ronnie35
Hi all, ok after a 3 year break i have come back to the world of off road motorcycles (previously i raced motocross and did quite a bit of trail riding). Last Sunday, i bought an 02 Montesa 315r. Since then Ive ridden it quite a bit after work (i live on a farm see!) Starting off with the basics, figure of 8s at full lock, practising balance, and controled clutch use. I have also done a bit in a little quary and and a forset which also had a river, slowly gaining confidence on each outing. Anyway my quiestion is...I picked up TMX today, and scouting the whats on section i have found 2 events that are on this Sunday. 1 has a class for novices and the other event hasnt, now do I go and spectate on the event which has no novice class, atempt to gleam as much information regarding techniques and rules (im still unsure re the points structure). Or do I enter the novice event and go in at the deep end? Im very keen to do the latter, but i understand that perhaps i could learn more maybe by goin as a spectator first? You opinions would be greatfully recieved! regards Reian
tt5th
Deep end!! Just use it as a practice, remember you don't have to attempt all sections if you're not confident. Just have a ride round and try the ones you like the look of. In a section; No feet down - 0 marks (clean) 1 foot down (known as a dab) - 1 mark 2 dabs - 2 marks 3 dabs (or as many as you like to get you out of the end of the section) - 3 marks Stop, come off your bike, don't wait for the observer to wave you in, miss a gate, don't make it out of the end of the section - 5 marks. To start with the key thing is just to get the bike out of the end of the section! Even if that involves 'walking' out with it! (when I say walking I mean still on the bike just using your feet to help you along) That way you only get a 3 instead of abandoning your run and getting a 5. Least marks wins! Good luck! laser1
Go do the trial. Focus on having fun. Walk the sections to find the best line. Get wide early in the corners, weight the outside peg. Watch what others are doing. Drink lots of water. Have fun again.
pistonbroke
if it's any help, i've never been to any trial where if you have any problems , just ask the guy stood next to you at the section . I would be very surprised if he wouldn't give you any help when asked . I remember my first trial after a break of about thirty years , great fun , should have done it years ago , just take your time and ask if not sure and i'll bet you'll be back for more next week ! phil

ronnie35
Thanks for all the posotive replies guys. After calling up to see whether there were any entries left i learnt i couldnt do any of the events, as one was a youth only and the other a team event. Safe to say i was a little dissapointed as it would have liked to have done my first event a week after buying the bike. Anyway, speaking to one of the organisers on the phone he told me of an event that is being run this weekend coming that isnt far and has an adult novice class. So fingers crossed i shall be doing this one. Thanks again for the info, and replies Reian
pete_scorpa3
Would it be too far to travel to our event this Sunday in the Midlands? There are two routes and thirteen sections around a four mile lap. Providing it stays dry, the B route would be ok for you and it's a good ride around between the sections.
