Welding Exhaust And Frame

Need a couple of bits of welding doing to my 08 300...

The Exhaust mount has snapped on the exhaust where it bolts onto the top bolt of the rear brake master cylinder, what material is that part of the exhaust made out of so that I know where to take it to be welded?

I also have had part of the frame snap off, Its the front right bracket that the airbox bolts onto, its snapped at the closest point to the frame, what material is the frame made from and what do I need to look out for when getting it welded? Im worried about electrics etc getting fried...

All the best

Tom

Check it with a magnet.

If it's silver and magnetic it's a type of steel, if it's silver and not magnetic it's probably an aluminium alloy

If it's gold painted, it may be a magnesium alloy

I'm well aware of exceptions to the above but for the bits you are talking about the magnet test should do - there's rarely much Duplex stainless or Monel in a trials bike.

When you come to re-welding brackets to the frame, be aware that it's pretty thin and is Chrome moly, keep the haz as small as you can.

its very worrying that a bike that new needs welds to the frame and exhaust, if you didnt drop it from a massive step i would try it on warranty. even if it is passed its waranty time i would contact the importers, i done this and got a new frame from sherco, eventhough it was months past its warranty.

you wouldnt say no to a brand new shiny frame now would you

The problem is that I do drop it off big steps, in all fairness the bike gets alot of hammer, I wouldnt say its done badly. I recently had the master cylinder off to bleed the rear brake and may have over tightened it onto the exhaust because its only since then that it has broken.

for the sake of a few quid I may aswell just get it welded, the parts that have broken arent major and wont stop me riding the bike.

Ill keep it in mind though if anything more serious does happen.

Cheers =]

Tom,

I have a 05 txt pro and have the same two bits welded back on and at the same time had all four off the air box mounts welded on the inside(gas gas only weld one side).

I got a guy who is a very good welder to tig weld the parts. Hes done a top job with no worrys.

Like others have said on an 08 bike talk to Gas Gas UK first, but its your bike now and if you want to ride it may be quiker to get the work done youself.
