sammccall45
Hi there, just registered with this website after reading some of the advice etc on Honda's TLR Models. I've had my big bore 200 since school and only recently pulled it out of the shed after arriving back from Australia and NZ some 9 years later. the bike has done very little work since an engine rebuild back in 1997 and has been basically gathering dust since around 2000. I've recently stripped the bike and am weighing up the various options (powder coating, enamel finish etc). The dilema i am currently facing is that a neighbour who has been after the bike for years recently revealed some knowledge of the bike that i had no idea about... I bought the bike as a bored out 200 (up to 250 now), and had it down as a 1986 model (white frame etc-trials registered as A814TTL). He has told me that the bike may be some kind of special or worked over version which may have been modified by Sammy Miller. I have no idea if any of these bikes were produced or whether he is just talking ****!!! Anyway, when the bike was rebuilt the mechanic who carried out the rebuild replacing the piston, rings sleeve etc (i'm not a mechanic), did mention that it had hot cams and wasn't a standard set up in there. If anyone could cast some light on this or tell me who might be able to i would much appreciate that. I can provide frame & engine no.s if anyone can tell me a bit more about the bike i thought i once knew!!! I'm sure my neighbour is talking rubbish but i'd like to know, given i no longer have the log book for the bike. Understandably i would like to have the best job done on the frame and swingarm when i put the thing back together with all the shiny new ****e i've been stock piling to go on the bike. If anyone has any advice on types of paint and options for respraying or powder-coating i would be really grateful. I am also planning the once piece GRP tank and seat unit combo for the bike and will no-doubt be hankering after a new rear mudguard to complete the build-current one is sratched-(previous owner's lack of skill i'm sure!!!). If anyone could tell me where i might find a replacement rear guard that would be cool too. I am looking for feedback on the following parts. Pivot Pegz on a trials bike? Domino or Amal Twist grip? Replacement gear shifter and sprocket guard(don't really want a genuine honda replacement-wondered if anything more exotic was available). Whats the best length shockers to go for? (I'm over six foot and 89KG) The Falcon options are 15.15,15.4 or 15.65 inches... I recon the last option. Do Ohlins do shocks to fit? I've seen a couple of TLRs with Disc brakes at the front and was wondering what bike they take them off? A montesa Honda or something? Showa i'd presume... Anyway, i'd love to hear from you guys with any advice. P.S. I'll be taking delivery of a 1985 TLR250 and TLM50 and was wondering what a fair price would be for the TLR250 (the TLM is free) as its in pretty average condition... Pounds please-i don't understand euros... Cheers Sam
bordermike
Sam, good luck on the restoration of the TLR. I had Pivot Pegs fitted to my Scorpa 250 for probably
