vintagecota
Hi MkI, the points gap is 0.4mm or 0.016" the timing is 1.8mm advance. Sorry no photos but you'll need a dial indicator, and a buzz box to hear when the points open. I don't think an Ohmmeter will work, but can't remember why... someone else might know. I don't know what causes the flywheel to shear off, but I know the bike still works fine! There's one around here that is sheared off and running still. In fact the bike is very low miles and looks like brand new. One of the Montesa Guru's recommended tricks is to turn down the flywheel quite a bit to reduce the throttle lag. Personally, I like the weight. I'd rather have a bike that is much harder to stall and takes a millisecond to respond. I can adapt my riding to take that split second into consideration, by slowing down a bit. That's where the flywheel helps too. The flywheel changed at serial number 11307 , the crank may have as well. Incidentally, the local bike with the sheared crank is one of the last 348s made, and so is mine, so I hope the later crank isn't the cause. What number is your broken one? All 348s and 349s should have a 51M prefix on the engine number. I have no idea where the 'h' came from. The hole punched in the case by the kick starter is from a very simple yet common problem. The kicker can typically be felt on the right shin while on a steep climb or splatter. It just sticks up, sort of in the way. It's not really bad, but a lot of people perceive it to be, so.... they install the kicker leaning further forward, out of the way. Unfortunately, at the bottom of the stroke it's turning the shaft further and punching the shaft's forward stop through the thin wall of the stator case. The solution is to install the kicker at the same angle as the head stay, just as the factory did.
