159 350 and I have had to fit 3 base gaskets to get the piston height correct. Is this normal? It's a mahle piston. I've also had to machine 2mm from the exhaust side of the skirt as well.My bultaco dealer said I may have to modify the piston. So I just thought I'd ask if anyone else has had to carry out these mod's while fitting a new piston kit.
Thankyou
-
My artistic mind say's go 199 all the way. But there is that element of doubt. BultacoUK are listing the 199 tank at 125 pounds. $250 our money.Add 50 for postage and it seems resonable. Add another 200 for a seat.I haven't been able to locate a 2nd hand 159 tank. The bike is still a couple month's from completion. So I'll haunt the local sales areas first before I make my decision. To me it doesn't matter if I make the bike less valuable because it's not original. But you know how your riding buddies get.Anything to put me off my game. Thankyou for your thought's.

My mate and I are at logger heads. I have a 159 Sherpa T I'm overhauling to ride . My current stead is a Italjet 350T. But decided to get a bully. Now do I fit the genuine tank to my restoration project or do I go with the later plastic tank and seat from a later bike. Parts are easier to get for a 199. My problem is that the bike was fitted with a '71 tank and unknown seat. Possibly alpina? I want to fit the 199 tank but my mate say's I should keep the bike original.I don't have a 159 tank. He does have a spare but won't part with it.Do you think if I broke into his shed and took it , he'd notice?
Well what are the benefit's of fitting the fibreglass tank versus the plastic?

Hello again,
Just an update on the Italjet 350T V's Bully 199a . I beat my mate twice now.I won C grade and my mate got 2nd.So there the cheap Italjet conquers the mighty Bully. Now before anyone get's upset with that statement. I have gone and bought a 159 Sherpa T.It needs a major birthday and it's getting it. The frame has been sand blasted and powder coated . I have ordered new spokes , rod kit , gaskets and the the like from Bultaco UK. Gee that pete at Bultaco UK is a fantastic bloke to deal with.Nothing is a problem. The forks , rims, engine cases , hubs are out getting polished. I have to get the correct tank and seat.As someone fitted an early tank (1971) and what looks like a dodgy seat. Well that's an update. Please don't tell me that maybe I have more ability than my riding buddy. As my helmet just fit's my fat head as it is. I'll keep you all posted. Cheers Brt650

Hello,
With fitting tapered roller bearings to the steering, are you trying to turn it into a Italjet? Just curious.
If by any chance you don't finish this bike, can you send it to Aus and I'll finish it for you?
Thanks

Ok ok I didn't get the photo's up , but I did get my avatar working. If you must know it's my mum.

Thankyou eneryone for your comments,
Private pratice-I like that.
I like to be different too.
The bike has Classic Falcon rear shocks on it. I'll check the length. They are 340mm long .It also has a Yamaha TY350 front wheel assembly fitted. The one with spokes that run from side to side.
It has me thinking , I could buy my mate a cake everytime I see him. That could even up the weight thing.
The bully seems to have wider bars. Mine are 530mm.
I have taken some photo's. I'll read up on how to post them
Thanks again
