I'm New - Help Please

I'm looking to get into trials riding and need as much advice as you can offer e.g. bikes, essentials, bike rack, clubs to join(live in Brighton, Sussex) - basically all considerations I should make about getting into the sport. I did a little uncompetitive trialing when I was 12 (now 30) and living in Yorkshire but since i've only riden road bikes (and still do). I'm really looking forward to getting into it again but could use your help.

Hi, It depends what bike your into classic or modern? If your into modern stuff i'd go for a 200 or a 250 at the most to start with? beta 200/250 or scorpa are two good models that are good starter bikes, Stay away from the larger bikes ie 270/290cc as these really are for more experianced riders/ experts!

buy a copy of trials and motorcross news and take a look at the regs find a club local to you and enter the novice /easy route! as for bike transport i'd always go for a van to transport the bike about mostly for security reasons! but if you go for a trailer go for a purpose built one! forget homemade types there nearly always a waste of time/money! hope this helps? :rotfl:

I agree with Scotty having gone the 290 route. Unless you have exceptional clutch/throttle control the big stuff is a hindrance, even if you are a lard ar$e a 200 or 250 is pleanty. As for transport whatever gets you and the bike to the trial works for me.

Recommend you get yourself to a few trials, talk to people & you may even get a ride on a bike or two.

I started a year ago this coming Saturday. I bought an older Sherco and then a club members Gas Gas 300 and recently a Gas Gas 280.

If I had the money I'd have a new 250. It seems the less power the better starting out. I'm heavy enough that a 200cc might be pushing my luck though.

The boots that I bought seem to do more for my riding than the helmet I bought when starting out. The boots provide more feel on the bike. The full face helmet that I had really didn't obstruct my view as much as I thought it would.

I lowered the countershaft sprocket one tooth and went with a slow throttle. These things slowed the bike down enough to help out with my slow response.

I'm sort of old school and like crawler, low end, torquey type of power more than the rocket launching lift-off that most bikes have. Maybe in a year or two I'll have a different opinion though. :rotfl:

there are a lots of ACU clubs slightly further afield, depends on how far you want to travel, but there is normally something on every weekend in Kent, Sussex and Surrey

I've ridden a Brighton group trial at Iden, and it was great fun (even if i cam spectacularly last!)
