Frame Painting Advise Needed

Just started to spray the frame on my bultaco 199a, but not to sure on how to go about it! its already been sprayed in GOOD quality primer and ive rubbed it down with fine wet + dry! ive got the paint (holts spray cans in the correct colour) im planning on starting this when it gets hotter so to get a good gloss finsh to it BUT! do i spray a coat on let it dry then rub it down slightly then keep going like this? then finish weve a final top coat?

how many coats should i apply?

The final finish will only be as good as the preperation Scotty. Have a good look at your primed and sanded finish and imagine it glossy cos that is all that will happen when you put on the topcoat. It will just highlight the primer with very little 'fill'.

1st move for cellulose cans is as you pointed out , it must be warm , if not the paint will 'bloom' ie go cloudy and look bloody awful. One trick is to put the cans that you are going to use into a bucket of hot water to warm up the cans and paint until you are ready to use them.

BE PATIENT !!! Put your 1st coat on reasonably dry (a speckle coat i call it) and let it flash off(this will give the topcoat a key). No need to sand it down but then then apply another wetter coat. Leave for 15 mins ish between coats (depends on how wet you put the last coat and really until tacky) and then apply again.

I reckon after your speckle coat coat 2-3 good full coats should do it. The last coat is the finishing coat so will requirea little more but dont get too carried away as you can soon ruin the whole job with a load of runs in the last coat!! Bear in mind that to awkward to paint places tend to be the same places that you will get your runs.(from brackets and lugs etc)

Hi,if the spray can has a standard nozzle I would try and fit the type that comes with the larger cans that are supplied with car body panel spray cans,these will give a fan spray effect and if you spray the paint down the tubes with fan going down not across then you will get more paint on the frame and not in the air.You can apply as many coats as you like if the last looks good then the next should to,let coats touch dry in between, if any get a bit rough just flatten back with the wet and dry and apply more.Try to keep the paint looking wet as you spray and do long strokes from top to bottom of each tube section.If you spray when its too hot like 25dgc then you will find it hard to get a good finish anything as low as 10dgc on a dry day should be fine.

Thanks for the replys! Im doing the frame in spray cans as my local powdercoater couldn't match me the proper shade of blue!

also i think it makes the bike look a lot more original as you can spot powdercoat jobs a mile away! :(

mmmmm! I should have wet+dryed it down a bit more as has been mentioned what you start with is what you'll finish weve! if i flat it back with wet and dry should this be used with water? the w+d is 600 grade!

Not mine you wouldnt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

600 will be ok but no coarser though for cans, best to use with warm soapy water as the primer is less likely to pick up and you are less likely to put scrathes in the primer with the edges of the paper!
