While assembling the TLR 200 motor, I installed a new D.I.D. cam chain that I got from John at the Classic and Pre 65 TY Shop in the UK. Stock Honda calls for 100 link. This chain is 100 link. Long story short - it was a pretty tight fit. Tight to the point that the tension of the chin caused the rear of the cam to ride up and out of the rear cup a bit. I was able to hold the cam down and assemble the cover, but even with the tensioner at full slack, the chain is pretty snug. I started the bike and noticed a slight knock or slap that appears to come from the lower end. As the RPM's rise, the noise goes away. since I didn't break into the lower end on rebuild, I can't say for certain that the mains are ok. The chain was an endless unit that came with a master link for those wanting to be able to remove the chain without splitting the motor, but I chose to go the full cicuit route. I laid the old chain next to the new one before assembly and noticed a bit of difference, but not enough to fret over. The old one was pretty well tweaked like everything else on the bike. I just wanted to get an opinion before I potentially ruin the motor. Do you think that break in will allow the chain to stretch enough? I fear premature wear on the lobes and rockers, not to mention breakage. I might mention that I installed new chain guides as well. Your thoughts? Thanks. g4321 Posted September 21, 2006 Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 Cant remember chain length but the difference between a 104 and 100 link chain would be obviousle. The new chain will be tight - have you pushed down the chain tensioner to fully slacken it? Its certainly noticable on a 250 and 200 if you fit a thicker base gasket that the chain is very tight whrn first fitted. AS for bottom end try for up and down play on the ignition flywheel - if there is any strip and replace bearings, they are expensove being Honda one off's rather than std sizes .
