andy m Posted March 18, 2007 Report Share Posted March 18, 2007 Slightly off subject, I thought NZ was the place to go, where they were crying out for tradesmen etc. Many can't get from here fast enough??? On the TLR subject I think some people get on with them and some do not. They fetch strong money here now. I think pistons were running out but a batch has been made recently and there are a couple of dealers are helping to keep them going supplying tank/seat units etc and other bits. Generally a good bike if you can get on with it. If not get the gas ouy change steering head, lower pegs and fit extra base gaskets to soften power. I bought one in 1991 (they are very rare here in the US) and have been quite pleased with it's performance and reliability. I like riding thumpers.............. I used it as my modern bike in competition from 191 thru 1995. Advanced thru novice into intermediate class on it, and had great fun placing ahead of the fellows riding the latest watercooled monoshockers from the likes of Fantic, Beta, Gas-Gas, Yamaha or Aprilia. I then switched over to riding it in vintage competiton in 1999 when the local trials series made it a legal bike to compete on. I've trialed the heck out of that bike and it's never let me down in any way. I get my spares from Appleyards there in the UK. Truthfully I've needed almost nothing in the past 15 years. I do know that lots of parts have been discontinued though. Four years ago I picked up a 1981 SWM TL320 and it is quite a good bike in its own right, and while it is close to the Honda in performance I still give the Honda the nod. Beautiful scenery doesn't pay the bills and tradesmen, though encouraged to come over, find their skills are not recognised and therefore have to work for peanuts until the can sit several years worth of kiwi exams.
