Hi all !

A bit of advice would be appreciated on this my first post !

I have a year 2000 270cc Rev3 with a death rattle that its had since i bought it 18 months ago (yes i know your thinking there's one born every minute)but it has done two noisy trials and seen out plenty of playtime and starts easily and has not got any worse.I would however like to rectify this knocking which im not too sure if its the main bearing or piston slap. Not being completely handless i would like to know if this job is beyond the capability of the home mechanic with a sturdy bench and the usual assortment of tools.I dont have a manual and i'am wondering, does the big end have plain bearings or is it a con rod set where you have to split the crank and press it all together with accuracy and need a jig to do it and a test indicator and best left to the proffessionals.

Hi Neil !

Operation of the clutch makes no difference to the knocking.I have recently stripped down the clutch and renewed all the clutch plates due to wear. The noise was there prior to me undertaking this task.

Cheers

Bill.

have a look at bike specific forums main bearings gone (it seems to be a "poular" problem at the moment) Swishing is the sound of mains ... are you using Automatic transmision fluid in g,box? have you put a screwdriver to your ear (better a stethascope) and had a listen to various points around engine pay attention to near exhaust port. try to determin if it is same noise you hearing unamplified. Generally a straightforward job to split engine down worst bit is price of gasket set and getting it back into frame you would need flywheel puller c
