axulsuv Posted December 9, 2007 Report Share Posted December 9, 2007 Hi all , I just bought a ty 80 home to fix up so my boys can ride good old twinshock events w/ me . a few stupid ?'s that I don't know the answer to , as when the ty80 's came out I already had a tl125 and never rode one until a few moments ago !!!!!!!!!!!!! The frame and engine #s match 451-002195 , Can any one tell me what year this is , 80a , 80b etc ? And the real stupid ? .... are they only four speeds w/ neutral at the bottom , or do I need to split the cases and check it out for bent shift forks etc. ? Thanks for any and all responses ... kevin j Posted December 10, 2007 Report Share Posted December 10, 2007 TY had 4 speed. N at bottom so easy to find for little kids. Later GT or MX80's had 5 speed. When my kids were younger, I looked at converting because of the big jump between first and second (I am thinking like 30% or more) but it turns out that 5th just adds to the top. And the ratios between 1-2 and 2-3 were similar so I couldn't just sprocket down and run 2-3. There is a plastic spacer in there in the TY, or was it the MX..... On the 5 speeds they just delete the spacer and put a gear in its place. Strange, would think for the few dollars they would have all been the same, but.... So I abandoned the changes, k\moved the kids up later on. manyyears back. tirs are hard to find. 14 rear, 16 front, many choices but all were narrower and not trials pattern. Only ones I knew of 5 years ago were Cheng Shin (sp?). Hard as nails, but they fit between the forks, swing arm, etc. good little bike. AtomAnT,I can remember a Fantic six speed normal road looking bike back in 74,you always knew when one was coming because of the number of gear changes.If I can regain any street cred the next bike I had was a YDS7. You chaps and your across the pond bikes I've never heard of or seen ! I had a tweeked RD250chassis w/abunch of tz parts on it I got from some guys at a daytona speedweek way back when ...I had it right about the time the kawi 900 first hit the scene , made abit of cash stoplight to stoplight .... Well back to the ty80 ! it's a very early 74 model A ....acording to yamaha , and right now I 'm heading out to use my neighbors tig welder and make some real footpegs for the little monster !!!! And I've got some tire's and tubes and cables on the way , and and and and and all the othe litttle bits to make it RIght .. A virgin 1974 yamaha factory service manual... Still in the yamaha logo'd ziploc bag , witha owners manual and warrenty registration booklet !!! Not a mark or blemish on a page of any of the three ! not even any creases from being read ... Sometimes Ebay is a wonderful place ... All for less than a new haynes manual ! I don't think the gent new what he had when he agreed to end the auction early . Shouldv'e fetched alot more than the 35.00usd. I paid for it !!! Now to work on the bike ! And I got some trials tires on the way too ... MERRY Christmas to all and to all a goodnight ... Glenn The current photo's are to big to upload so I'll take some more BEFORE shots asap...
