tlr 125'ish

Hi my tlr 125 is a bit sick after having a big bore about three years ago. To be exact it has bent the con rod and has shattered the bottom of the cylinder sending lumps into the gearbox so is now ******. I am looking to completely replace the engine and as my bike is virtually a tlr 200 I am looking for a tlr engine or rs 200 or tlr 250 or pretty much any motor that will fit ( I even tried a mates cb 250rs engine in there but was an inch to long) if any help can be given please do as I am pretty desperate to get back out riding again.

Here's a pretty good article on building up a 200 motor,if you can't find a complete motor.

www-staff.lboro.ac.uk/~elvpc/bikes.html?http://www-staff.lboro.ac.uk/~elvpc/papers/XR200.html

Trials geared honda motors are probably quite hard to come by ,and if you do they are quite expensive.

Hi,

try Lifan engines as they do a 200 Honda engine copy. that unit also has a carb with an accellerator pump which eliminates the off idle stall that can be a problem on the 200 engines, these units have been retailing for around the 750$ nz mark recently.

Good luck.

Phil

Honda Xl engines should fit straight on - similar gearing to the trils models as well. Also, they look a bit more period for a TL - I think TLR engine would look a bit too modern! XL's are fairly cheap at the moment, but most have been thrashed through their life, so you may need a few to make a complete decent engine.

I run a 200 Jailing motor in a climber frame adapted to suit a tl125 motor... whilst the mountings are similar, they're not exactly the same and the 200 is taller and puts the carb in a slightly different position.... incidentally, the first motor i tried was a kymco 125 motor and the mountings and offsets (brackets & sprocket) were different (enough to require significant cut & weld) to the honda even though outwardly they look very similar. The engine fins on the 200 are much bigger too which necessitated a bit of trimming whereas the original honda engine just dropped straight in....

We also run a 125 twin shock with a cb125rs (OHC) motor which although is difficult to get the gearing anywhere near, it revs much harder than the tl yet is just as smooth at the bottom end.

Andy.

I think the main differences between the stock tlr200 motor and other honda 4 stroke 200 and lifan motors is that the tlr has smaller valves/carb, much heavier rotor, and lower gearing.

I,m interested to know if there is another motor that shares the same head with the smaller valves and different cam; as i may have to replace mine soon and tlr heads are hard to come by and probably very expensive from a Honda dealer.

Has anyone run say a xr/xl motor with the bigger valves in a tlr? I know it gets more hp, but is it still ok to do trials with? Does it stall easier at low speeds and/or lose traction and torque?

have a Honda special my dad built with a stock XL 125 in it. Runs like a dream, with the sprockets all sorted (through trial and error!) it runs great - but more like a pre -65 than a twinshock. has great amounts of low down torque and still enough at the top end to be good between the sections! can't remember what the gearing is, but is pretty low!
