I had to brush up on my history knowledge on this but basically, for most of recorded history, man thought that the Earth was the centre of the universe. This theory was called the Geocentric Theory. Anyone who challenged it was put to death for their heretical beliefs. Religion and mythology were also factors of course. A proportion of the French to this day held this belief even though science proved otherwise.
