If the bike sits at a section for any length of time, unless it fires on the 2nd kick (it usually fires off first kick), it needs the choke. Not a big problem as, once I know the drill, I just flip the choke and it fires right off. I've had the condition with both the Ducati and Kokusan ign systems, but my guess it that it's somehow fuel related. Hasn't been enough of a problem to spend time figuring it out, though. For good extra-cold starting I drilled out the starter jet to .8mm (.031") and an NGK BPR5EIX at .024". No matter how cold it gets, it's a 2nd-kick starter every time. When it is hot and I stop for a minute or 2 it starts first kick, leave in any longer it needs several kicks and the choke on. Not the end of the world but on a cold day when there is lots of queing it feels like I'm trying to start the bike more than actually riding it. Started with looking at the obvious stuff, plug, plug connector and have ended up changing the stator and voltage regulator. Spoke to Kev at gasgas and he suggested changing the float height as this might be due to when the engine is hot the fuel in the bowl evaporates! Other than the starting it runs really well. Sounds strange - I know how good Kev is, so hardly feel worthy of questioning it, but why wouldn't evaporated fuel be replaced, when the floats go down and more fuel is allowed in? A mate of mine has an 05 GasGas which I love - he's had it for years on top of the bikes which him and his son have every year - at the moment I think 07 and an 08. It tends to get loaned out to various people for various trials, all of them having some trouble starting it, and I always jump on it and goes first time. I know yours may well be different problems - I always start with no throttle and a very big leg. Just thought I'd mention it in case just knowing that can make you give it an extra welly first time and maybe avoid some of your problems. I'm 'bigger than the average bear' so it helps. The 05 was the last Gasser I could ride due to the lightened forks on the 06 which I just can't get to grips with (yet) - seems to flick under me too often. copemech Posted October 14, 2008 Report Share Posted October 14, 2008 Some of this may have to do with the fuel used, as race gas can easily vaporize when shut off hot, may boil in the bowl! I have run into this running the avgas in higher temps as well. The fuel evaporates too easily it seems. Not sure about the UK, but it is possible to have problems from winter/summer blend pumpgas even, as the MVP(vapor pressure) is different as I understand. peterb Posted October 15, 2008 Report Share Posted October 15, 2008 The 300 does tend to need a certain hefty kick to spin it over. I've noticed problems with difficult hot starting with these bikes fitted with Ducati ign, fixed this by adjusting the ign pick up sensor to have an air gap (between it and the flywheel) of around 8 thou or less, usually set to anywhere over 30 thou.
