To Use Octane Boost Or Not?

I've recently picked up a 2000 Beta 250. I've been out once with friends and the bike seemed spot on (99ron fuel mixed 75:1 fully synth).

One of my mates who's been riding quite some times says that for a 2000 everything seems remarkably good, however he also reckons I should be using octane booster in my fuel, even if it is super-unleaded.

I've done a search and can't find anything conclusive so would like to know if it's 'the higher octane the better' or not, or if it depends on how/what I'm using the bike for.

If people are using octane booster what sort mix of petrol/boost/oil are they using.

On the other hand it may all be needless and one of those 'my mate says' things.

Hi,

Most people I know just use a good fuel like shell optimax or BP Ultimate.

If the carb and spark plug are right then the bike should run fine on this, unless the engine is coked up in which case changing fuel will not improve much untill it has been cleaned out or run at WOT to clear it out  . I would stick with just using good fuel unless you find the knocking to be a major annoyance. Most pre-ignition knocks can be sorted by adjusting the carb or timing.

Ok thanks guys, I'll just use Optimax or the Tesco 99ron.

I've got no running problems at all, no knocking or pre-ignition, just a mate advised it, but the poor chap does have a Sherco (just joking).

That was the answer I expected and wanted, saves wasting money on booster, thanks again.

I would avoid octane booster all together, i used to race boat engines and tried all sorts of performance boosters, actually melted a con rod on to crank journal by over use of octane booster.

I know of many ways to blend fuel for better performance but all have draw backs, best to stick to high grade pump fuel and fully synth oils, otherwise you shorten life of engine, if you need more go get a bigger one .
