pedronicman
Hi , i am halfway through re-packing the mid box and seperate silencer on my TL 320 . Have cut open the mid box and de-coked it ,re-packed it and am going to weld it up -ok. I have now cut open the back of the rear silencer (the side that usually rubs on tyre) to find that inside it only has baffle plates and no core or packing- Can anyone please tell me if this is correct and should it have cores/packing and has anyone re-packed theirs? Thanks

martinm
Hi Looking at the back of your tail pipe. The front triangular section contains a baffle tube and packing. The larger square main section contains 2 baffle plates, one with a hole in the top the other with a hole in the bottom. These are pop rivetted in, and have a habit of breaking loose. If you shake your tailpipe and it rattles....open heart surgery will be required in this area, if not leave well alone. I have found that running a hot air gun through the tailpipe for 15 minutes (in a well ventilated area) will de coke it better than cutting and rewelding as there is a negligable amount of packing in the pipe. Good luck Martin
t-shock 250
Do yourself a favour & ditch the original tailpipe for an alloy one (anything that can be made to fit) It does nothing except choke the breathing of the engine and add considerable weight to the rear of the bike. malcra
I've tried alternative rear boxes (a Wes pipe from a gas-gas i had) and it wasn't any good. As Martin says, the baffle plates in the rear box can break off; I had one on the Guanaco I restored to exactly that. It did rattle and only with lack of power etc did I notice (more here). I did surgery on a couple of exhausts and I feel that with assistance of a better welder than I am that I got a really good finish. I also repacked the mid box on the Jumbo with the (cheaper) sheet packing from BVM. The loose stuff would probably be better Also, used some black barbeque paint from B&Q; better finish that the PJ1 engine paint, and has slightly better petrol resistance. pedronicman
Thanks for the advice guys, I have now repacked the mid box which is getting welded up tomorrow. It is in very good condition .Then it needs re-painting - i will try the barbecue paint route! As for the silencer box i am going to stick with the original . It needed a major decoke and burn/clean out but is as good as i will get it. This is getting welded up along with the mid box . I won't bother going down the route of trying a different silencer- I am trying to keep the bike as original as possible -that's how i like it and that's how it should be in my opinion-- no ' i'm not an anorak either!.
