Does anyone have any recommendations for the amount of fork oil I should be using in my 290? And what weight oil? Iv just got the bike and I'm giving it a once over with fresh grease and oil, about 300ml came from each fork leg. I got some PJ1 extra light fork tuner (5 HVA or something like that if it means anything to anyone???) from the seller of the bike, will this be ok?

Also the the bottom bush on my shock has loads of play, but I cant find the part number in the sherco manual (downloaded from MRS). Is it the same as the upper bush, as there is a repair kit for this?

300ml(cc) each leg should be fine on a drain and fill.

Have not used the PJ1, and I am not exactly sure about their ratings, but if it says 5wt fork oil, it should be fine as well. It should be pretty much "water" thin in consistancy. I understand some heavier riders prefer 10wt, or a blend!

Are you sure the lower shock bolt is not just loose? I do not recall lower bushings being available, only upper! You jave to drop the top bold to get things to move to where you can ck the lower as I recall.

The new shock from TRP/ Jitsie is supposed to be a good one. :thumbup:

HVI, Stands for High Viscosity Index. It is a rating of the oils ability to maintain viscosity, or it's durability. The better the polymers the better the rating. I believe when the rating was made a 100 viscosity index was thought to be the best. Most good suspension fluids are now 400 or over hence the "High" viscosity index.

As far as what weight, the lightest weight oil you can use is usually best. If the fork action feels to fast, go one weight higher.

I took the shock off and the top bush it a good snug fit. the bottom was quite loose (even when tightened up!). After looking at the delta link it looks like it was damaged/weld repaired!!!

I saw the TRP shock... couldnt find a price or dealer tho. Would it worth the investment or just new bushes?

Lewisport carries them here in the states. I think he can arrange to anywhere but you must call or e-mail!

Surely there is a Jitsie dealer in the UK if that is where you are.

Other than that, an adjustable shocker with proper spring rates of your choosing does have its advantages!

I do not know who can repair either the Olle or the Sachs shocks. Does anyone else? :thumbup:

ps- what year is the bike, as I have a good delta link off an '03, I think they changed them in '04 slightly.

Thanks copemech. the bike is an '04. So il do a lil' research see if that link might fit...... also cost of delivery from the states. Im also gettin a machinist to have a look see if he can make a bush and delta link up.

What year is the 290? Sherco USA tech support told me 385cc in the left fork leg, and 370 in the right for the '06 2.9 with the adjustable front forks. I'm running the PJ1 5wt in mine and it feels pretty plush, but then again, I ride in the career beginner class, so I don't hop the front.

On my 02 290 I had a delta made up by a fabricator. Found the (rose joint) bushes at a bearing suppliers and had the bush inserts made by the fabricator too.

The end resut was far tougher than what Sherco do.

That's why I bothered :thumbup:

Gaz,

The '04 has the later delta link, so you might as well just call MRS for one, or your local dealer. I only replaced mine as an update, but ! seem to recall it was only about $60, or L30 at the time. Probably not worth the postage on the older one even if I gave it to you.

They may have the lower shock bushings, or a fix! I cannot recall which shock was on the '04, so you would probably need to know.

Clark, the forks prior to '06 are different, 300cc ea. on a drain and fill, 330cc on a dry rebuild!

But the end result was definitely tougher. And had zero maintenance after that.

Gaz, my memory is good, yet short! But it helps to have owned at least a half dozen Sherco's over the years, as well as listened and learned from others here and elsewhere that I could not begin to list!

The RYP website has a wealth of helpful information as well as the Sherco site.

Add to that the fact that even after a lifetime of working on things, I occasionally still get "tinkeritis"

which is defined as the uncontrollable urge to improve, modify, repair or destroy something! So in many cases I have learned the hard way, but I am also old and wise enough to learn from others mistakes!

I take no credit for the latter! :thumbup:

was quite lucky really neo. the macinist guy at the factory where i work loves motorbikes and offered to do it for nowt!!!! the guiness is my gesture of goodwill :thumbup:
