Swinging Arm Damage

My sprocket bolts came loose today. I lost three and didnt notice any problem until the sprocket came off the hub. Without noticing any increased drag or any noise the loosened bolts had gouged a channel out of the inside of the swinging arm. They had almost worn right through before I realised.

Obviously this highlights the need to check these bolts regularly and make sure they stay tight. A loose bolt can clearly cause a lot of damage very quickly.

I was wondering; has anyone had to replace a swinging arm on an SY 250 and if so how much did the replacement cost? Am I going to need a second mortgage?

Its always best to locktite sprocket bolts. Sometimes I have noticed that the thread of the bolt does not come through the plastic locking ring in the nut so not giving adequate security. I would think a second mortgage will be needed for your swinging arm replacement  . Best to get a professional welder to look at it first. It should weld without a problem.

The main cause of this problem is due to the rather poor quality of the countersunk screws - the 45' seat angle is (how do I put this politely?) errr poor. Take them out and replace them with decent quality (Holo-Krome) steel items or stainless if you fancy. Before you bin the old ones, compare the angle with the new ones and try seating them into the countersinks on the sprocket - you'll soon see why they come loose!

I have a friend who did the same thing to his SY250. He just left the damage and rode the bike. The groove was about 3/16" deep. I don't know how much a new swing arm costs. I think you could take it to a weld shop and have them weld up the damage with TIG or even MIG with a reel gun. The 02 SY250 has a welded swing arm drop out.

Good luck

Thanks guys. I managed to get the swinging arm welded up locally and am very happy with the results. Also as suggested will replace the bolts with decent stainless ones and loctite the nuts.

Cheers.
