2shock
Hello Just got a lateish TY175 for a bit of 'lost youth' type fun but has the following problem. It starts runs and rides great for about 20mins then cuts out and won't start again until cold and does the whole routine again!! Should i lash out on an eletronic ignition conversion and solve this and possibly future problems, or is itlikley to be mush simpler - eg new condenser or coil??? Thanks

tony283
I would first look at the carb and make sure all the jets are blown through, then check the fuel level cut off and make sure it is not sticking and causing minor fuel starvation. If all is good fuel wise then it must be in the ignition system and will be cheap to rectify. Plug NGK BE9ES or a BE7ES will do, set to 22 thou. Points, some of the new OEM ones come with a grayish teflon like covering on the faces and this MUST be filed off before use, set the gap at 15 thou. If you have the flywheel off then you may as well fit a new condenser. Now check the wiring and see if the loom is HARD anywhere. If it is hard then the ign (black wire) outer covering could be melting and then shorting. Check the kill switch wiring and disconnect up by the coil while you are testing. Finally check the coil and see if there are any signs of the lead having been touching the exhaust. good luck Tony
andy.t
2shock,I had the same problem with my TY175 and found it was the HT coil breaking down when it got hot, picked up a new one from Trail & Trials UK for
2shock
Cheers for all the help and advice, but have gone down the route of ordering an eletronic ignition kit and eliminating any condenser, coil, points bit of naff wire etc,etc problems in the future at the same time. I'm also told that if you look at the kicstart hard enough it will fire up when fitted - but we'll see!!
