Hello gentlemen
On my visit back in May 2003 I met Don Smith on the evening of 1st Scottish Pre65 day at the Clachaig Inn, where I stayed with my father. It was about 7 pm and I had a beer at the pub, during my father Mark (80 years old)had a nap before dinner. Next table to me where 2 gentlemen, one was smoking selfmade cogarettes. I asked him, if he would mind me smoking a ciagar? "Of course not, go ahead!". I asked the two seniors, what the were doing here? "Watching the Pre65!" one guy answered. "Years ago, I competed myself, but I never won".."Oh, you must have been good, then" I answered, " Whats your name?" I asked getting courious. "Don Smith." ??? "You must be joking" "No, no, this is my former competition manager Bill Broker" .. Ok, the guy smoked since 30 min one cigarette after the other, and quickly I found out, that it must be true.
Me and my father talked till midnight and I learned a lot of stories, about Greeves, Montesa and low salaries at that time, etc. So I got to know Don. Next day and on the 6days I met him & Bill several times. Sadly, he passed away 1 year later.
Does anybody have more info / links to a page about Don's career ?
I would like to make a page on our club homepage in Switzerland.
Thanks Patrick

Nice to hear about another M49. Mine was bought by my father and I rode my first regional trial with it at 15 years back in 1979.
I restored everything in 2002, rode one round in Moudon Switzerland behind magical Mick Andrews (what an honour for me...) and since then in France at AFATA trials.
The muffler: Mine is still original, looks small, but without it, there is an ugly sound, not really nice and power delivery does not improve.
I really recommend to ad something.
Another useful item was a leonelli electronic ignition, power + 25%, engine never stoped since, although about 400EUR, well invested money for me.
regards
Patrick from Switzerland

My TL250 still needs some fine tuning. I just got today a new timing advancer (althoug for a XL 350, but it fits) from davidsilverspares.co.uk, great dealer! got this adress from this forum. I am bidding now for a new pointer in ebay.
I got help from a friend, who adjusted my valves. I learned, that you should put under all 4 tappets the 0.05 / 0.08 metal strips at the same time, to make sure for correct settings. Dont check one by one. I also had a loose cam chain, as I tensioned it on the wrong T cycle. Toghether with a rusted advancer, with pitting on the cam and worn springs, might have caused misfirings when closing the throttle, as everything was loose.
I have not tried yet, as I am also fitting a TL 125 exhaust from ebay.
Hope to be ready for a Twinshock AFATA Trial on 15 January in France.
Keep you posted.
Pic is from clubtrial in October: Power is incredible!

Thanks for the Peter Schwarz adress, I already was on his homepage.
I once emailed him for an other Montesa part, but got no answer. Maybe he is not very good at computers.
Do you have other adresses in UK, as English is no problem for me?

Looks really great, but beside the unique look, what are the advantages over the original?

Yesterday, my local dealer brought a new 2006 4 RT to our clubtrial. Looks same, only a black sticker on the back mudguard.
But, on high revs, the sound was deeper and less noisy than my 2005. not much, but still. For me not enough differcence to buy a 2006 silencer.
Does anybody ride a new WES silencer for the 4 RT?
Is it really less noisy, as I want to ride in the city or wood and Swiss Police is quite rigide on noise...
I saw it at www.todotrial.com, but is very expensive there, about 300 EURO, most expensive WES...
Some source in UK ?
Cheers
Patrick

Hy 4 RT riders
I am a happy 4 RT rider since November.
I just heard from my local dealer, that I should be careful and never let the cicker lever snap back, it might cause a nasty hole. A new and stronger stop screw should be fitted in, but needs drainage of oil etc and some hours of work, done by Honda warranty.
Otherwise I m a very happy clubmen rider, like the power delivery of the 4 stroke and the injection. After 6 years on a Cota 315, I don't want to go back to 2 stroke (except for twinshock trials of course...)
So, take care after cicking and ask your local dealer about this problem.
