recently bought a lovely 250 pinky, runs like a dream but now winter coming thought it could do with a little cosmetic attention. i want to respray the tank

but heard that this isnt possible due to the paint bubbleing? is this true and are they any ways round this?

also anyone had any experience of bead blasting the cylinder head? any problems associated with this?

any help appreciated!

Lots of difficulty painting (thermo)plastic tanks all associated with petrol leaching out through the walls of the tank and taking paint off. I have researced this for my Fantic 240 tank and there is a guy in france who has a solution I think using an epoxy resin to first seal it before painting in a RAL finish whatever that is. I don't have the details to hand but I'll have another look for it. There is also the possibility of searching for specialist plastic finishers who may be able to advise and a couple of mates have suggested that these people use a dye rather than a paint.

As for blasting the cylinder head, just ensure that a specialist who knows his stuff does it rather than someone used to blastic garden furniture etc as some methods or wrong size grit will take off too much parent metal and 'pit' the surface. You are looking for the least aggressive procedure possible ie vapour.

Found the advice on the fantic site copied below if it makes any sense to you...........

TANK

-The 240'petrol tank is in "thermo-plastic". This materiel can't generaly be painted. A friend's got a solution for a very good result.

Cyrille's solution

1)Sandpaper n

If you want to have the head bead blasted to remove the old paint, I would recommend using caustic soda as a cheap and effective alternative.

You use 1 kG of caustic soda to 4 ltrs of clean water and stand well back, as the fumes aren't nice to breath in. You will need a pair of good rubber gloves and another container of clean water to transfer into, (a dustbin is good)

I stripped my head and barrel this way and it works a treat, without damaging either.

If you try this dont leave it in the caustic to long, you might find you dont have a cylinder head anymore.
