tt5th
The problem is getting a replacement sole that's suitable. Most repairers are geared up for either traditional shoe soles or walking boot soles. Trials is somewhat a niche market. I would guess Hebo direct would be the only place to get one. If you can point me in the direction of a pic that shows the type of sole and how its attached I might be able to tell you more. I work for a company that does a lot of resoling of walking and military boots so if I can help I will. Edited July 7, 2008 by tt5th
jimg
I just bought a pair of replacement soles for my Garne boots. I took my boots into a Red Wing store where the owner has been in business for over 30 years. He said that he couldn't put the new soles on for me because he cannot find an adhesive strong enough. He said some adhesives may work for a little while, but won't last. He is known for doing top quality repair work for years, so I tend to believe him. This is as far as I've investigated so any advice? What adhesive or process is used to bond new soles?
tt5th
We use a commercial bostik adhesive (can't remember the code of the top of my head). The soles are roughed (on a wire brush wheel) and halog'd (again I have to check if halog is brand name or just what I know it as, it removes any residues from the rubber) and left for an hour. Then the adehesive is added to the boot and the sole and allowed to 'go off', takes about an hour again. The sole and the boot are then heated briefly in a flash heater to activate the glue before being put together in a pneumatic press. This process sticks soles through anything you can throw at them. Our boots are used around the world by bikers, military and ramblers. I often get boots come in to us where people have tried to use off the shelf glues to stick them back together and have come to the conclusion these simply don't work for any length of time. I'm not familiar with Redwing but maybe their footwear is not designed for quite such tough activities? You need to find yourself a military/walking/bike boot manufacturer ideally, they should have the kit and glue to put your sole on properly.
