I am not sure what it tells me but I just measured the movement with a digital vernier and it tells me there is 4 1/2 thou movement at the fly wheel.
Also checked the air cleaner and oil last nite (dry and old) so suspect not the most loved of bikes.
The plan is to keep the bike so I am pretty sure its tear down time
btw Information and comment much appreciated, thanks
Addition- just made the same measurement on my TY and its about 2 1/2 thou

Thanks Wayne, oddly enough I have just been printing the manual out, but useful to know I only need the puller. Do Sherco do a gasket set or will I need to buy them separately ? if separately is it obviouse what I will need ?
Regards, Mike
Apart from riding the thing round the garden I have not been anywhere on it ! hard to believe I trained as an engineer

Was afraid of that, thanks ..... looks like Iwill be riding the TY for a while longer !

Just picked up my shiny 2001, 290 & thought I had better check it over, bottom line is I put a flat 6" bladed screw driver in the 6oc position between the flywheel & the casing and (gently) lifted it & I can detect movement and a gentle "clonk" I would expect a little bit of movement and the bike rode OK (Last bike I had with shot mains vibrated like a b@st@rd) so I am a little unsure if this is normal or I am heading for my first rebuild in many years.
All thoughs greatly appreciated.

I know its not Lancashire (but its all the same to me if its North of the Thames ) but I have got quite a few bits off of this lot and they get the parts into the post ponto, so it might be a useful contact for your mate.

I know its a bit barn door & bolting horses, but I just slapped down a deposit on a 2001 290, seems ok to me though it has a bit of a clutch rattle (gets quieter when you pull the clutch in).
I think I paid a low enough price to allow for a bit of work, but has anybody got any thoughts on whether this is a problem or not & what I should else should I check out when I get it up on the workbench.
Thanks in advance ... Mike

Can't realy talk to the bike as mine is air cooled, but on car engines oil in the coolant is a classic sign of a head gasket problem. Is the heat torqued correctly ? or maybe you have a head gasket problem.

Roughly speaking a 10 degree C rise in a Si devices junction temperature is a halfing of its life (whatever that may be), which is the bad news. The good news is in 5 years of doing that sort of testing I never actually got a failure at device level .... (I have a real job now) so in terms of worring about heat, I wouldn't, failures are usually caused by material migration, corrosion or vibration.
Well anyway, thats my 10 pence worth ....

So who will be the first to drop a 450 motor in one ? should help with getting between sections a little faster ...
-
Can somebody please tell me how to resize pictures ?

Picture of my TY when I colleceted it about a year ago, regretably not quite as nice now !

An advert for Scorpa UK in last weeks comic said call Martin on 01274 566111/566122 or or 07974 932904. The ad talked about selling some ex display bikes plus some new 250's and 175's in a box. Guess this is him ?

It is usually marked on the clutch cover on jap bikes , it's right next to the kick start on my TY (800cc)

To fit the system my mate has (Renham), you have to remove both the ignition & lighting coil along with the points assem, then you bolt the the new assem in. Timing is by setting a mark on the new assem a set distance from a fixing screw. Sloted holes provide adjustment. The coil is replaced also.
Bike runs much smoother is (a bit) more responsive and is less prone to tickover variation as it gets hot (he says).
Hope this helps ...

There is a cure Big John, it's far worse than the condition though ..... DIVORCE ... so you should learn to live it (tough, but I think you will probably manage)
-
The piston was in the wrong way round (true, but I didn't do it) ....

I had some success on the yellow platics of my old PE175 using a combination of wire wool to start with followed by rag and some stuff called faracle, which I think is a course T Cut like paste the motor trade use. Whatever you end up doing I suggest you run a test on an area that is out of sight first.
-
A mate of mine has just fitted one to his 350, it works very well. I think he misses taking it apart every couple of weeks but you can't win them all. Plus the system is not electronic (no black box), it is completely inductive which is kind of neat.

Is that one of the rare Beta "Versprung durch Techos" ?

Import is about Government/EU legislation, that won't be complicated then .....
Contract defines the commercial relationship between two parties. If I had just spent a barrow load of Euros on a new engine design, tooling & assembly line I would be inventing a few Terms & Conditions to try and pay the overdraft !
Must go now, the wife want's her soap box back ...
-
I think as sombody suggested earlier in this thread. Just beacuse one party was asked to take 3X previouse volumes it doesn't mean that the new folks will, their deal may include lower margin/different incentives/longer term contracts/other products/more control by Scorpa FR & a whole bunch of other contractual tricks ....
-
It would appear the rumours were correct, Mr Birkett is going to be flogging a lot of bikes this year ....

I dont have a scorpa but I do have a late model TY, which I guess has the same (or similar) gearbox and it is not that cleaver at getting into gear and does jump out if you don't select properly. Also I spent 20 minutes watching a section a couple of weeks ago and one fella with a scorpa certainly did the most tap dancing trying to select a gear before entering the section. Bottom line is if you make sure the gear is seleceted fully and it jumps out and it is always the same gear you may have a problem, otherwise it probably just a "feature" of Yamaha gearboxes.

Here's my 10p's worth. When I was younger I occasionaly rode my GT250 without a hat, a) because I was stupid & because its nice to feel the wind in your hair.
Now I am (much) older I always wear a hat, a) because I am not quite so stupid now & I have no hair for the wind to blow thru.
My point - until people stop being stupid they need a few rules, the consequence of a rider hurting themselfs because thet are not wearing a hat in organised events effects everybody, so (IMHO) helmets should mandatory in compettion. What adults do alone in the woods is their concern.
As an aside, the area that I practice at once a month is shared with a bunch of people bringing their kids to ride those toy crossers/quads. I have seen the full range from fully kitted up, to bicycle helmets/tracksuits to no helmets/shorts ... madness, if you cant afford the kit for your kids, you shouldn't buy the vehicle ...
I feel better now ...
