madmostin
hi there. whilst inspecting my friends beta 270 04 i noticed the kickstart had worked loose. closer inspection revealed the steel kick start pivot had cracked around the washer. ive since welded it back up but i believe it will fail again due to the wear on the kickstart spline, my question is can the kick start spline be replaced without splitting the motor. i could buy a new kick start but i think that will just mask the problem. paul w
yes i think you can, the attatched link is from the importers site, it shows that you will have to remove the outer case only. if you call the importer and ask the question they will be more than helpfull with advice, and they will dispatch the advised parts as well ! in the mean time check this link (page 12 of the file) cheers paul http://www.betatrialuk.com/images/stories/...0-270engine.pdf
dan williams
I've found after a number of years I've had to cut the opening on the end of the kickstart lever out a bit to get good dig on the splined shaft. Once I did that it stopped loosening up. A couple swipes with a hacksaw do the trick.
madmostin
Thanks for link to diagram. Dont understand the bit with the hacksaw? The spline is not visibly bad but it would be nice to make it right. Doesn't seem like the best design. is it still used on current models? Gasgas is much better even though i snapped kick start. ham2
Thanks for link to diagram. Dont understand the bit with the hacksaw? I'll answer for dan as I guess he's asleep at the moment in the U S A. The female-spline part of the kick-start lever has a slot through it so when you tighten the bolt it clamps around the spline-shaft. File or hacksaw this slot so it's a little bit wider and you should get more clamping force when you tighten the bolt. I can't remember which bike I did this on but it has worked for me in the past Edited January 6, 2008 by HAM2
arun1664
The beta female spline does not clamp to the male spline, suspect Ham is talking about the arrangement on his sherco & assuming it applies to the Beta also. The kickstart on my 2002 Rev 3 is a bit loose but works fine. Suggest you get the washer welded back on, keep an eye on it and just carry on. I had the same problem and ended up getting a new kickstart which is the one that is a bit loose now! Regards, Mike
