feetupfun
One way to be certain is to measure the diameter of the bore. If it is 66-68mm, it is a 175. If you are tricky enough you might be able to make this measurement through the exhaust port with the pipe off. If it has the original barrell, you should be able to tell what capacity it is from the engine number prefix. I can't remember what a TY125 prefix is but the most common TY175 prefix is 525 and the road-going TY175s here are prefix 1N4.
tsr22b
Hi Martin, look at the barrel on the clutch cable side. The cylinder capacity is cast in the aluminium between the bottom two fins close to the reed block flange.
tony283
The easy to see differences between the TY175 and TY125 are as follows. All TY 175's have frame numbers starting with 525, stamped on the right side of the headstock. The TY 125 starts with 539. The TY125 usually has a steering lock on the left side of the headstock. The frames are slightly different and on the TY175 the sidestand attaches to the right side of the swinging arm. The TY125 has the sidestand on a bracket below the left footpeg. On the TY 125 engine the number is often JUST 539 with no other numbers. The carbs are different but just about everything else is interchangeable. tsr22b
In response to Tony's comment, yes i agree,-assuming someone hasn't put a 175 barrel and piston on a 125 , what you said should identify the bike. Incidentally one of my 175 engine numbers is 525 and nothing else. This bike spent most of its life in Japan and was recently imported. There is also a Ty175 model that has a frame like the Ty125 and has prefix 1N4. Not sure where else they were sold but they were popular here in Australia as they came fully set up for road registration while the 525 models only had basic lights and a (relatively) noisy exhaust. I guess the LH sidestand was for road registration requirements in some countries. david
martin 305
Hi there have just got the bike and it reads 525-103551 on the clutch side so would i be right in thinking its a 175 ? .It looks not to bad the frame has been powder coated , miller scilencer, good brakes , good wheels, the only thing that needs doing right away is to fit a new kickstart shaft and return spring. Is this a easy job? Any one know where to get the bits from ? also any advice on how to do the job would be great Thanks for any help . ducman
Well the 175 was not imported in every country.Like here in germany the 175 was sold as this :you get a complete 125 with the papers and a Kit wit the 175 barrel, piston, jets sproket etc.and the dealer puts everything togeter.I remember back in March 1980 i bought a brand new one from Yamaha germany and it came with all these specs. The price at that time was 3000 german marks. At that time around 1000 pounds.I just bought one this summer for 200 Euros. It was a 1976 modell. It runs very nice, and brings a lot of memorys back.
