Tap straight down is on.(the thumb shaped bit at the bottom) You should see a small R on one side and a C on the other for reserve and closed. stick a small cable tie on the end of the choke lever and then shove the choke lever as far up under the tank as it will go. then use the cable tie to pull it down again once its started as you probably wont be able to get your finger in the gap.
top tip that works a treat with mine is to put it in a high gear (4th or 5th) and rock it backwards and forwards with the clutch in until the back wheel stops skidding and rotates when you push the bike forward(you may need to sit on the bike). then put it back into neutral and fire her up. this both frees off the clutch and primes the carb for an easy start.
be careful sticking it gear the first time you start it as the clutches do drag and you can easily re-arrange your shed with a whole lot of Sherco !
Good luck !!

Hi Adam - you seem to have all of the bases covered, but from my limited experience, these motors are pretty reliable. Others on this forum are more qualified than me to advise on the motor, but maybe have a peek at the gearbox oil if you can - any signs of water (milky colour) is a new water pump. they are not cheap (mine went). also tyres are circa

Thanks Copemech - had a look at the manual. last time i measured TDC was on my old Indian Enfield. I didnt have a guage so improvised with a pencil. when i turned the flywheel the pencil shot up and crushed itself on the underside of the petrol tank leaving bits of wood and pencil lead in the cylinder head - doh wont do that again in a hurry !!
-
I have just ordered one of these flywheel puller see "sherco 290 de-tune " post below.
hope that helps

Thanks Ham2 - will source a puller and have a look another time. I think Wherry's question related to my bike as we rode it yesterday and noticed it had a very hot pipe. I had thought it might need a new piston to get the juices flowing again, but perhaps its the ignition? it was also knocking slightly on the over-run, so it could well be retarded. sorry for the post diversion !
cheers all

Also - do i need a flywheel puller?
-
Thought i'd have a quick look at mine,as it is a little "soft" but could you please tell me whether the nut holding the Ducati flywheel on needs to be torqued back down and if so, do you know the torque setting? Cheers Caddabs

Wife came home from shopping to find my plastics in the sink and using her hairdryer to dry out my airbox. couldnt have looked more guilty if i'd been trying on her heels.

Slight word of warning. i have just noticed mine have split in the same place on both boots. Its in the area that creases over your big toe, just behind the rubber toe protector. starting to open up and crack. i have been rubbing wax into them and hope i have stopped it getting any worse, but may be worth making sure this area is nice and soft.

I run mine on a 33 Pilot and 126 Main at 80:1. (12.5 ml per litre)
Hope you've sorted it

Reminds me of the closing shots from "on any Sunday" - slomo is lovely.
-
I run mine on a 33 pilot. Cant remember the main at the moment.
Good luck !
-
i'm no expert on this at all, but i had a problem with mine which was traced to a perished "o" ring on the idle screw which was letting air in. maybe shove a bit of grease on it, see if that helps.(if it does, then you can replace it) what size jets are you running? maybe a kink in the fuel breather pipe too?
good luck !!

Havnt we got to;
a) make sure that the Legal roads are not closed to off-roaders - ie support the TRF
b)Encourage the illegal oiks to join a club and do it properly? If they dont need to, they wont have to.
Anyway i prefer Kate Hamble !

Interesting post - watched it over lunch. I am not sure i agree with the comments here. There are surely a number of issues;
1. - illegal offroading (2 or 4 wheeled, it doesnt matter)
2. - the future of legal off roading.
I dont support illegal off roading at all, and surely all of us that pay our ACU subs and our club memberships should agree? illegal motorsport gives legal motorsport a bad name and we are all tarred with the same brush. If it carries on, pressure groups will try to shut all motorsport down (legal or otherwise) and we will all suffer. I live close to some forestry land and have been so tempted on occasions to have a blast around, but that would be wrong. when i'm walking my dog through the woods, i dont want to meet a KTM on full chat, so i wouldnt do it, and we should not accept those that do.
The TRF guy has a fair point. His agenda is merely to make sure that the legal byways are kept open, and to promote sensible use. He has no interest at all in legal off roading, his agenda is purely to make sure the countryside isnt closed to off roaders who are prepared to be sensible. Equally the guys with the 4x4's are doing it legally and doing exactly what we do - having fun. they have no axe to grind either.
If there is pressure on legal off roading, trails , motocross, enduro etc. then it isnt the guy from the TRF's job to support us, it should be up to our professional bodies to lobby and make sure that legal off roading is kept that way and not spoilt by irresponsible off roaders.
We should perhaps support the TRF to make sure that the byways are kept open and used sensibly, support the Police to keep illegal off roaders from messing it up for everyone, and through our own actions show that the countryside can be used responsibly and we are not all hooligans.
I couldnt see any bias in the report at all, and perhaps the only omission was not to have a representitive of legal off road sport to comment. but again, the programme wasnt about that.
Just my thoughts - back to the shed now.
Cheers

Welcome aboard Jonny - good luck with the Sherco, i love mine. Cant recommend anywhere to ride up your way, but i can recommend the Ryan Young DVD which i found really helpful. There are others too if you search around the forum. helps you get the bike set up and everything else you need to know (balancing etc) and plenty more that you probably will never get to ( i know i wont).
best of luck !

Wish i'd read this before the weekend Just topped up what was in there with some blue stuff i found in the shed. Fingers crossed On a Sherco - is it the screw at the bottom of the water pump that is the draining point?
-
Just ordered an old Gas Gas one which i am told will fit.
These guys very helpful if anyone else needs one Feet up Trialsport

Thanks Tony - send my best to the Coromandel - will get back there one day!
-
Thanks Corriolis - There appears to be a hanger with bolt holes on the swinging arm on the disc side - my stand is whacking the disc and scoring it and i think a disc guard would act as a rest for the stand. Not sure if the new(er) Sherco ones will fit or whether anything off another bike could be adapted?
Cheers

I dont have any experience of that, but heating anything in a petrol tank sounds extremely dangerous to me. depends on where and how big it is, but why not put an old inner tube in there and pump it up? Easier to get out than half a pound of mixed salt & sweet and no danger of a bigger pop than you anticipate. good luck !
