Try on all helmets and buy the one that fits you the best. Make sure when your head is bent slightly down you can see under the peak

Personally i need a helmet with a removeable washable liner and i like the seat belt type fasteners other than that make sure its a good fit a large in say a Hebo may be equivelent to a medium Shoei.

I agree with Nigel,

go for a helmet that fits your head well, has a removable liner, has air vents, preferably a stainless steel buckle and strap rivets (hard to find but Shoei used to do one at a price), and is light weight. Usually a carbon fibre one from Hebo weighs approx 950 grams, polycarbonate helmets are approx 1150 grams.

With a helmet, you never want to compromise quality, for price. I have come across the Shiro brand (made in Spain) and find it to be a great balance between price and quality.

Don't know the distributor, or price in the UK, but you can pick one of in the US for $162.

This is probably a silly question but do helmets have a 'use by date'?

I bought a carbon Hebo, which is a great helmet but its probably 5 years old and has had at least two pretty hefty knocks to it...

Yikes! Toss that helmet now!

Helmets are actually single-use items. If they've taken a hard hit, they are done. You can't see the damage that has been done, but that doesn't mean it's not there and you're riding around with a false sense of security.

And, yes, the styrofoam gets old and loses its protective value.

Here's a site on helmets with good info. It's for bicycles, but the information translates directly to us: http://www.helmets.org/replace.htm

Here's some good info from Snell: http://www.smf.org/faqs.html

And from HJC: http://www.hjchelmets.com/helmet_usage.htm

Everyone agrees...your helmet is toast. Replace it before your next ride.

I'm interested in one of these but I don't have the luxury of trying one of the Shiros on for size since noone close carries them. Do they run large/small? What is your hat size (or head circumference) compared to the Shiro helmet size that you ended up with (s/m/l etc.)?

Thanks,

J.
