madcr500
The last time i went out on it about a week ago it ran fine then tonight, it wasnt running well. The tickover was higher than usual but it wasnt smooth like normal, it sounded like it was four-stroking if you know what i mean. It sounds far too rich. When going down a steep descent the revs dropped and i had to rev it to keep it running. When i press on the choke the revs drop to nothing but when revved it feels crisper. On the roads on the way back when going downhill i pulled the clutch in and the engine drops to a high tickover, when i revved it a little (with the clutch in as i was going along) the engine surged to a very high tickover. I have 2 ideas as to why, see what you think. 1. Choke is sticking on a bit which has happened once before on this bike. or 2. Yesterday i fitted a new air filter. The old one was in the bike when i got it and was knackered but i kept it lightly oiled. When i fitted the new one i gave it a damn good soaking in filter oil and overdid it a bit. I squeezed it out and put it in. Could too much oil be restricting airflow and causing a rich mixture. Thanks in advance for any help. copemech
I would give the carby a good cleaning, doubt too much oil is the thing! Condensation in the bowl will do funny stuff!

Marcus Marcus, When oiling the filter, take some paper towels and "blot" the filter to soak up excess oil before re-installing it. Oil will collect at the bottom of the filter (it is an "open celled" foam, kinda like a bunch of little caves connected together), which incidently is where the intake holes for the imulsion tube and low-speed circuits are. Start with whatever you did different last, before the symptoms occured. And, Copey's right, you want to clean and adjust the carb to eliminate that as a possibility. ___Marcus, I can't quite remember, does your bike have the Rotax engine? max1956bikes
sounds like crank seal problem to me.
madcr500
Sorted the problem out. It was the choke sticking slightly. I stripped the carb down and everything else was fine. A small amount of water in the bottom of the float bowl but not enough to cause a problem. Running like a dream again now. Thanks for the help. Marcus. BTW Yes it is a rotax engine. You cannot overlook water in there, ANY water! It will drive things goofy!
