Limp Wrist

Hearty Absquatulations Fellow Triallers

Just wondering if anyone out there in trials land has suffered (and more importantly) recovered from a broken scaphoid (thats the wrist bone to us laypersons). I have just broken mine in a freak mountainbiking accident, and will have to get it pinned back together. The doc says at least 12 weeks before any form of riding, about two weeks after the big competition I have been training for. (At least I'll save on fuel)

Does anyone have any experience with this operation, will I be able to ride properly again, have full use of my wrist etc. Also are there any exercises that can help my recovery (keep it clean!). Regaining confidence will be a big challenge.

Thankx

Alexei

Scaphoid exercise chart

Hi Alexei, Have done mine a few times and did it again last sunday with a few trips over the bars. I tend to do a lot of neuro-muscular work around the area to maintain movement patterns and stimulate blood flow. The bone tends to heal slowly due to a lack of blood supply im my opinion so anything you can do to increase it usually makes a big difference in my clients healing times.

I'd guess that theirs a lot of trials riders riding round with a similar issue but just putting it down to a sprain.

Good luck

Hi Billy

Thanks for the info & link. I go in for surgery tomorrow, so I wanna get straight into the rehab exercises. How many times have you done yours? Sounds like you are a bit of a pro at it. Do you find that you suffer any wrist pain when you're hanging off the bars for a long time? Is there any sort of brace/protection that you wear to help protect your wrist.

cheers

Alexei

Its the second time i've done it really, but they have lingered on a while due to me failing to stop and rest it fully. It doesn't really give me any huge problems and i don't really suffer to greatly with it, i managed to ride my bike last night for a demo i had pre-booked. Ideally i'd of liked to rest it but, like a true trials rider giving the pay cheque back would of hurt a lot more than my wrist did. Its my job dealing with rehab etc so i tend to work on myself anytime i get 5 minutes between clients and have never felt the need or use of any brace due to lack of flexibility etc.

I'll try and find you some more tips out and do a list if everything i do to speed up surgical recovery as well.

This is more a strengthening thing rather than a rehab' exercise.

This is from another sport,to make a strong wrist.. we do it before any other serious warm-ups.

Arms straight out to the sides, bend them at the elbows so your fore-arms point up but your upper arms stay horizontal(I surrender).

Palms forward, open out your fingers and thumbs as wide as you can then close them really tightly into a small fist.

It looks like a strange double handed wave.

That's one rep', do 100 of them as fast as possible ( you should lose control at about 50 :hl: )

If you're like me you'll find ,as with most exercises, the hardest part is remembering to do them!
