Sound Measurements Of Trials

i'm about to buy my first trials bike shortly (i've been riding off-road for most of the past 30yrs). the most important thing to me is the noise from the exhaust. i need to be able to ride near my house without disturbing the neighbors.

the bike will most likely be a gas gas 280.

i have spoken to about 5 dealers, and even the us gas gas importer, and none can tell me anything more than "it's comparable to a lawnmower" or "it's quiet."

does anyone have the actual decibel reading of a newer 2 stroke revving at something higher than idle?

thanks in advance for your help. for what it's worth, i could never dream of riding my KTM250exc around here - so i'm hoping it's much quieter.

Our club had to jump through hoops to get a practice area through local planning, and one of the sticking points was the noise of the bikes.

Not the amount of noise rather the lack of. In fact the test was so suspiciously low it needed to be repeated as the planning consultant was sceptical we hadn't paid the guy to lower the readings!

What the actual Dba was I can't recall exactly but I know it was no more than background noise at 100 metres.

Checked 3 bikes at yesterday's St David's trial....dBA at 1 metre was less than 86 on all three. All were 2 strokes, 2 GG + 1 Sherco.

Sound power levels reduce by around 5dBA every doubling of distance so at a few hundred metres you shouldn't disturb anyone-unless your riding a TRW Montesa like the young chap at yesterday's event, the bike had obviously been 'tweaked' with some or all of the noise mitigating devices removed...naughty boy!

Cheers, Mark.
