My nephew mainly complained about the weight of it with him only being a scrawny little git

They've gotta be the worst tyre's ever i think his old one has ceen sing tyre's on it.

I've still got it in the garage cos it's such an iconic bike, i used to ride one when i first started out and think they're great, but they can't compete with the modern bikes. :D

That step must've been atleast six foot and nearly vertical! :D

I've always defended the TY80 as the best bike to start on.

Over the past year or two my view has maybe changed.

My lad had the TY80 for a few years, as may of us did. The trouble was, other lads on Beta 50's were flying up stuff where the TY80 would struggle for grip. Partly the wheel size, partly the tyres, partly the very basic suspension, and the weight may play a part too.

I have no doubt that the TY80 can perform well with a good rider on it, but the same rider will probably perform better on a Beta 50.

By the time the rider is getting strong enough to throw a TY80 around, he's big enough to throw a Beta 50 around, and probably a lot more successfully.

It almost pains me to say it, but I think other than getting a young lad used to clutch and gears, there is no advantage to the TY80 these days (other than being half the price).

The Beta 50 has just about filled the gap that has existed for years. There was no reliable replacement for the TY80 for ages, but now there is.

I think what would benefit trials as a whole is if a manufacturer could produce something like the Beta 50 year after year with very little development costs and keep bringing the price down and down. These first time bikes need to be more affordable to drag people in to the sport.

That's what i was worried about,it could make trial's very expensive for some of the more younger one's to get into.I used to be breaking plastic's on the bike every week when i was young, I would'nt like to hazard a guess on how much it would cost to replace the plastic's on the more modern smaller bike's.It would be sad to see kid's walking away from trial's because of the money involved to keep going.

Gaz

Is the beta 50 the only choice? What about the Sherco and Gas Gas, are they auto at all?

I think the Sherco is only two gears. I'm not up to date on the Gassers, but from what I remember the Gasgas boy is the same - 2 gears. The rookie apparently used to be full 6 gears, but I've just not seen many around. One I did see at an AMCA trial where the frame snapped and separated frame from forks put me off them at the time I was buying my lads.

Looking at the GasGas UK site, the rookie is not listed under 2007 machines, so not sure what's happening there.

Might be just my perception locally, but the path round here seems to be Beta 50, Beta 80, then when you get to 125 you've got the choice, and most seem to go Gasser or Sherco.
