joandemma
Anyone got any tips on how to make long muddy climbs, these seem to let me down in trials. I see other people getting up them with no bother. Edited March 16, 2007 by joandemma
titanium
Its all about the body positioning. Keep your toes up, this will help keep your weight back. Try to get as much momentum and drive at base of the climb as the section allows, using the tallest gear the bike will pull.
fellonmelug
Try going back to the section you are having difficulty with after you are finished and ask the obserever if you can have a few practice rides, try different techniques and gears until you get it right
coxy
slap bike in third or fourth gear if youve got a long run up or 2nd with short run up give it loads of revs and slip the clutch to get the drive and then dont shut off at all just use your clutch to keep bike under control and lean back
north_yorkshire_lad
I have a 125 so i could be wrong on other bikes but i rev the balls of the bike at the bottom of the climb and near the top shut off and let you momentum carry you up, this allows you to stop after the crest of the hillin case vof turns etc.
motojojo
3rd gear alot of motor, half clutch and squat down into the bike to lower your center of gravity. If that don't work buy a 4rt. LOL
lewis_gasgas
slap bike in third or fourth gear if youve got a long run up or 2nd with short run up give it loads of revs and slip the clutch to get the drive and then dont shut off at all just use your clutch to keep bike under control and lean back Wouldnt of really said you want to be leaning back that much not on steep hills either just get into the bike so your weight is low into the bike. pete
I was struggling on something like this last year, Tim Connor was watching and said 'Try squatting into the tank of the bike and put as much pressure as you can onto the pegs.' I tried - it worked and turned a 5 into a clean!! So 3rd, maybe 2nd gear if it's not too long a climb, plenty of gas with the clutch slipping a bit, then release clutch, hang on tight and squat into the tank!! If there is any flat dry ground at the bottom of the hill, use it to get as much momentum as you can - makes it less hard work when you actually get onto the hill! Hope this helps! Pete. gasserrobinson
I always get up anything in 1st gear on my gassa 07 125. so i dont know what your on about keep your weight back over the wheel and get grip at the bottom and then keep the momentum on all the way up. NO REVVING HALF WAY UP because you will lose all of your grip
bilco
keep your weight back over the wheel You can't have any long steep climb's with tree stump's and rock's sticking up waiting to have you off where you are
movingtarget
For longer climbs I go into 5th gear, lots of revs and let the clutch out slowly. For shorter steeper climbs 4th gear, being carefull not to wheelspin and keeping my weight back, but coming forward again at the top letting my momentum carry me. I'm no expert though, never rode at an event just. Its about time I did though.

lewis_gasgas
I know yeah , i know on the gassers that 5th and 6th are completely different gears and only use them on the road really because they cant keep the power im sure 5th would die on a hill... ? scorpa3
So to summarise the advice on gear selection...... Use either 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th for big climbs and you'll sail up every time.

I also find neutral is quite good for really big hill climbs
