Wheel Rebuilding

Hi all I am thinking about having the front wheel rebuilt on my Majesty, and was wondering if I fitted a conical hub could I still use the Yamaha rim which origionally had a full width hub or would I have to buy a new rim. Thanks. (please dont reply if you are going to say that this is against the spirit of twinshock trials, as I have numerous pictures of Mick Andrews and Shirty etc on bikes with conical hubs and leading axle forks back in the day. You know who you are)

It all depends on whether the spoke holes in the Yam rim are at the correct angle for the conical hub, you may be lucky and they are, but I guess only the wheel builder can tell you that.

Are you going for the conical hub for appearance or for a better brake. If the former I'm assuming you already have the hub.

If it's for a better brake, see if you can find a complete Grimeca front wheel assembly as fitted to Fantic/Beta/Garelli/Armstrong twinshocks as generally they are a pretty good brake and they're conical. My Majesty front brake is tragic. You'll just need to have a fiddle with the spindle fitting as it is a larger diameter than the Yam one.

Thanks for your reply woody, Yes Im trying to improve the braking as Ive just picked up Fantic hub, brake plate and wheel spindle and also a pair of Marzzochi forks to go with them, Although the forks are not off the fantic and the wheel spindle needs a little work.

The std Yamaha brakes can be improved tremendously by simple modifications to the operating cam, and sending a old pair of shoes and brake back plate to Safetek, who will reline and machine shoes to exact diameter of hub.

It always amuses me when someone posts something like this which is of no assistance to anyone - why not just say what the simple modification is as that would be far more helpful.

How can they machine shoes to the exact diameter of the hub without the hub?

I reckon there is nothing wrong with the standard cam or actuating lever on the front of Yamaha twinshocks.

I recently did the machining thing on the drum surface and on some new oversize brake linings combined with a new low-friction cable on my Majesty and the front brake is brilliant.

The profile of the brake operating cam is the same as that used on road bikes, and doesnt work that well for trials applications. Changing the cam profile is something that was done to bikes being used by supported riders back in the day, as was fitting oversize linings and machining to exact diameter of brake drum. Hard to explain the changes needed to brake cams, but may be possible to get std one modified by one of the Yam specialist parts suppliers, brake shoe mods are very easy, and Safetek can help with info regarding this. Guy I know in the US helped build a Majesty with special Harris chassis, and this can easily do stoppies with mods outlined above, carried out on std Yam front hub.

I can't imagine why anyone riding a twinshock would want to do "stoppies" or "nose wheelies" as they have no place in "No Stop" trials rules. I agree with David that Yam twinshock front brakes are fine for their intended purpose, as long as you keep the actuator clean and smooth in use. As an aside some of the new OEM front cables do have a slightly tighter radius on the mounting tube where it bolts onto the front fork and it may help to straighten this a little to give a smoother pull on the cable. Also the new levers with needle roller bearings will give a lot more sensitivity for 2 finger braking.

I guess in AHRMA events with sections set out a little on the easy side, there is certainly no need for trick riding, but here in the UK where top level twinshock events have around 75% of riders on modern bikes, the section marking often means trick riding is essential for anyone in with a chance of taking the win.

I would be very surprised if anyone could win a "traditional" series event either riding a genuine P65 bike, or a twinshock without using a few modern trick riding techniques.

You are wrong,it is still being done I rode,(badly) in the Golden Valley trial last weekend - watching Steve Allen on his Enfield was a pleasure,finding grip where modern bikes were failing.According to TMX he did rather well in the Harry Perry on his rigid Matchbox the day before.Best not say any more or he wont be able to get his helmet on again.

Its the rider NOT the bike,trouble is most of us only have the ability to talk about it.

How many have I won..?? irrelevant. I wouldn't win overall if I was riding Bou's 4RT because there are better riders in the series than me, but since you ask, I have placed 1st in class B (2nd overall) in one event and had other 2nd and 3rd places on an Ossa MAR now and again without any trick riding obviously.

However, if you were at any of these events you would have seen Nick Shield win some outright - yes, beating the modern bikes too, on a 340 Bultaco or a Majesty and he does NOT trick ride. Your ramblings, yet again, are not based on any fact whatsoever.
