Aprilia Climber 280 Timing/starting Issues

Hello, I am new here my name is Matt

I just bought a 1992 Aprillia Climber 280R from a friend. The bike has a problem where sometimes it will take a lot of kicks to start then other times it will start on the second kick and when it does start the revs don't climb, it seems like the timing is not advancing.

My friend said the bike started to get harder and harder to start by I mean you would have to kick it for longer and longer before it would start. Also the bike has a non stock CDI unit installed on it. He wired this up when the original failed but the bike ran with this CDI for a long time before this problem so I don't think that is the problem but I have order a used CDI from a guy in England.

I did some searches and read about the key on the flywheel sheering off and messing up the timing. I have taken the nut for the flywheel off but I can't get the flywheel off. I can see what I think is the key and the flywheel seems very tight! is there a trick to getting the flywheel off? or do I need some special $1000 Aprilia flywheel puller?

My buddy who owned the bike seems to really think it's the Stator is there anyway to check the stator? or do I just have it rewound?

Any tips and help would be greatly appreciated

Matt

Sorry I cant be of any DIRECT help, but you may want to speak to a guy called Peter Knight in Bath?..UK

He calls himself the Rotax man, and is very helpfull, he can also supply parts for the Aprilia engines. I bought an engine manual for my 1993 Climber from him.

I will try to find his phone number for you later, but you could probably find it from just doing a search on google....try searching for Peter Knight powersports.

Dont try to over analyse a problem straight away. Start with basics - Have you tried thoroughly cleaning, servicing and blowing out your your carb?? Any muck or water or build up of old gunge at all especially in your pilot jet will make bike run like crap!!! Check for any dirt / excessive wear / missing/broken parts / float height and condition etc... It should all be as clean and serviceable as a surgical tool!! Have you replaced the spark plug / ht lead or plug cap??

Good luck mate - you never know - a lot cheaper starting point than timing and removing flywheel issues.

Hey Matt

Nice bike <_<

This bikes issues started with Me and I sold it off for someone else to figure it out....Matt is the second person to give it a try...in less than a month.

What was happening is the spark was intermittent. Upon starting the bike cold it would fire the quit then fire like a old hit and miss motor until things warmed up some....then was fine till you shut it off walked away for a few minutes then would be difficult to start again...unless you put a new plug in. My guess was that the voltage at the plug was low if not erratic.

Either the CDI/coil had issues or the hot lead wire from stator was breaking down or the stator was doing the same.

Try the replacement CDI your getting Matt then back track from there if these issues fail to disappear.

Have a contact for stator re-wind through Parker Bros.

Carb is clean and the fuel is reaching the plug.

As for the CDI/Coil in it now....it's from a '83CR80 (did not have it running with this set up) so the ignition curve may not be right....hence why it does not rev. Try the new one your getting...it will plug right in with the current wiring set-up....it's not butchered

When you get it running then get your butt here for some indoor trials...is all set up....and the New Sherco 2.9...one word... AWESOME <_<

Thanks for the extra info richard!

when the new used CDI i order comes I will try that.

I took the stator into a fellow I trust who said he would check it out but wasn't 100% sure the guy he had could rewire it.

if the new CDI does not fix I might be looking to get a good rewinding done if you know someone who knows how to do it properly.

I will be down their as soon as it fires for some indoor trials! can't wait!

Oh that sherco is beautiful! espcially the triple clamps!
