Hi
Technical advice please re Gearbox adjuster plate.
Bike is now back together and took it for ride on the road just to shake it down.
It does not select 4th or 5th correctly (it tries to jump out of gear).
Dots are lined up on the selector gears so I probably have to adjust the cam nut.
So the question is do I ROTATE the cam nut clockwise or anticlockwise to get a more positive 4 - 5th.
All selects fine with out the engine running.
Kind regards

Hello Wayne
Nearly, Cranbrook Road.
In those days I could just pop up to Constitution Hill and make sure all was ok or go over Canford Heath.
Did the Kingswood 2 day and it ran like clockwork.
Last week I stripped it down and got the frame powder coated white and am currently rebuilding ready for the Ilkley round of the SM Champs.
Last big job is to refurb the tank and seat unit, I also need to get an IRC on the back as the Dunlop does not seem as grippy.

I have a very blurry picture of Triss Sharp riding a WASP framed 247 Cota in 1969 at a Weymouth and South Dorset Trial.
Bottom part of the frame was Alloy plate with a fabricated lower engine mount welded to bash plate.
I was competing most weekends from 68 to 72 and I never heard of a Whitlock version but it is quite possible they were produced as a lot of riders felt the original frames were too heavy and would have jumped at chance to get a Whitlock frame. So the demand was there!
Giving the Mont an outing at the Kingswood 2 day this week end and am currently in the final stages of building a 172.

He quoted euro185, free shipping!!
However your post is an original part and keeps the bike authentic.

Hi Chris
Nice straight example of an early Cota.
I tried to get an original silencer from Spain and apparently they are not made!
So I had to cut mine apart and rebuild it.
Frankiemountain has a system that will fit but it is not on the website, it has a round outlet pipe and then uses a further rear silencer that fits to the frame behind the offside shock.
I chose not to go this way but he assures me that the Spanish guys use this system.
Perhaps someone from Spain could comment on this aftermarket part.
Kind regards

Hi Dave
The plan is to get it right then hopefully ride it at Pately Bridge or failing that the Builth Wells event.
As I have said earlier it is all there and now the points have the correct gap runs very well.
Carb is the old original 627 with new jets, slide and needle, however Amal said that if it ticks over evenly then it is not that worn.
Hopefully will have the correct gearing on it by the weekend so will know better then.
Footrests are in the original position so I feel a bit high, but do not want to cut the frame around so will leave and just have to learn to live with it!
I fitted new clutch plates, springs and it judders some times on take up which is why I was querying the oil level. As an experiment I have filled with PJ1 clutch tuner to see if a more modern oil improves things or perhaps the plates just need to bed in. But certainly it will be at some of the rounds this year.
Trouble is, the Bulto is going so well it seems a shame not to use it as it seems like an old freind.
Kind regards

If it helps I could email you (directly)some pictures taken in October 1968 of my original Cota just after I built it!
Quality is not upto digital standards but acceptable for reference purposes.

Hi
I have bought a 48 sprocket and new chain.
I looked at the Mont on eBay and decided not to bid, reason.
Chassis looked complete and the provenace was there. But it had a Sherpa silencer, carb looked incomplete and a few other things made me think it was just too far gone for me at the moment!
My current Mont runs reasonably well and so far has cost me about £1,700 and what's more has original kit throughout.
I just thought I would have been in for at least another 2 grand for a total rebuild including engine and did want to go there.
Mine has the Mk1 engine (which i wanted) just does not have the big hubs.
But good luck to whoever bought it I just hope it does not get broken up for bits.

Hi John
Given the error in the Clymer book re the points gap.
Would you mind checking what Don Morley's book recommends re the oil capacity in the clutch and Gearbox.
Clymer states 200cc and 300cc respectively, which to me seems low!

Hi John
Thank you for that.
Checked and old photo of my 68 Mk1 and 48 seems spot on!
I must admit it was interesting riding with a 40 rear!
Oh well have to order a sprocket and a new Amal now.

All being well yes.
I pleaded insanity!!
Seriously though I hope I have traced the missfire and am riding the Dorset Classic trial Saturday.
If all is well I will be on it at the GV Sunday.
James @ JHS told me that the Clymer manual was wrong and that their recommended points gap of .015" was too big for old electrics to cope with.
I followed his advice and reset them to .010" - .012" and it appears fine (well on the front lawn at least).
Sorry I could not get to the last BC trial I had booked to see FOCUS at the Fleece in Bristol, so only one passout a day!
Kind regards

The other night I was was minding my own business adjusting the Mont's carb, when in came the wife to get to the tumble dryer.
I had to move 2.5 Bultaco's for her to get to it!!
Luckily she did not notice the 325 hulk under the sheet.
But I still got the third degree.
I do like the idea of spider training though.
Oh, the 247 Cota is taxed ready for the road

Hi
Can anyone advise whether the front coil behind the flywheel is the ignition coil please.
Kind regards

-
Hi
You may well be correct, but the stator plates have marks on it that tie up with the 4 deg BTDC.
I will try it Thursday evening.
Greeves, my carb has the same settings as in your post above so at least I am on the right track.
The misfire was tracked down to the coil I fitted one that I had bought (NEW) for my Sherpa before i changed to the Elextrex World setup, however It just would not run above 1/4 throttle and spluttered and popped!!!
I would have thought these coils were generic and would fit Bultaco, Ossa or Montesa.
Any way it feels smooth now.
Kind regards

Hi Chris
The Clymer says time @ 4 deg, which I have done.
However it does kick back which suggests that you are correct it needs to be around 2 deg.
Will see how It goes Sunday and the adjust.
I have got the original system which exits by the r/h shock. Which SM muffler did you buy?
Set the Amal at 25pilot and # 3 slide normall run my Sherpa on 50/1 PJ1 Silverline..
Kind regards

Hi Dave - Andrew
Thank you for the the feed back.
I have bought 25, 30 and 35 pilots to play with.
Interesting comment today from a colleague who just happened to say "Don't forget that when these bikes were made we were using 16/1 or 20/1 ratio fuel oil mixture.
So the viscosity of the fuel was thicker needing bigger jets to get the flow rate.
So today at 60/1 or 50/1 the fuel will flow at the same rate through a smaller jet!"
Seems to make sense!!!!
Anyway thank you, will advise progress.

When I rode the Mont the other week I had a mid range hesitation and the motor would not clear and 4 stroked at the mid to top end as though it is too rich. Symptoms tick over fine, rev then hesitate clear and 4 stroke!!! then fine on tickover.
So I did the following.
Cleaned the carb
Replaced float and viton tipped needle valve and checked the float level, all good.
Checked for air leaks, none that i can see
New crank seals.
So I am thinking that the jets are wrong.
Currently fitted Amal 627 has 40 Pilot, 150 Main and 2 1/2 slide and needle on the middle groove. No excessive wear on slide.
So PLEASE can anyone advise what the standard carb jetting was for a 1970 Concentric 627, I can then at least go back to basics and start again before i look at the electrics
I have already fitted a new coil, condensor and points and timing is at 4mm BTDC.
Hope you can help, sure it is something simple and I cannot see the wood from the trees.

Hi
John
My 1968 Cota had the steel yokes finished in Hammered Silver with the side bolts as shown in Chris's picture.
I believe the alloy yokes came in at the same time the mod to the primary drive cover when they removed the extra flywheel and narrowed the engine.
Thank you for the comments on the Mont, makes it all worthwhile.
Am trying to get it ready for this Sundays Golden Valley trial then Ringwwod evening meet on Thursday.

Hi
Excellent job Greeves.
Got the Cota ready and gave a run at the Bath Classic event last week.
As with all new projects they need running to find the faults.
1 Clutch was like an on off switch so this week I replaced the plates and springs. Item that confused be is that the brass pressure bush is available in two lengths. Can anyone advise why???
2 The carburation was off so would appreciate if any of you guys know the standard jetting, needle and slide for a 21M1824 Mk 2 with a Amal 627 concentric.
Once I get it running the way I want will then strip down and powder coat the frame, respray and seal the tank.
Apart from that it was nice to ride and bring back memories from 1968.

Hi Chris
Your photos are a great help.
I have spent 4 hours today opening the silencer (muffler) and re-fabricating the rear part and tail pipe.
When I opened it up i could have cried!
No wonder it was noisy, all the 3mm holes in the baffle tube were blocked up with carbon!
I suppose 40years takes it's toll!
Anyway all drilled out cleaned up and ready for packing.
Hopefully all the dirty work out the way.
Thank you all, as the photos and info allowed me to scale the fabrications.
Kind regards.

Hi Chris
Photos are a great help.
Do you know the tube diameter at the silencer end of the tapered outlet.
I am about to fabricate the tail pipe.
Kind regards
