Goodness pat why did'nt your team pull you off the bike when they saw your first sign of discomfort with your back.

Anyway good luck with the mend chap.

Get real.

This is a world championship, and just like that rider in the TDF with a scaphoid break these guys need to carry on as far as is possible. It means that much to them and if it heals then they haven't lost too many points.

So what you saying,if the like's of Bou was showing sign's of a hurting back that was'nt healing, montesa would'nt send him off to get an xray done to see what was going on straight away,it's possible the doc would say to him ok this is what's wrong, you need to rest for 4 week's for whatever to heal, thats ok say's Bou the next round is'nt for 4 weeks anyway, whats the team lost "Nothing"...you ignore the problem you could lose 2 round's,it's all to late by then to salvage anything.I know that's an unreal way of looking at thing's but it make's sense,i think??

Getting an Athlete to stop competing is probably the hardest part of any PT's job. In general, amateur golfers are even worse than any extreme athlete I've ever worked on. Its always hard to know when to stop, but, its for the best and I'm sure his PT will have him back to his up and running asap.

All I can add is , PAT TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK FIRST ! I've been a mech. for the last 30+ years and thankfully have never injured my back .

But I know a few that have and not mended correctly (in a hurry !) and it has slowly changed their lives for the worse ......................

LISTEN to your therapist , Exercise and come back when you are happy ... At your level of riding you need nothing to break your concentration !

The USA needs a world champ soon and your our best bet ! TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY FIRST ! Then go kick the worlds behind for us ...

Rest well ,

Glenn

Pat said...> "Doctors and I finally found out what has been going on with my back. I have something called Spondylolysis, which is basically like a cracked bone in the lower back. I first noticed something was wrong while practicing in Oklahoma the day after the Sooner Cup, but I thought it would get better so I just tried to ignore it...."

"Well after feeling it everyday for over 2 months, I got it checked out and now I have to go to physical therapy for the next 4-6 weeks. Which means I will not be able to ride the next few World Rounds. I'm really sorry to let everyone down, but after hurting very bad in Japan and not even being able to walk without a lot of pain a few days after, I cant keep riding like this. I'm not riding like I know that I can, and it has been really frustrating."

Read Pat's whole blog post here.

lucky ya'll found the break early on, I had the same thing happen to me, some permanant dammage was done, (mostly muscular) since it was not corectly diognosed in the beginning

Do we have a "hang loose" icon as per your brother? Maybe not, well, just relax and be a good boy! Enjoy the ride! It is OK!

Maybe we can invite you down to Tish over the winter months, things can be arranged! :(

Hey Pat, It sounds as though you have a great support structure with your family-friends and sponsors. You pushed the injury as far as you could...then your support (and their common sense) took over. Which is how it usually works. As an athelete you just go...and go.... and go.... until someone (or something) stops you. Which is where you are now. Everyone is right - you have a lifetime of competition ahead, as long as you stay healthy enough to do it. Good luck! You have given all of us something to be very proud of, and lot's to look forward to. You do know that (seceretly) we all try to live vicariously thru our heros??? Good luck! KA
